Nemanja Matic - Great Player?

Featured Replies

If I was a betting man I would put money on Matic's red being overturned.

Yup, me too.

Weirdly optimistic.

I don't think it will be overturned, the FA can't be seen to be condoning that sort of reaction regardless of how understandable it is.

Not sure if it is possible but I think it is more likely for the ban to be reduced to 1 one game rather than 3 if anything were to be done.

It won't be condoning it though - they will overturn it and change it to a yellow, which we all agree was the correct initial punishment for the offence anyway.

Do the FA have the power to do that?

Can a card be reduced to a yellow on appeal?

If they can there is definitely a case to be made but common sense does not often prevail when it comes to the FA.

I can't find any reference to an English game, but can to an appeal in Scotland where a red was reduced to a yellow on appeal. I would have thought we used the same rules for process ?

Nemanja Matic: Chelsea to appeal against midfielder's red card

Chelsea are to appeal against the red card shown to Nemanja Matic during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Burnley.
The midfielder was sent off after reacting angrily to a tackle by Ashley Barnes and pushing the Clarets player to the ground.
The Blues have until 13:00 GMT on Tuesday to submit their evidence to the Football Association.
Matic is out of Sunday's Capital One Cup final against Tottenham but could play if Chelsea's appeal succeeds.

I'm not fussed if he missed the final. Our league games are far more important

He misses two of those though, plus it'd be nice to win a trophy.

Not sure on what grounds it can be overturned though since the ref clearly saw it and he does push him. The fact that it's below the neck could help him but still, not too hopeful.

Howard Webb said the same, a push on the body is a yellow card not a red.

It should be overturned it's absolutely ridiculous.

Wasn't Howard Webb talking about the kind of shoves you see at corners, etc, basically incidents in which players are challenging for the ball? Not ones where you walk across a pitch and aggressively shove someone off the ball?

I don't think the appeal will be successful and we actually risk them increasing the suspension, although I think with the way pundits and such have backed Matic I don't see them doing that.

Any one who has suffered a long lating injury at the hands of a bad tackle will have no problem with Matic's reaction. We don't want another Paul Eilliot situation.. just look at the picture ball is long gone, its late, its of the ground, it's high. it's a leg breaker

I look at that picture and I feel sick, and relieved at the same time that he didn't sustain a broken leg. Many other players would have been injured and gone for a year right there.

His reaction is completely understandable and his suspension should be revoked but I don't hold out hope that the FA will do the right thing here and apply common sense to this case.

It's a cup final it's damn important, you do realise winning that could be the catalyst towards us winning the title and losing it could be the catalyst that disrupts are title challenge.

Everyone shoves on corners, that wouldn't really make any sense.

I can't remember exactly however Gary Neville brought it up and tried to get a video of it yesterday.

WHAT HAPPENED: Burnley striker Barnes appeared to catch Matic just below the knee with a challenge during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. The Chelsea midfielder was then sent off for his reaction as he pushed his opponent to the floor.

DERMOT'S VIEW: "On the replay, quite clearly, it was a red card. I think the referee saw it but I don’t think he recognised the severity of it. I was watching the game live and the commentator didn’t even recognise the severity of it. If you look at the reaction of the players, it’s only Matic that realises the seriousness of the tackle. He reacts, but the other players don’t. When you look at it without doubt it’s a very bad tackle, it’s a red card."

Matic’s reaction that saw him sent off

DERMOT'S VIEW: "Everybody in the country will be saying how unfortunate he (Matic) is. But everybody knows you can’t react like that. He’s reacted badly and he’s reacted violently towards his opponent, so the referee has sent him off. It is a red card for violent conduct."

Not holding my breath now. As I said, Matic was stupid for reacting. Whats the point reacting that angrily only just to push him over?

Not so much stupid as human.

Everyone shoves on corners, that wouldn't really make any sense.

I tried looking for the video/audio but couldn't find it, you would think something like that would be easy to find.

I think Howard Webb was talking about normal circumstances, Gary has then taken that and applied it to the Matic situation.

Win or lose we need to win our games. Jose needs to concentrate on getting us back to winning ways instead of commenting on these cases.

Glad Matic is allright. Best midfielder in the league!

Chelsea, whose lead at the top of the Premier League may have been cut to two points by the time they resume their pursuit of the title, are expected to call on evidence from Tottenham Hostpur’s derby draw with West Ham on Sunday in their case to have Matic’s sanction reduced. Jan Vertonghen reacted to a challenge from Mark Noble on Nabil Bentaleb in that game by pushing the visitors’ midfielder to the ground but neither player was punished. Vertonghen is set to start Sunday’s showpiece.

Chelsea, who have until 1pm on Tuesday to submit their evidence and are pursuing the claim with the backing of their owner, Roman Abramovich, are considering citing a number of other incidents this season in evidence as they argue Matic’s suspension should be reconsidered. They include another clash involving Vertonghen, his grapple with Sheffield United’s Chris Basham in the semi-final of the Capital One Cup. Swansea’s Wayne Routledge had a red card rescinded after he was sent off for retaliation following a foul by QPR’s Karl Henry on New Year’s Day.

The club have also scrutinised footage of Jack Wilshere thrusting his head into Marouane Fellaini’s chest, an offence that went ignored, and Joe Hart’s confrontation with the referee, Michael Oliver, that did not prompt sanction in the Manchester derby. Once their dossier of evidence has been submitted, an independent regulatory commission will hear the case on Tuesday with a judgement expected either way by close of business.

Good stuff.

Apparently the vine of Vertonghen's shove has been taken down because 'it contained mild violence'. I know this because it was my son who posted it, and got 125,000 views before it got removed.
