Posted April 19, 201213 yr Have to admit I was very skeptical about us signing this guy but he along with JT were as good as anything I've seen yesterday, especially 2nd half. If Messi has come up against 2 better centre backs than those two I'd be amazed. The shed were chanting his name and he is already fast becoming a favourite. I see in him almost a younger version of JT. Chelsea in the past have been castigated for being two foreign, the media never forgave us for being the first to field an all foreign XI, but in fact 3 of the 4 starting defenders at the Euro's could be Chelsea players. No matter what happens in the 2nd leg and how much we all love Luiz I think the Terry-Cahill partnership is an absolute must for next season. £7m - Proving to be a bargain so far, now if only we could act as shrewdly as this in the transfer market more often!
April 19, 201213 yr Can see Luiz playing more as DM,especiially as the Cahill/ Terry partnership establishes itself, but i never doubted his quality, he was already England quality before he joined the ranks :-)
April 19, 201213 yr I wanted Cahill about 3 years ago, he was classy at Villa and underrated at Bolton. Top signing!
April 20, 201213 yr if he plays well against barcelona in the second leg, thats his England CB position next to terry all but sown up. Hard to choose between him and luiz, both quality players with very very different style Cahill the terry type, English, hard fair, also with some great skill Luiz, Tonnes of skill and flair, but sometime can cost u, however is capable of producing some absolutely superb defending at times quite the conundrum
April 20, 201213 yr Totally agree with everything that's been said above except for Luiz playing more in DM, he's a defender! I expect to see a Luiz Cahill pairing far more next season, every year JT is missing more games through injury and that will continue next year. It's a nice three to have competing though.
April 20, 201213 yr I feel more confident when I see cahill line up alongside Terry than seeing Luiz . Cahill is someone who will play the exact way JT would want him to play. Against barca , these 2 stayed close to each other with a little forward and Cahill to chase down the player if ball goes past JT . This was an excellent idea and they did not mark one individual player each .
April 20, 201213 yr No doubt that when JT can't go on any longer that we have an awesome centre back partnership ready to go in Cahill and Luiz. No one will ever be able to replace the heart and commitment that JT gives along with his ability but Cahill is the closest we are going to get.

Agree with Barn here. Very happy about the way this signing is turning out. More please.
April 20, 201213 yr I think he was more of a replacement for JT than Luiz. JT is getting on a bit and all those games of playing through injury are catching up to him. How many more seasons has he got left in him?
April 20, 201213 yr Do we credit AVB then for bringing him in? To be fair the players ABV brought in have all worked out quite well..
April 20, 201213 yr Love him, was a fantastic signing and to nab him for £7m was outstanding business. I know we could have got him for free in the Summer but 1. we wouldn't have been guaranteed his signature and 2. we've bloody well needed him...! He speaks well to the press, he conducts himself in a good manner and he's a top class defender.
April 20, 201213 yr Count me in for the love in. Cahill is proof that the notion of "____ isnt chelsea class" is nonsense. He was a standout from a relegation threatened club and was having a bad season. Yet he comes here and 4 months later shuts the door on the best team/player in the world for 90 minutes. If that isnt raising your game I dont know what is. Pure class, and I hope our future captain. He plays at 100 percent at all times. Even in a team where we know Ivanovic and Cech are going to be around a while, I could see this. And in time I wouldnt be opposed to it.

April 20, 201213 yr Plays like Terry, looks like Terry from a distance hope he has as good a career at Chelsea as him. I do think Luiz has been superb defensively recently aswell.

I reckon Cahill's emergence has something to do with that - Luiz has hopefully realised that now he's got some actual competition he has to reign in his more 'interesting' moments - think the two will form a fantastic partnership in years to come.

The Luiz/Cahill partnership reminds me of the Carvalho/Terry one, and if its half as good as that one then we are onto a winner. One is a ball winner, best of a defender, though a lot more skillful than they are given credit for and able to crop up with goals at set pieces. The other is quick, sneaky, more of a pickpocket and able to bring a ball out from defence and supplement the attack.
April 22, 201213 yr Apparently the crowd were singing "John Terry, Gary Cahill" (I assume like the old Duff & Robben one) yesterday? Good to hear if true.
April 22, 201213 yr I honestly believe that by the end of next season at only £7Million, he will be right up there with Zola and Ivan as one of our best ever signings with everything taken into account Edited April 22, 201213 yr by Martin_plumb
April 22, 201213 yr Ivan was a quality signing, but one of the best ever?... How about £11m for a certain Mr Frank Lampard?
April 22, 201213 yr Ivan was a quality signing, but one of the best ever?... How about £11m for a certain Mr Frank Lampard? Yeah fair point Just when you compare players market values against value for money, £7mill for Cahill is a stunning deal.
