Oh fa you corrupt bunch of c**ts! Ferdinand elbows torres from behind and gets f**k all done about it but an accidental scratch on someone is a 3 match ban!

¿Qué

Torres will get a four game ban and I'm afraid nobody can argue. The letter of the law is quite clear, it was a red card offence. Automatic three game ban. He lost control under provocation but it's up to him to keep his composure and I'm afraid he can blame nobody but himself.

He was carded for the trip, which was a bit harsh IMO, and the second yellow was harsh, obviously, but Torres needs to be a bit cuter. He's always getting in referee's bad books because of his petulance and his general demeanour. Quite frankly, he needs to become street smart. He clapped the officials in the first-half, sarcastically, when he wanted a foul, and this is typical behaviour. He just doesn't command respect from officials. He comes across as weak when he's trying to look tough. He's an easy target as a result.

It's a shame because he was playing well and we were going to win, but having got away with the incident with Vertonghen, he was ill-advised to continue his running battle with the defender. That was just stupid. It was always going to end in tears. He's an experienced player and he should know better.

We can blame Vertonghen all we like but Torres should have used his brain. Far better to stay on the pitch and grab the points. That's how you really hurt Vertonghen. Get a goal.

He had been testing Dean's patience so he needed to be more careful, and he wasn't, he gave Dean the option of showing red, and show the red he did, inevitably.

Before we castigate Dean, I thought he refereed very fairly. He gave them a yellow first-half for diving. Ramires deserved a yellow in the first-half for kicking the ball away stupidly but was spared. Sure, he got the big call wrong but it looked bad to the naked eye, or overly aggressive at least. That's where Torres was stupid, because Dean knew he had beef with Vertonghen so he was going to be watching the two of them closely.

Torres played well second-half. He set up a couple of very good chances and he looked up for it. It's no more than we should expect however it's just that our expectations have fallen so low. It was encouraging. Now he just has to go out and win a game for us, as strikers of other clubs do all the time. We have every right to expect that of our strikers, it's just that it's been so long.

Unfortunately, as he did against Swansea under AVB, he's sabotaged himself and us by getting sent off just as he was discovering form, and again he can blame nobody but himself. I'm afraid it was rank stupidity. That doesn't make him a bad player. Drogba was stupid on occasion, as we all know. I'm not criticising his performance I'm just not apportioning blame to the officials or Vertonghen. I'm afraid Torres has to look at himself. He's left no room for manoeuvre on this one. He's going to be banned for four games and that doesn't help us one bit. It was a stupid red card and I don't see too many of our players getting stupid red cards, I see them keeping their emotions in check, and using their brains, most of the time.

Torres needs to start contributing to wins if he really wants to turn his fortunes at Chelsea around. He played well for thirty minutes, that's the reality. No more no less. We had them on the rack and we could have won, then he was sent off, that's the reality. It was a good day and a bad day at the office. One day he may just give us a good day.

Here's hoping.

In no way am I saying Torres was in the right over the sending off but for me, the aggression he showed was refreshing.

That bit anger and determination has been lacking on occasions from our team and it makes us push overs at times. We used to bully teams a little bit, be quite intimidating the likes of Drogba and Ballack were a real presence in every sense in the attacking third.

Now I think we can be too lightweight, sometimes you need to give your marker a little nudge, make them know you're up for the fight, rattle them a bit. That's what Torres was doing and it was working. Ignoring the hands to face incident his actual footballing contribution was very good, he was making his presence known, not shirking responsibility showing he wasn't going to be a push over and our attack looked all the better for it.

Agreed and for the most part I think he was doing that. The challenge he got sent off for was a wrongful decision but what I liked about it was that he challenged two separate opponents for consecutive headers.

He showed the desire to win the ball and that's what we need from Torres and the rest of the team, being pro-active and taking responsibility.

Whatever the arguments 4-game ban for that is just the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while.

If you compare it to Suarez bite the two differences are that 1. It left a clear mark and you can see it actually hurts Ivan a bit and 2. Suarez has a reputation. Without Suarez reputation 2-3 games would have been enough for that.

Following on from your point, another example of the this was the situation that lead to his first yellow when he was chasing down Vertonghen.

For once Torres was making a right nuisance of himself and the snarling nature of his play was refreshing to see in my opinion. He wasn’t just trotting around the pitch like a spare prick at a wedding he was chasing down everything, applying pressure to Vertonghen at every opportunity, competing for every ball and the effect was clear to see. Vertonghen was feeling the pressure, he was getting heated himself as you could see from his reaction before the scratch. He knew he was in game and the dual with Torres was one he wasn’t seemingly enjoying at all.

Torres should have been more clever and street smart as Davey has said as had he been more careful it could well have been Vertonghen that got himself sent off. He could have go a yellow for his part in the handbags, could have had a yellow for the dive and could just have easily had a yellow for the clash that got Torres his second yellow (the farcical nature of it means it could have gone either way in my opinion). He rightly got a yellow for the foul on Ramires and had we maintained the wave of pressure that we were applying you get the feeling there would have been more work for him to do defensively and things could have panned out differently.

i will be fukking livid if he gets a retrospective ban

last season, these 'tackles' went unpunished

Some, if not all, were bookings, hence they weren't permitted (under rules last season) to be reviewed.

There can be no argument in his defence if he is punished for his indiscretion. That said the second booking was an absolute disgrace, I'm having none of this he gave the referee the option to send him off. The day an official can't see that two players competed fairly in an aerial battle without any flailing arms is the day the referee should consider if he is truly upto speed with his game. Vertonghen made a meal of it which didn't help the referee but he should be making the decision on what he saw and not what he thought he did. As for the two incidents if the official punishes the first incident correctly , the second doesn't occur. Dean had a poor second half all round.

I'm sorry to abuse some of you but Jesus Christ a couple of you are soft. Scratch?? Seriously. He put his hand on his face. Its a very Spanish thing to do. Its like the Italian kiss of death. You put your hand on a face almost like a slow motion slap.. Its a show of dominance.

Some of you are acting like he gouged vertonghens eyes out. If he goes for this, the FA should be disgusted and a Man United player should be banned almost weekly.

I have to admit I've always liked players who have the ability to get under opponents skin. I'm using the word ability because it is a skill and you can use it and develop it. It is a nyance in the game and no means a way to win just a way to get your opponent out of his best focus.

Torres isn't known for that and he shouldn't really practice it as we are seeing the results here. Both the players were in it full on so I don't know how Torres was sent off and not both...

Dennis Wise had that in him and I always smiled when he pulled off his tricks with the opponent.

i dont think any of them were bookings

That isn't the point.  Professional footballers know the rules of the game they're playing, no matter how ludicrous they may be.  And what he did was blatantly against the rules.  Had that been a Barca player they'd have needed reconstruction surgery and we'd be banned from UEFA.  It's irritating because it was completely avoidable.  As Davy said, passion is great.  Wonderful to see that from him for the first time ever.  But he took it way too far and now it has cost both him and us.

How is it fair that they can have another look at this incident but not at the incident that got him sent off in the first place ? the rules of not turning over yellow cards is bullsh*t in my opinion, god the F.A are useless.

You may be right, my memory's not what it was. I seem to remember Aguero was booked but I could be wrong. However, in the case of McManaman for instance, the referee saw it at the time and decided not to punish him, that's why it wasn't reviewed, as per the rules last season which have now changed.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong i'm just saying those are the rules, and as Castiel has pointed out, Torres has transgressed the rules, it will be reviewed and he will get banned IMO.

Jamie Redknapp on Torres' performance on Saturday.

He says there are rumours in the game that Torres leaves training early, by which I suppose he means he's the first (or one of the first) to leave.

Wonder if Frank's been talking to him .. ?

On the basis that Suarez was banned for 10 games for the bite, Torres should get 4 for the scratch.

A shame really as he was outstanding in that second half.

If he shows the same hunger and drive tomorrow night, I will be starting to dream that there is life in the boy still.

Torres looked to be finding red hot form against Swansea two seasons ago and then went and got himself sent off. I hope this isn't history repeating itself.

He looked like he used to look in a red shirt on Saturday, in my opinion. That is the best I have seen him play since he signed for us. But the problem he has is that he can't seem to just have a stormer without controversy. He needs to start learning to keep his temper in check, stop diving and fouling (and scratching opponents' faces) and maybe we can have a world class striker on our hands again.

I find it funny and very dramatic that it's labelled 'scratch' and it fits nicely into a media/FA agenda.

It looked like ihe attempted to grab his cheek, more of a 'brush' really.

Let's face it, any bloke getting his nails into anyone's skin is hardly going to hurt is it. You would feel more pain from kitten claws!
