Gary Cahill - PL CL FAC LC EL champion

Featured Replies

Watching the PSG game a certain Brazilian reminded me of one of our best CB's in recent years who is no longer here.... Don't know if the youth system will be able to adequately fill the holes that will occur when JT leaves. I agree that Cahill is a good player but his position in the first team could definitely be improved upon.

I wasn't on here when Alex left but i was angry as hell when i heard he couldn't train with the 1st team anymore, what the hell was that all about ?

He is a very very good defender, i think he is better than Luiz and Cahill that's for sure. I don't get why we never wanted him anymore, he was always solid and i can't remember him being anything but good for us. The decision making by us really confuses me at times.

Better than Luiz? Nice try, Alex doesnt even dominate Ligue 1 attackers who are pretty awful on the whole. Maybe he had good game against Barcelona, I didnt see but he is not "very very good".

       I agree.

Martin O'Neill did not think highly of him as he let him leave Villa for Bolton.

He was selected for England by Capello only as a replacement  for Lescott.

I would never rate Gary in the same class as John Terry, Sol Campbell, Tony Adams or Rio Ferdinand.

I dont think he was ever lauded as one of the best defenders of his generation, unlike the players you've mentioned above. He's seen as a solid defender but never a prolific one.

Defence is still a bit of a liability for me going forward. No longer the tandem of Terry and Carvalho that was a legitimate CB force. With Cole waning as well what was once a fearsome defensive corps is defo in transition

The Southampton game aside, the defending has been a lot better of late. Luiz and Ivanovic are playing well together for the first time all season. If they can maintain this form, it would be massive for us.

Notice how as soon as Cahill is out injured, our defending on a general level improves...He's got a lot of work to do.

yet ivan was shocking v Southampton and in a number of games this season...luiz has had his ropey moments too and jt (since his injury) ...point is, all cb's have had their poor moments this season not just cahill

Agreed. Over the whole season, the defending has been below par. All the CB's have been weak at times, but Cahill has been the weakest. The stats in the article I posted on an earlier page make that clear.

The good thing is that the Ivanovic/Luiz combination has worked well against West Brom, United and Sunderland. Hopefully that continues in the league and FA Cup. JT and Cahill when he returns can deal with the Europa.

those stats don't look good for cahill, but I think they're somewhat misleading...I don't think he has been the weakest defender this season, just think we have been poor at the back all season...cahill wasn't on the pitch against Southampton or sunderland and look at the goals we conceded there...

that being said, he definitely looks happier with JT next to him and reckon he is not defending as well as this time 12 months ago...but again, you can say that for a number of players!

when has luiz been ropey??

Did you watch the game last night? His positioning was woeful.

Whilst he has got better from last year Luiz is still the weakest CB we have IMO. Just hasn't got the discipline to stay where he should be and hold a line. And that hands behind the back thing drives me nuts. Has he ever actually stopped any crosses or balls being delivered when he does that? Not that I've seen.

only stopped a certain goal against sunderland, but who cares about that . . .

One game totally nullifies his long string of good performances. Ok.

Also, he has blocked crosses, and he isn't the only one who has failed to do so either. On the hands behind his back thing, if it hits his arm its a pen or free kick? How is keeping his arms out the way NOT a good thing?

I take it you mean the one from Adam Johnson that hit him in the face?

Personally I am going to have to disagree with you. As of late I believe Luiz has really stepped up his performances, especially against Sunderland where in my eyes he was our MotM. Although he may have had a poor game last night, no chance in hell is he our weakest CB at the moment. In fact I may be inclined to say Terry, he just hasn't looked himself and he didn't exactly cover himself in glory yesterday. At present I would have to say Iva and Luiz are probably our strongest CB pairing, Terry just looks to me that he is off the pace ..... don't know if it is a post injury blip he is going through but for me he hasn't looked anywhere near as commanding as he usually is.

Also on the hands behind the back thing he does, surely its to prevent him getting a dodgy handball call against him?!

The thing that really confused me is he seems to struggle with his positional discipline more when playing alongside JT, which I thought would be the complete opposite. I can only summise its down to one of 2 things, either he feels he has to cover for JT`s lack of pace more and wanders to his side more (which he seems to do) or he would rather be the controlling centre back and struggles to take a back seat so to speak. Then he has bursts where he just lunges in for no reason or seemingly loses concentration. Its very odd.

The last word in that bolded sentence is the key thing.

Indeed. What games has he been watching this season? Granted, Cahill has had a handful of superb performances, such as Arsenal at home, but in general he's been below par.

I still cannot get over the fact (yes, FACHT) that Ivan basically handed the first leg of the Swansea Carling Cup Semi to them.  I don't Cahill has done anything nearly as bad.
