Can someone with knowledge of sports medicine elaborate on whether this is a career changer?  Not so much the time it takes to heal, but whether it'll rob him of something as happened with Essien and Joe Cole?

Until January there could be a place for Ake or Lewis in the squad.Ake has showed a lot of promise last season.

What's happened to Ake? No loan deal?

Can someone with knowledge of sports medicine elaborate on whether this is a career changer?  Not so much the time it takes to heal, but whether it'll rob him of something as happened with Essien and Joe Cole?

Tough to say as it depends on how well the surgery goes, rehab and so on. But these days he will most likely be fine if all goes well. Essien and Joe Coles surgery happened a long time ago and things have drastically improved in sports medicine since then.

Or we could've had Romeu, instead of sitting on the Valencia bench and he could train under a better manager.

Imagine the outcry that would occur if Romeu would have hung around in the squad while not getting a single game. At least hes somewere he has a shot at getting some games, but the fact that he cant break into a midtable spanish side is pretty telling imo.

It's a 40 minute surgery and it takes about 6 months to heal. Then comes training and harder training, etc and it comes out in about 9 months. I don't think it's a career changer, but it's quite a major setback, especially for young playets. Van Nistelrooy tore his twice, and so did Frimpong as of late. He'll be back at the end of this season, probably and will be in full force for the next one.

Im not a doctor but i can tell you from my own experience that tearing your knee ligaments is something most people, me included, dont ever recover from mentally

Everytime youre in full sprint, or when you see your about to collide with another player, the fear of that happening again will pop out. By doctors accounts my knee is fine, yet it still feels different when running at full speed and im pretty sure ill never be as fast as i was before the injury, mostly because of that fear holding me back

None of them are really central midfielders though.  Luiz is a bit of a mystery, Oscar has been nailed on as our No.10 by Jose, and KDB hasn't featured there once.  I'm told he played there in Germany, but to what extent?  Jose seems to see him as a winger.  Our CM really needs some love in coming transfer windows, and Chalobah needs to make the step up as soon as possible.  I dread meeting City and watching Toure boss us around for the third year running.

Well yeah, I dread the possibility of Yaya bossing us too, and now that MVG is out, we have four players competing for 2 spots, one of whom (Essien) there has to be big questions about, and one of whom (Lampard) is 35. We better hope that Mikel and Ramires stay fit, and I never thought I'd say that about Mikel.

KDB? As far as I'm aware, he played in midfield for Bremen and he was very successful. He played there in the latter stages of his career at Genk, and again, he excelled. He's played winger of course and he may play there for Belgium (I don't know) but I think midfield is his preferred position and we may now see more of him there, due to the fact there is less competition in midfield than there is in the more advanced spots.

Having said that, the impression I got (I may be wrong) was that MVG is more of a DM whereas KDB is more in the Lampard mould.

Previously under Mourinho, we were just so dominant in midfield. Maka, Essien and Lampard were all quite formidable and comprised a scary trio. Essien and Lampard could shoot from outside the box as well, as could Ballack when he joined. Now we don't look half as formidable in that department although Ramires is a personal favourite of mine. If he's out on Saturday I think we have problems. He's a key key player. Lampard is the obvious replacement but as the season ensues we may see KDB stake a claim.

As someone said in another thread, if we had Aguero and Yaya, well, that would be the title well and truly sewn up.

Personally I'd also take Kompany too, just to be sure.

Having had tons of injuries through my playing days (still playing btw) I know exactly what you mean. The mental aspect is also something you can never predict the outcome of. With that said, I think he will be fine. They have come a long way just these past years and the doctor performing the surgery is most likely the best this country has to offer.

Can't help but wonder if we'll look to bring in someone in January in light of this.

4 players for the 2 most physically demanding positions on the field isn't much, and with Ramires injured our 3 options don't look like world beaters.

MvG injured, Romeu/Chalobah/Josh out on loan, and i'd be surprised if Luiz or Ake were given many games in midfield unless we get more injuries before January.

It's unfortunate because it's hard to get any value for money in January and I doubt we'll break the bank for anyone, so we may end up picking up a mediocre player that ends up blocking the progress of our many young CM's into the first team, similar to Ba last year.

Didn't Van nistilroy, inure a simaler injury before his transfer to united and I think it delayed the transfer by a year.. PSV paid for the recovery and then he buggered of. Hopefully MVG has a simaler recovery

Granted he's a beast of a man, but Adrian Peterson (American Football player) had a blown ACL, repaired and he ran just as good after. The mental aspect is a very good question though. Hopefully because he's young he'll bounce back quickly. Get well soon MvG!

I was going to reference Peterson as well.  He is the rare case of such mental and physical strength that he was better than before and at full speed only 9 months after his surgery.

On the flip side, Derek Rose (basketball player) had the same injury and was cleared to play by every doctor he saw but he hasn't played a game because he says it "doesn't feel right". Much like Lane said above.  It has been 18 months since his surgery and he was cleared at around 10 months.  It is very mental for him.  He dominates at practice but doesn't feel comfortable enough to play a game.

Different situations for everyone.

Operation done, he's on the mend.

Well, at least he was afforded the opportunity to wear that snazzy outfit.

It must be great to be at a top club, you get the best hospital care and people working with you.

Your normal sunday league player certainly wouldnt get that treatment.

I wish Justin all the best though, hopefully he can come back stronger next season. Although i think he will be loaned out next season.

  • 2 weeks later...

Encouraging signs already. Bit by bit he'll get there.

As the name "Anti Gravity" suggests, they are specialist physio machines that use air pressure technology (no idea what mind you), designed to take the weight and impact of walking / running.

I said this before but in my opinion as long as he didn't tear his cartilage or meniscus he should be able to get the ACL reconstruction surgery and be just fine in 7-9 months. If he had torn his articular cartilage or his meniscus his knee would never be the same since the meniscus cannot regrow, and cartilage cannot regrow exactly the way it was.

I personally have had 6 ops on my left knee (4 times cartilige removal and 2 clean outs) and one cartilige removal on my right knee last year and i'm now going for double full knee replacement surgery in a months time at age 53.

All my problems started with a cartilige tear when i was 21ish and i managed to maintain a volleyball playing career well into my 30's although left knee was never the same ... hopefully MvG's knee was a straight forward ligament tear as this can be repaired or get ligament replaced IMHO it might not look good for the future.
