I thought AT was and is a complete tool whilst commentating, always something derogatory to say, his instant appraisal of said goal was he shinned it, implying it was flukey, looked a pure strike to me, but most things have a Torres tinted look in my book....B-)

He is woeful commentator.

When anything doesn't quite come off he turns into Captain Hindsight.

If a player shoots and it doesn't go in he says they should have passed.

If a player passes near goal and the move breaks down he says they should have taken a shot.

Forever saying, "he could of done this", "maybe if he had done this". Does my noodle in, never offers any kind of insight whatsoever.

I'm afraid there are quite a few Captain Hindsights on this site too!  I suppose it's a human failing to try to be wise after the event....

We're all guilty of it, difference is Townsend gets paid for it.

SMH (Am I doing it right?)

The goal voted the best ever in the first 20 years of the prem was a shinned goal. (That Rooney goal really should not have won it)

Andy Townsend, is that you?

sh*t, I've been rumbled!!!

There was no malice behind my comment, nor any intention to criticise. It was just an observation!

I can't see Eto'o being the main choice at 32 years old having played in a terrible Russian league for 2 years. Torres will be 1st choice, then Eto'o, then Ba. Though I wouldn't be surprised to see Eto'o get more of the "big" games than Torres, as he'll probably do a better job of holding up the ball than Torres and losing possession constantly against bigger teams will hurt us much more than smaller teams.

It's all good, it's just that just after Torres had scored such a fantastic goal (in regards to the build up as well as the finish) all Townsend could go on about was whether or not Torres caught it with his shin or not.

Considering how well worked the goal was and that regardless of whether it was off the shin or laces you would think the co-commentator might have had more to say about just how good the goal was.

agreed. f**king disaster though, i just put eto'o in my fantasy team. sh*te!

And why is Torres still our first choice striker?

I just can't figure this out at all. We have money, we have Champions League, we are a huge club. Surely we can get a top class striker here that can score regularly, not just every now and then when he feels like it.

Ridiculous that we have relied on this man for nearly three years now. Absolutely ridiculous.

And before you say about my avi and name, I am a Torres fan. I loved watching him at Atletico and of course I watched him play while he was at Liverpool. But even I can recognise that the guy has never been Chelsea. I honestly thought we would bring in a striker to replace him this summer.

Will you stop wittering on? Every post of yours is "Torres is sh*t, but I loved him when he didn't play for us." There's no point in dwelling on it now but we went after plenty of top class strikers to replace Torres only to not be able to get them either due to us not wanting to spend silly money (Cavani and Falcao) or a club just not wanting to sell (Rooney). The only other top class striker that was even an option was Lewandowski but he's going to Bayern next year so he wasn't available.

Transfer window is over now, deal with it, no, he doesn't deserve the number one striker position but there's nothing we can do about it now so can we stop going round in circles? If you go back a year to this day I guarantee you'll find almost the exact same posts.

In all fairness, it did look like he shinned it in the first replay angle, but about 5 minutes after the goal, they showed it from a different angle and Andy Townsend said something along those lines: ”He hasn't shinned that at all, it looks like he struck that absolutely perfectly”. And he did.

Nah we had a bunch of you going on about how well he would do now that Drogba's shadow had moved on, and we had signed Hazard and Oscar. The type of players who would give him the balls he always wanted at his feet. Than he went and missed 7-8 one on one chances; or just didn't seem very interested and everyone realized it had nothing to do with Drogba's shadow he was just never going to be good enough to be first choice at a club of our stature. Now we have Eto'o and Ba but we shall see if we are going to waste more time - Lukaku's said Torres was ahead of him in the peaking order so that worries me and Eto'o might turn out to be a bad move so we might be screwed in the striker department for yet another season.

I'm all for confidence in a young striker, but has Lukaku done anything for us that has shown he should be top of the pecking order in the striking department?

I would think that Lukaku had the opportunity to stay at the club and build himself into the starting 11, he has chosen not to do that and go out on loan, if he wanted to be top dog he should of stayed with us and faught for his spot.

What has Torres done to be ahead of Lukaku in the pecking order? In two and half years he hasn't even scored 20 League goals; he has made 134 appearances and had possibly 4-5 performances which I can say he lived up to his wages and price; if we had given any striker that amount of time they would have done roughly the same - Kezman; Di Santo; Carlton Cole; Sheva take your pick.

Lukaku has already seen that ability alone doesn't allow you to break into the first eleven, it didn't happen with Sturridge it would not happen with him - he is a young player and he will go on to bang in more goals at Everton than Torres and Ba combined. Than I'd expect for people to say that Everton is playing to his strengths, how much more difficult it is to score for Chelsea with Mata/Hazard/Oscar/Willian/KdB/Lampard/Schurrle behind him; how Ba and Torres scored goals with mid level teams but those goals didn't materialize at CFC.

Watching Torres start ahead of another promising young striker that offers much more for opposition defenders to think about is one of the most frustrating things. What exactly do you think Lukaku was thinking when Torres was starting ahead of him; and Eto'o was bought on - "oh yes it's really good for me to stay here and learn from the side lines". He already has the blueprint for his exit next summer if there is no serious promises about playing regularly he will move on - I can guarantee you that and within a few years he will actually be worth the transfer sum and wages we have been paying to Torres.

I don't think in Jose's eyes Torres is a gauranteed starter or ahead of anybody in the pecking order.

With Jose Talent will be the key factor to starting games.

Lukaku was never going to start games for us immediatly, scoring goals for WBA is different than it would be for us, teams don't go to the Hawthorns and park the bus.

Lukaku could have stayed with us and had his 20/30 minute cameos building himself into the team, whether he was told to go or not is obviously an unknown for us, but I was happy with the way he was being brought into the team. If he feels he should be starting games then I would say his confidence is misguided.

One thing that I'm unsure of and maybe someone else would know, does Lukaku's agent earn anything from his loan? In which case it might be right to question the advice he is getting.
