Looked a bit out of his depth, not sure what his best position is.

He came on as sub for his first ever Prem match at the age of 21 - he is likely to take time to adjust. Best position is probably left back I would imagine, but he seems versatile.

Harsh maybe but he didn't offer anything, didn't hold up the ball, didn't create chances. Elliott looked a threat and is only 20.

To be fair Elliott has been at Liverpool for 4 years, played almost 50 games for them last season and was in his natural position, so far more settled. Also maybe Elliott is a better player than Maatsen, or perhaps they will develop at different rates. In any case I'm more than willing to cut Maatsen a little slack. I agree he was indecisive and ineffective but am sure he will improve.

The team performance had dropped about the time he came on and he certainly didn't lift it. Still just his first minutes and tough opposition so let's given him lots of slack. Still folk were critical of Carney for taking 20 minutes to get into the game, which he did, but the longer the game went the better he looked. Got to give these young players and this new team time to settle down. Even the rolling stones took a few weeks to get going.

Not signed a new deal yet, and I believe he has just 1 year left on the current one.

Think he either signs one shortly or is sold as we won't want to lose the 25mill, or whatever it is, in pure profit.

Maatsen, Gallagher, and Chalobah will likey coup £70-80m of pure profit.

Likely with all the new arrivals he sees a limited path to first team, and probably doesn't want another loan.

We gotta get used to it, it's how we operate now.

The shame is that for me Maatsen is about to have his break out year, and his value will go from being a 20m player to a 45-50m one. But with his contract situation we can't keep him unless he extended

What's interesting to me is that under our current system, Maatsen would actually have 4 or 5 years left on his contract. Meaning we would probably keep him for this year to maximise his value.

At least we can say the two very best and the highest potential are still here in James and Cowlill.

And no doubt we'll once against be told how we're a graveyard for young players despite adding atleast one academy player to the squad in 6 of the last 7 years 🤣

I think we'd regret selling Maatsen I really hope we keep him and, if needed, ship off Cucurella instead.

Think its clear Maatsen wasn't ever considered to be a LB option here.

I suspect the write off for Cucurella is too much to absorb, let alone someone taking on his wages.  Maatsan unfortunately may be surplus to requirements, especially with Hall coming through.

The other angle here is although Maatsan was great in preseason, he played left wing, AM, right wing, and even parts in midfield.  I thought he was a left back, but was being used a utility player.  As our players return to fitness, we have better options.

Possibly, but it'll be interesting to see how Crystal Palace play Hall, he's supposed to be a midfielder but his best games for us were at LB

Can't judge a guy on his first PL substitute performance against Elliott who had already played a fair few games already .

Be a shame if he goes, he looked good in pre season, and played in various positions.

It might not be down to football but finances that decide his future though.

In order for him to stay he needs to sign a new deal. The owners are well reported to have been pi$$Ed off that we lost Christensen and Rudiger for nothing and are said to be willing to sell any player who has a year left and won't sign a new deal.

He's Ashley Cole in waiting. Both Maatsen and Chukwuemeka are uncut diamonds. Sadly I think they will not come through here now and will go on to have massive careers elsewhere.

My concern is that we are being enthralled by youngsters in foreign leagues that have a much steeper drop off in quality of teams. I am sure clubs like Santos are top quality but some of the teams in the same division are National League standard.

I believe I Poch and what we're doing here, I really do. But I can see Maatsen and ultimately Chukwuemeka leaving due to lack of opportunity and they are on similar paths and show every bit as much quality and potential.

If this happens I genuinely believe we run the risk of letting Ashley Cole and Jude Bellingham leave because of the difficulty in moving Cucurella and the likes of Ziyech on.

Odd situation. Played LB all his career (as far as I know) but hasn't once started there even in friendlies (as I recall). Defence wasn't his strongest suit at Burnley. Poch has tried him everywhere else, especially the wing. Clearly doesn't see him as a LB and we have plenty of wing options. Seems to point to him being surplus to Poch's requirements.

Good points.

Also worth bearing in mind that by far his strongest pre-season performance was against the mighty Wrexham 🙂

Maybe another loan ? In PL this time ? Sure Burnley would bite ...

Burnley's  a good idea. Kompany would, presumably, slot him back in at FB. We can see how he shapes up to PL standard.
