Graham Poll just makes a complete fool out of himself saying that. Not knowing him or his stories at all I read a few lines and he sounds like a biased c**t.

The yellow was from the trip and the afterplay combined probably and it was fair. If he'd leave it at the trip it probably wouldn't have been a card at all.

One thing that is totally overlooked here is that Torres's facetroll was very soft. It doesn't leave even the smallest mark in Verthongens face and the belgian doesn't even touch his face after it like you would do if it hurt even a bit. It is a soft thing and much is made of it. Again these are grown men who are not made of paper.

The second offence was a joke. It was 50/50 and in 50/50's you either give a card to both or to neither. The decision was a joke and Now Torres misses a game.

The difficulty with elbows to the face is intend, sometimes the team can say is that they were simply protecting the ball and didn't know where the opposition's player face is. I remember Rooney getting away with one against Wigan where it was perfectly clear he knew where the opposition player was and nothing was made of it.

Can't really have a problem if he gets a 3 match ban for violent conduct, hand to face is always going to lead to that in this day and age - what irks me is that I thought he was booked because Dean saw the raised arm, but it appears he booked him for the "foul" and that "foul" was generous to say the least. If Dean had booked him for the raised arm and altercation they would not have the opportunity to slap a 3 match ban for him.

Four games! You got to be kidding me...

Hope it is just a story and he serves the one that is already a maximum sentence over the thing between two grown men who were both in the same frame of mind.

Sometimes i hate how much of a pussy game this has become. I understand the bans for racism and tough injuring tackles that can end careers but a cat scratch fight where no one is even remotely hurt. Same goes with the Hazard incident with the c**ty ball boy. Let the emotions flow a bit.

Not sure how Poll is managing to pin Torres action onto Jose. It gets very boring and predictable with reading about how "evil" Mourinho in truth and I find it an extremely lazy opinion a lot of the time.

Not sure I agree with Poll's assertion that Torres raising his hands to Vertonghen is "cowardly" especially as he doesn't actually explain what he felt was cowardly about it. If anything confronting someone is the opposite to cowardly surely? It was malicious yes but cowardly? No I don't think so, again it's a lazy use of a word that is used for all the negative connotations it carries.

As for the scratching/gouging incident itself, my take on it is that it was a stupid thing for Torres to do (to raise his hands to an opponent) but the action itself I think looks a whole lot worse when played in super-duper slow mo than in real time where, when it initially happened I thought it all looked rather pathetic on both players parts who throughout the match were pushing, shoving and grappling with each other.

Graham Poll. Graham Poll. World cup, and you f**ked it up! The man is an idiot. Who cares what he thinks.

Torres was playing very well in the second half, but he's an idiot for doing that scratching. He will get banned and he deserves it.

Shame because it will probably calm him down again and we could see the passive / apathetic nature of him again on the field. I like the angry Torres, one with a bit of fire and fight.

Not a scratch. Did you see any marks on his face? Did he hold his face for pain and agony? Soft touch on a puddy face. 4-game ban wouldn't even be embarrassing, it would be a joke.

I know it is for the look of the incident but no one got killed and Torres doesn't have a reputation. It is pretty much the same if Torres had gone to a full speed tackle studs up but in the last minute he pulled the studs down and only laid a soft tackle. No real crime done. FA tries to protect people for nothing.

If he is gonna get a 4 match ban then he might as well have just decked him. The punishment would be the same.

I assume it depends on what his first yellow card was issued for.

If it was for the "trip" then retrospective punishment can be handed out. If it was for the altercation then surely it has to be viewed as dealt with seeing as the match day official has already issued what he deemed an appropriated punishment.

If he was booked for the trip then I've got to say he was sent off for two extremely soft "fouls".

After the event they can say what they like about what the yellow was for. Torres will get stitched up with a longer ban.

For the first time in 3 season we see the Torres we'd all love and he gets a 4 match ban. Actually for the first time pretty much everyone have agreed he played very well although he didn't score. Progress!

I assume the referee in his match report has to confirm what each booking issued was for.

If he contradicts what he says in his match report to what he says on the pitch I would assume it is contested in some way.

Scratch or no scratch it is considered violent conduct - hand on face etc. (albeit it's a very girly thing to do, who scratches people, other than cats and violent women??)

Of course it looks worse in slow motion than it is, but Torres was stupid for doing that and he will get a ban, no doubt about it.

However, there should also be retrospective action for players who obviously cheat like Vertongen did, zero contact with his face. Disgusting.

As of this season the FA can take retrospective action whether the ref saw it or not.

And let's not forget there is plenty of precedent for them taking zero action even when the ref missed it. Like Suarez punching Ivan at Anfield late in 2011-2, and Ferdinand on Torres at OT last season.

Ah okay, I didn't understand they could take action even if the referee has already dealt with the incident.

Hmmm, does that undermine the match day officials? But I guess that's a whole other argument.

Still, if Torres does receive an additional punishment he only has himself to blame and it's going to be on Eto'o and Ba to step up and deliver the goods.

To be fair mate most of them need undermined.

I think over all Torres deserved his red card. The second yellow was bollocks but looking at things he did through out the game i dont think many can argue that a red card was coming his way.

Its a shame because it was nice to see him trying and working hard. He just needs to know when to control himself a bit better. You cant put your hands on another plays head or face anymore. As silly as it seems thats the rules. Look at Drogba in the CL final, he only gave a little tap but was sent off.

Players know this so i just dont understand why they still do it.

Defenders always get the benefit of the doubt in 50/50 challenges in their half unless it's blatant, I just have to remain everyone how Drogba got yellow carded for Johny Evans kung fu kicking him in the chest and breaking his ribs. After that decision nothing can really surprise me

I'm just of the opinion of, where does it end?

I like the use of goal line technology because it is so black and white. Did the ball cross the line or not? Yes or no, sorted.

When you open up the idea of retrospective punishments I just think you're suddenly opening things up too far. The match day officials are there to oversee the game and make the decisions as they see them at the time, the fact that they get things wrong, for me at least, just adds to the excitement of football. When you start breaking things down and re-officiating after the game is finished that takes away a little of the magic for me. I'm not just speaking about the Torres incident but in the wider sense.

Dont agree, if it puts things right like blatant chesting I am all for it.

Jt is the best chester of a ball there's ever been. I don't think he needs punishing for that.

To come back to the reviewing of incidents and taking retrospective action, and all the precedents for doing sod-all (numerous Rooney incidents, Ronaldo kicking out and not being done, Gerrard elbowing Michael Brown a few seasons ago http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1258346/Liverpool-skipper-Steven-Gerrard-escapes-ban-flooring-Pompeys-Michael-Brown-swinging-forearm.html), let's not forget that the FA were prepared to add to Hazard's standard 3-match ban last season. Everyone - including journos - seemed to think, with the Suarez bite, that he'd only have got a 3-match ban if the ref had seen it and sent him off, and that the only reason he got 10 games was because the ref had missed it. The Hazard case proved otherwise, as the officials saw it and dealt with it at the time, but they were still prepared to give him a longer ban. And only the intervention of this forum shamed the FA into dropping the extra charge.
