I'd be amazed if that second bit happened.

More likely he ends up like Lamptey has at Brighton, where the qualities he does have still don't get him a regular game.

Not many players we sell end up being great somewhere else. Certainly none I can think of since De Bruyne and Salah were sold anyway ...

Everytime we sell an U25 this same narrative gets peddled.

Yes - maybe, maybe not. But it will be interesting to see how Maatsen gets on after a couple of seasons playing left back in the Bundesliga.

Tomori will doubtless get a big money move after impressing in Serie A. We're also linked with buying back Guehi. Obviously we already spent big on bringing Lukaku back, and then there's Nathan Ake - impressed at Bournemouth and got a big move to City. Livramento is now at Newcastle and looking good after we sold him for peanuts. It's not only the De Bruyne and Salah transfers.

I'd put Tomori, Guehi and Ake in the "good" category rather than "great". Personally, I wouldn't re-sign any of them. Livramento certainly has potential, but nothing we could have done to keep him anyway as he was dead set on leaving. Not sure we need to discuss what we all think of Lukaku LOL

Maatsen is pretty sure to leave. His age and minutes pretty much dictates that. I would probably try to sell him.

Absolutely, if Poch doesn't rate him and his contract is out in the summer we absolutely have to sell him.

Yes agreed, and I don't expect Maatsen to be a "great" player but can certainly see him improving and becoming a good top level player.

In the summer when we accepted the bid from Burnley, I couldn’t believe it and was abit mad.

But you have to say that Maatsen hasn’t taken his chance and shown us anything to suggest that he can become an elite player.

So if we can get £20-30m for him, that’s pretty good business.

Just because we were silly enough to bring Lukaku back doesn't mean selling him was a mistake.

Him effectively funding Diego Costa's transfer is easily top 5 for best business we've ever done.

Several sources talking up a move to Dortmund, and us wanting 26mill for him.

Could be Dortmund loan with obligation to buy in the summer IF one of our foreign loans is cancelled (aka Ziyech) as we are at the max limit for loans abroad as things stand.

We don't really know if he's good enough for us, cos our manager never gives him a chance at LB. He played LB mostly for Burnley didn't he and did well? But this manager on the rare occasion he gives him a chance, puts him at RW. It's like putting Ashley Cole at RW and expecting him to perform, then selling him when he doesn't. I don't understand what this manager is thinking most of the time.

So good enough for Dortmund but not us?

I think it is more about the suitability for certain leagues and teams. Plenty of players have thrived at Dortmund but struggled elsewhere. Jaden Sancho being a decent example. Maatsen has the potential to be a good player, as evidenced by his accolades while at Burnley last year. But opportunities look limited for him currently at Chelsea and his contract is expiring soon. We could extend his contract, but we need to generate some money for FFP compliance and he would seem to be one of more logical candidates.

Pretty sure he was a wing back at Burnley. If we were playing 5 in defense with wing backs I think he would have a better chance in that system. But that system would mean limited options for our wingers etc.

He spent vastly more time in attack than defence at Burnley.  And if you listen to Burnley fans, his defence wasn't up to much. It didn't matter because Burnley were a mile too strong across the paddock.

He was playing in the second tier for a team with 70-80% possesion most weeks and still standing out for being a bad defender.

We've made some questionable decisions under this regime but this isn't one of them.

Not sure the club will entertain anything that isn’t permanent.

I would have thought not either, just the reports about right now.

Dortmund loan is close, no obligation to buy apparently.

Is so surley he has to sign a 1 year extention to protect his value to us.

Haven’t we used up all our foreign loan allocations? We shouldn’t be entertaining a loan move from Dortmund, they haven’t spent the Bellingham money.

Agreed. Players like DD Fofana and Webster rumoured to being recalled.

I don't know what all the fuss is about Maatsen. He is technically great but lacks both the size and speed to be a top-tier wide player, and he isn't that mobile or creative either. I'm genuinely surprised to see him having made a career for himself as a top-flight player.

He's no different to someone like Grimaldo or Guerreiro so not sure why you are surprised.

I feel Maatsen is pretty clear to leave and not many are that sad about it either. He is a gifted player and will become good but we have 20 of that category in the squad already.

I would say Maatsen has had his chance more than most, even more than Madueke but Madueke has taken his chances in the tiny amount of minutes he's been given.

I don't know about Maatsen, not even sure what his best position is. I'm unsure what the situation is with him at LB, I don't think it's height because Cucu isn't exactly Andre the Giant is he and he was given plenty of games there. He must be an extreme defensive liability there, if not then Poch has really messed up the situation.

I guess we'll never know, I don't think he has a future here and if we can get a decent sum for him I can't see many people being bothered by it.
