Oscar - Little Diamond

Featured Replies

I agree on Oscar, I actually think that's an area we could improve in

I always felt hazard would eventually move to the number 10 role. Maybe opening up a space for rues to play on the left ;)

I understand Oscar has a different role than most no.10s.

I realise that his workrate and the pressure he puts on defences is vital for our side and that Jose loves this.

I know that he is only 23 and can improve.

I see that he is capable of the extraordinary, be it stunning goals or outrageous passes or pieces of skill.

However like the last few posters i have a niggling feeling that maybe we could do better in that position.  Seeing the way Willian has been playing lately he could maybe do a better job.

...please don't kill me....

Never been a huge fan of Oscar think he is a good player but the position he plays in id like someone who is more smooth and skilfull on the ball. The likes of Isco,Hazard Silva that type of player. I never get excited when Oscar gets the ball yet when Hazard gets it i always feel something will happen. I understand why Mourinho likes him and why he fits his style of play but its just a personal preference of mine.

And i have said many times on here i think he could play deeper, like swap Fabregas and Oscar around even though i like Fabregas deeper i feel Fabregas is more creative but Oscar has better defensive capabilities and workrate.

I felt he escaped a lot of criticism today. Good play on the goal but besides that his first half performance was shocking, gave the ball away so many times.

He can't seem to keep the ball well or do anything with it under pressure. If you watched the Spurs match today and you saw what the likes of Lamela and Eriksen could do in such tight spaces Arsenal were not giving them room however they were still able to keep the ball and link up play regardless of the tight space. Oscars touch seems to let him down massively, especially in the centre.

He does lack flair also I find. I wont compare him to the likes of Isco or Silva, they are very creative players, Oscar is different. Oscar does run the game when he's actually playing well and up to top standard. However that's actually a rare thing, and I actually mean that, it's rare he will keep the ball efficiently in the tight areas and expose the cracks in the opposition.

His pressing and play against Swansea was fantastic, he is good at pressing, but it's rare that you get that play from Oscar consistently, and that for me is what does let him down as a player.

Escaped criticism? What's the past page been about then ?

I was referring to the match day thread, everyone was calling for Ramires's and Drogbas head in the first half.

Par for the course in match day threads. Drogba was certainly the worst of the lot unfortunately.

I think his pressing is his most consistent ability. Even when he is having a poor game on the ball he harries the opponents well and makes good tackles.

Yeah I agree he was, so I didn't find it surprising but I didn't see a mention of Oscars performance, not that it's a big of a deal I was just pointing it out. Since a handful of people wanted Drogba and Ramires subbing.

I like Oscar but I do think he lacks that creative spark on a consistent basis. I know oscar is very good at pressing, but Mourinho has played fabregas in that role, who doesn't press anywhere near as much.

it begs the question do we really need a number 10 with Oscar's pressing qualities? Or could we get away with playing a fabregas type in the 10?

Would we be too open with a matic, fabregas pivot, and a player like a coutinho or Eriksen ahead of them?

Hard to argue any of the starting 11 have not been exceptional so far this season, with us being 7 points clear, but there will always be room for improvement.

I think the way Oscar plays is needed for us to be successful. He might have an off day but most the time his defensive work goes unnoticed. Costa is always pushing and you always see Oscar there and if the opposition boot it up you will see Oscar again defending and setting off for the next attack. I feel how he plays and Willain to an extent allow Hazard to play the way he does.

Oscar for me is the no.10 version of Ramires if that makes any sense. Wonderful effort and work rate which in a lot of cases makes up for their inferior technical ability and everyone appreciates these sort of players and what they bring to the team. I realise I'm being harsh on Oscar here who is not bad technically by any means. But when you are playing in his position for a club like ours, you get compared to the elite, the likes of Hazard and Fabregas.

When Ramires was replaced by Fabregas we became a better team, and now I don't think anyone can imagine going back to Ramires as a starter. I don't see this being the case with Oscar and I can't see him being on the bench permanently because he's too good for that, but at this moment I think we would see a similar improvement in our play if he was benched for Cuadrado.

At this stage of the season I can't see Jose switching players roles. Which is why I don't think Willian move inside.

Possibly we'll see some away games with Fàbregas playing in Oscar's position with Ramires in the deeper role but for the most part Oscar's going to be starting when fit.

Oscar loses the ball far too often. Playing him deeper would be a huge risk.

Oscar doesn't have the skills Hazard has, but playing in the middle of the park behind Drogba puts all the pressure on him with Drogba pulling away no defenders.  He's a completely different player when Costa is up front.  The thing that's great about him though, is if he's having an off day offensively, he's still got his tremendous work rate.

Sorry G4 but that's a case of the old blue tinted specs - well in the case of Cazorla anyway. I would take him over Oscar all day long, as I would Coutinho and Erikkson. When Oscar plays well he is great but he drifts out of games far too often to the point where you forget he is even on the pitch. If he can't contribute more in games, I think he needs to start being rotated a lot more often.

You know that Errickson has one assist all season?

As for Coutiniho - don't worry about him, I put him in my fantasy football team this weekend so that will be the end of his season

The fact he has one assist all season goes to show how much statistics tell the story really, because if you watch him play he is fantastic, not just his goal scoring but he gets the team going with his fantastic play.

I wanted Drog and Oscar subbing, but I'd be absolutely gutted if we sold him. He was just having an off day.

I have to agree with posters like Slawth and jack_super_class here.

If there is 1 player I could replace it wouldn't be Willian, Cahill or Ivanovic it would be Oscar.

I appreciate his workrate and his pressing abilities and I understand that he fits in well in this side. But I'd like to see someone else in that spot.

I might be a bit biased since I have never been a huge fan of his, in my early days on this forum I remember getting a lot of stick for that. But sadly nothing much has changed.

You can't have it both way's ... we can't beat willian with a stick for poor stats and then on the other hand ignore them for Oscar. Erickson is hte main man for spurs, everything goes through him. We aren't that one dimensional. He's a good player, no doubt about it but if he was that good spurs would be in the top four comfortably. (See a cirtain suarez last season)

I maintain that we have a habit of looking at our own more critically then we do players on other sides... when your stressed out you notice every little pass go wrong, when you don't care you tend to miss the sh*t a bit

Maybe it's just another case of competition.

We still have another spot to fill, Salah has gone, we can get a replacement, should we look out for another CAM? or move Hazard in there now and then? Because sometimes we lack creativity, I thought we seriously lacked it against Villa, okay we did manage to get the win. But the Villa defence was dire, just look at the first goal, no other side in the Premier League would concede a goal as bad as that. They were a lose side until they managed to score. However our sloppy play was dire, I'm not surprised we got a lot of criticism in the match day thread, yes we overcame a bogey side but if you looked at the circumstances, you can see some disappointments.

I'm not sure what to make of Oscar, I like to think we haven't seen the best of him and I am confident that is true, but I think he needs to raise his standard of performances, as does Willian but from the last two games three games Willian has looked much better.

cazorla's good but overall I'd never take him over oscar.

most players of that type drift out of games. when cazorla does that you have a passenger. that isn't the case with oscar. as barak said- maybe in another thread- a big difference is that people will compare their in depth analysis of our own players with the highlights of others.

Except his goalscoring record, his number of assists and his defensive presence.

He's a young man but he's key to what we do and inconsistency is something that comes with being a young player. People talk about us bringing through youth but they will have ups and downs and its our job as supporters to stick by them.
