Nicolas Jackson - striker

Featured Replies

Some folk just can't see good or progress because it doesn't fit with their narratives. Apply this to both Broja and Jackson and anyone who isn't "elite" currently playing for mid table has been side. nearly 20 years of being spoiled rotten by a dodgy benefactor has made everyone forget that players actually need to develop somewhere before theyre bought for megabucks by "elite" clubs.

As we're no long "elite" we now have to "develop" players more than we're used to. Sad but true. So get your kicks deriding players if that's your thing, I'd rather look at the positives and support them and enjoy them develop in their careers, much like Drogba had to do... his first 10 months with us was horrendous and JT had to have a word.

No idea where you're getting that from. You should watch Palmer's 2nd goal against Luton and the way Wacko used his strength to shrug off the defender.

Physical requirement playing as CF is very different to wide forward

I feel for him because he is trying and for his age, he is returning ok but it's just that we see what the team creates and what he misses but otherwise for your first gig in England in your maybe third full blown season as a professional, 7 goals as 2 assists halfway through the season ain't too shabby. If he just achieves same 2nd half of season, and ends on 15 goals I'm sure that would have met hopes of most when we signed him. How many 20 goal a season strikers have we had in 3 decades? Hasselbaink, Drogs, Costa.

Look at Villa in 2nd with Ollie, he's hailed by all and Sundry but he's got 9. What's the United strikers total this season? All of Rashford, Anthony, Garnacho, Hojlund have 7 and even if we threw in Mason Mount the numbers don't go past the 7 Jackson has.

He's been poor, but not terrible and he will only get better. Perspective!

To those arguing that his return of 7 goals is decent. He should have had 15+ already.  He has personally cost us a lot of points with his awful misses.

We cannot afford a player who consistently is a hindrance.

Jacksons problem is purely the fact that he is not ready to be the main striker yet, I'm convinced he is going to be an exceptional striker, but not for another 2 to 3 years. We're expecting too much from a young inexperienced player. The board should have bought a main striker, to allow him to develop to the level we need. My hope is that taken out of the limelight whilst away ay AFCON, he returns in a better frame of mind. For the first half yesterday he was doing the Drogba flouncing around whinging, going down too easily, not truly competing. Something must have been said to him, because for the latter part of the game, his attitude switched completely and he started to come alive. He seems to thrive with another body to work with. I know everyone says "oh but thats only preseason". But the interactions i saw in those games were very good, and boded well for the future. Unfortunately injuries and far too many team changes have scuppered what was building. Inevitably his confidence took a nose dive. Until the injury list shrinks dramatically, we''ll never get back to where we were even in pre season. at this moment in time we are a makeshift team, with little coherence.

In the same post I called out poor performance.

Tell me the big names he has replaced that were banging in goals that helped us to title victories?

Young inexperienced team has young inexperienced players which sometimes mean poor performances. Shocker.

Don't take too much of this comparison but 2004/05 Drogba at 26 wasn't that much more prolific plus he had brilliant team and masses of secondary scoring...anyway. Jackson will never be Drogs but he is only 22...

Not comparing him to anyone else. Comparisons will not help him or the team.

Inexperience would explain him not getting into correct positions etc - but this isn't that. Instead he is getting chances. Lots of them. This is not about being inexperienced, but simply that he is a poor player who can't finish chances.

He’s erratic, but he’s our erratic. And he puts effort in. That goes a long way in my book. Some people think he’s rubbish, ok, but he tries and never hides. That takes balls. He’s growing on me. I remember when Drogba arrived, I thought he was dreadful and they didn’t turn out too badly.

Would like to see Jackson playing centrally just behind a striker, the pass to Cole yesterday was quality.

You mean as a number 10? You can't be serious Mod. He doesn't have the touch, the passing range or the vision.

That pass to Palmer was really his only standout moment in the whole game. It's not something we see him doing regularly.

A lot of people  have this view on strikers were a striker that misses chances is the worst thing in the world.  It isn't

The fact Jackson is so involved in chances is really promising, he's got a couple goals and assists and should have had a few more but for a young player in his first half season in a new league he's came in and shown promise.  of course he needs to improve and probably shouldnt be our main striker at the moment but it isn't his fault we went into the season depending on him.  We've seen a lot of promising signs from Jackson in terms of his positioning and link up play and hopefully he develops into a real player for us.

The real problem is the donkeys who don't have the intelligence or quality to get chances and spend most the game man marking the opposition centre backs.  Our other striker is like that.

Some on here will call that hold up play though and then pan the actual dangerous player who scores or assists every other game whenever he misses a chance but a striker can't get chances or contribute anything is a much less useful player than one that is heavily involved but misses chances.

But I think we are better off putting him there than up top for now. We are obviously going to continue with him (albeit after the AFCON), so if he can at least feed a pass centrally, it's going to be better than expecting him to score in front of goal or sitting out on a wing. At the moment, Jackson is far off a target man!

You could argue that Broja was also on yesterday, but our postioning is terrible. Broja was out on the wing a few times!

Yeah I agree, don't see him being able to play as a 10. He made 1 very good pass, but that was vastly outnumbered by his terrible choices that lost possession. Even with a few minutes yo go we had a 3 on 3, all he had to do was slow up and wait for the other 2 to take position, instead he tried the impossible pass which was easily intercepted that then led to a Luton chance.
