Body build wise and he’s taller,  Ashley Cole is infinitely stronger and quicker than him.

This obsession with Maatsen at LB is baffling.

I like the kids but he’s not suited to this league at a top level team.

And for the Lamptey  comparison, again Lamptey from what I have seen is stronger and quicker than him.

Physicality is key and he hasn’t got it.

Not to mention that Lamptey still couldn't get in the Brighton team when he was fit and available ...

De Zerbi did his best to try and fit him in somewhere (played him "out of position" at RW and LB) but only twice in 9 appearances this season in his proper RB slot.  Sounds familiar 🙂

Maatsen isn't ash cole but he wasn't given a single chance and has immediately done well in his first game in the bundesliga against a lowly opponent.

So nothing is proven but many of us will be forever convinced that Poch could have given him a game or two when Colwill was clearly a beginner at left back.

I have watched several times a presentation on how to give presentations and the presenter made the point that knowledge is more important than ability using the example of him an old guy who knew how to ski being better than an olympic figure skating medallist he was on the slopes with who was just learning to ski. She would eventually be far better but at that point he was much better. He knew what he was doing, she had athleticism but no knowledge.

I just don't understand Maatsen debate. Manager trying to hide player weaknesses and utilize their strength yet fans are complaining

Some people think

Maatsen - Martinez - Lindelof - Lamptey

Is normal

And

Ake - Dias - Ankanji - Stones

Is hipster

We don't have Martinez, Lindelof or Lamptey in our team so not really sure the relevance? Where is anyone saying play a full hobbit backline?

At the same time where is anyone saying City's backline is hipster? Rico Lewis is only an inch taller than Maatsen and Pep has no problem using him.

Strange post.

The problem here is you think the only way to hide Maatsen's weakness is to play him in a completely different position. You can still hide his weakness and utilize his strengths by playing him in his regular position.

Once again no one has said this, if you want to keep doing this false equivalency sh*t then don`t be surprised when everyone is sick of your bullsh*t.

Fixation on Maatsens build is borderline annoying, short players/defenders can make it in European football, they've just got to adapt their style to account for it. I'd argue if the lad did it for Burnley in the championship but couldn't in the prem, his height and strength isn't the problem.

It's not even to say he's never going to make it either, he just simply isnt at the level needed right now in a postition where the club clearly feel we are currently covered and he isn't happy to wait.

He’s just not built for it, yes you have small defenders but they are the exception rather than the rule and he would have to be exceptional to be successful with his size at LB in the most physical league in the world.

If Colwill is getting bullied how on earth do some fans think Maatsen would cope better 😂

The match he started recently he got out muscled every time he had to duel for the ball.

What an awful back line this would have been. Not a decent defender among them. Average height less than 5ft 8in.

All exceptional defenders, this is like comparing Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Artyon Senna and Sebastian Vettel to 4 average drivers🤣🤣

The reaaaaaaach here is laughable.

Listen I know we need some positive news but this a rather strange him to choose to fight on.

Were all those defenders exceptional at 21 in their first season in a top league?

R. Carlos was still in Brazil.

Baresi was in Serie B.

Cannavaro was in his first season starting for Napoli.

Lahm was still playing for Bayern Munich II.

Maatsen has shown nothing to say he can reach those heights not even half those heights

I think he has a very promising career ahead of him as a budget Patrick van Aanholt.

Probably how it will turn out remains me of Josh Mceachran.

If it was Tino Livramento this fuss was about I could understand

It would only be like that if those 4 drivers shared a physical characteristic that people said would mean they wouldn't make it to the top in F1. Since nobody ever said then your analogy doesn't make any sense.

Did you watch a lot of 1980's Serie B games and work out Baresi was going to reach those heights back then?

Or even much of Bayern Munich II in the early 00's? I imagine Maatsen's Championship performances were more impressive than Lahm's appearances against some German kids.

Don't speak sense, you'll confuse him.

This hilarious 🤣 what has this specific player has that everyone else can see but I can’t.

Top clubs aren’t lining up to buy him, he struggles in the matches he has played so far so what is it?

You have the internet, you can watch his Burnley games and how he played in a progressive system.

Barca wanted him in October and he's just gone Dortmund, are they not top clubs now?

I think some people were saying he's too small / lightweight to play left back. I doubt very much he'll become the next Roberto Carlos but my point was you don't exactly have to be a colossus to play as a full back - but many are writing him off without ever giving him a chance. He's gone from left back at Burnley to left back at Dortmund via playing a few minutes here or there on our right wing. The fact we didn't even give him a chance in his natural position is baffling, especially given our injury crisis in that area.

We could have a young player that plays like Bakayoko while drunk and they'd still be the conspiracy he'll KDB us when we sell him.
