Part of this is on the manager and system. We should not ask a gk to play out from the back, if they are not capable of passing under pressure. But this nonsense is here to stay, and therefore, we cant continue with the constant errors. It was the same with Mendy. Mendy as a keeper (i.e making saves, catching crosses) was fine. The issue was he couldnt do it with the ball at his feet. So we got rid. The same is true of Sanchez - who is a bit better with his feet than Mendy, but worse at crosses. Both were not good enough for the system we currently want to play We have a keeper who can't play out from the back, it's ridiculous to risk giving away goals, we should abandon the tactic until we have a keeper who is capable of it. . It's going to ruin a promising session if we persist with Sanchez and playing out from the back.
September 30, 20241 yr Penders, Petrovic, and Slonina will all be sold for profit one day. I don't think we are getting a new ready to go #1 anytime soon unless Enzo M. demands one.

Struggle to see much profit between them except for probably Petrovic.

He literally passed it to their player and left him with an open goal - just like he did against Arsenal last season. The very definition of an unforced error gifting the opposition a goal. I honestly see no reason to put up with that. He’s clearly not as good a with his feet as some people think. He makes saves most of the other 19 keepers in the EPL would save anyway but gives away more goals stupid than anyone else in the league. I’d rather he kicked it straight into touch than some of the risky passes he does. I’m not a fan as you can probably tell. We should definitely bin the tactic or even use it in moderation until we get a goalkeeper who can truly play with their feet. He’ll cost us points every few weeks and over the course of a season that could be the difference between finishing inside the top 4 and finishing out of the Champions League places. He seems a nice enough bloke but great keeper he is not. No top side can get away with having an iffy keeper and we HAVE to upgrade if we are going to be serious about challenging. Not only that, but it's demoralising for players like Palmer who play brilliantly, only for the keeper to hand out presents to our opponents. Poch was right to drop him and I hope Enzo does too before he costs us big time.
September 30, 20241 yr The second goal doesn't worry me as much as the first. Playing out from the back, there is bound to be the odd mistake. Enzo himself said he expects more to happen. That's not necessarily a Sanchez issue, just a result of the way we play. But the first was a rush of blood going for a ball he absolutely didn't need to. Totally left us exposed. Up until that point I don't think he had made too many errors this season and he has made some great saves (particularly the Bournemouth one). If it weren't for him, we would have lost the bournmouth match.

Well, I don't love it, but you know what I mean - the commitment to the style and the benefits it yields should offset the occasional hiccup. Wonder if the occasion got to him - terrible decision to come out for the first goal. Shake it off Sanchez, next game is right around the corner.

I think the stick he was getting from Brighton fans got to him early on. The second goal he easier to fix that the first one just concentration and awareness, the first is decision making and that’s a bit tougher.

We didn't beat Arsenal last season all because of the exact same thing and he hasn't learned from it. He's almost as bad as Mendy with ball at his feet.

October 1, 20241 yr I'm sorry, I'm not having that the 2nd goal is easy to fix. Like @Nibs said he keeps doing it so he's not learning at all. He's not a raw 18 year old with limited match day experience, he's a 26 year old man with loads of top level games behind him. He clearly isn't that great with his feet because he completely missed the target, the target being passing the ball to Caicedo, it went straight to the Brighton player. He made me nervous every single time he had the ball and I was only watching it on TV, what must it be like for matchday going fans or even his own defenders for that matter. The fact that we are even debating which one of his 2 big errors in one football match is worse should tell us all we need to know.
October 2, 20241 yr I've seen somewhere in FB the reaction of Palmer to that second goal, he wasn't very happy about it. sh*t like those two goals that can annoy your team mates, I just hope that it doesn't bring in any bad feelings to the team.

That's how little faith I have in Sanchez not to give a goal away.

Not really on board with all this betting AGAINST our own players (I know Jim started it LOL) How about turning it round to something more positive, and making it a £1 donation for every clean sheet that Sanchez keeps ?
October 2, 20241 yr For me Bobby Sanchez is the GK equivalent of Nicholas Jackson. For every positive he brings there is a major negative. If we want to challenge for titles seriously, he’s the kind of player you have to upgrade on.

I dont think its really betting against a chelsea player as both are chelsea players... or is my logic flawed? I see it Just as one plays for us and the other is out on loan. We get to see both in action. Not really any differen to folk wanting Jorginson to play ahead of Sanchez is it?

Being a keeper is though because you're the only one responsible to do this job and mistakes are usually very costly.

October 2, 20241 yr I really hate Enzo justifying and accepting blatant GK errors such as that seen on the second Brighton goal. Kids - as young as 6 are taught not to play suicide balls down the middle like Sanchez played. There is zero excuse for it. I get that playing out from the back is his philosophy... but that doesnt mean we should do it every f**king time. Sometimes, you just have to put your laces through it and clear the lines. My philosophy is only eating Picanha - but sometimes, I just have to have a pie and mash if the Brazilian meat shop is closed.

October 2, 20241 yr I get the concerns that people have about Sanchez and i don't overly rate him myself. That said as a shot stopper, physical presence, claimer of crosses and general organiser he probably remains the best keeper that we have. Maresca, like many managers nowadays, wants to play a style where the keeper forms an integral part of the pattern of play with the keepers ball-playing ability being as important as any other aspect. However, what isn't taken into account is that the general game of outfield players is often riddled with under hit, overhit and missplaced passes. Those poor touches and missplaced passes are often scooped up and dealt with by the ability of their teammates and the fact that the outfield players are directly within the pattern being surrounded by teammates. Having a goalkeeper as part of a pattern of play but still on the outside/or the fringes of that pattern still keeps them in the position where any mistake will often lead to a goal. Therefore if we are to persist with this style of football, then Maresca is right, strap yourselves in peeps cos there will be more of these slip ups. Its inevitable. Plus, with a young, inexperienced defensive unit that is somewhat error prone at times, the goalkeeper in this formation is seeing a lot more ball than an Ederson, or Allison So where are these goalkeepers that have aerial presence, shot stopping ability, communication skills and are skillful with their feet enough to dictate play. They are out there, of course they are, but they will all have skeletons in their closets as well.
