Jonty Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 (edited) In a recent interview on Czech TV, Kalas referred to himself as an extra cone for training sessions. A few weeks later, he's making his Premier League debut against a team who had won 11 straight games, the highest scoring striker in Europe and the highest scoring team in the country, playing for the league title for the first time in two decades. He manages 90 minutes and a Man of the Match worthy performance, at 20 years old, on debut, putting in a series of crunching tackles on Suarez and showing composure and decision making well beyond his years. A performance he nor any of us will be forgetting any time soon. But does he deserve a more regular spot in the team next season, while he will likely have Terry, Cahill, Ivanovic, Luiz and now Zouma to compete with? We know Jose is a man loath to rotate his back line unless absolutely necessary, and our first choice CB pairing have been impervious all season. This also raises the question of how many other younger members of our club are ready for the step up? Could the likes of Chalobah, Ake, McEacheran and Baker put in similarly commanding performances if given the chance? Either way, fantastic job young man, well worthy of his own "appreciation" thread. Theafonis Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Nice title. Definitely deserves to start a few more matches after that one.
KrazyTea Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Ya our centre backs actually look good for the future, still a lot of proving to be done, but I remember just several months back how CB was a major concern for us but not any more.
Ramigoal7 Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 He far exceeded my expectations. I feel bad for him that it took 9 months.
enigma Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 We've also got 20 year old Omerou out on loan to boro, who is making big noise too. We are truly blessed in the central defensive area.
Bucks Blue Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Superb. A 20 year old (my age) coming into the biggest game of the season and ends up having the best players of the season in his back pocket. Just sensational. Was worried at first but can safely say I'd have no worries seeing him in the team.. In fact.. I'd encourage it more often! What a player we have here.
Zola Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 He did fantastic!! Some lovely slide tackles, great timing and so unlucky not to score from the corner, just a little late to reaching it! He certainly didnt look out of place one bit. Very good performance in such a big game!
ForeverCarefree Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 If Zouma goes out on loan next season we might see Kalas more involved, especially if Luiz were to make his much rumoured switch to Barca.
Barn Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I'm a massive Luiz fan but am now feeling that I wouldn't be upset to see him go. It was a great performance from Kalas, he didn't try to do too much he just done his job exactly the way it should be done. And I've got to say that Brana next to him and helping him through was top grade as well, he showed real leadership yesterday that I don't think we've seen from him before.
barak81 Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 If Zouma goes out on loan next season we might see Kalas more involved, especially if Luiz were to make his much rumoured switch to Barca. A lot of that also depends on what we buy in center mid, at the moment I see Luiz as a first choice center mid next season. Kalas made 2 mistakes yesterday, misjudged a hearder, and gave the ball away then turned his back on the ball. but other then that he was kick perfect. Great timing in the tackle, and knows when to throw him self at the ball or choose to stand. It's hard to make a call as to how bright is future will be as I have seen many players come in that I thought would end up being the dogs.. (two of them playing against us yesterday) and it just hasn't happened. I guess if he's good enough it will happen
Zeta Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Tbh I would be perfectly happy for Kalas to replace Luiz as one of our CB options.
Remodez Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Looked even more solid than Ake did for us, we've got some great young centre backs. I hope we use them in the future. I wouldn't be against Kalas starting the rest of the matches personally but I suppose a lot depends results around us.

That's a good point about brana, not only was he in a position he rarely plays now he had to help a kid through his debut, and he did both fantastically. No wonder he's one of Jose's favourites.
Guest RFC_CFC Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Looked quality and shows we can rely on our youth when required. Hope he's part of the team more next season and this shows we might not miss Luiz as much as first feared (in defence anyway).
Spiller86 Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 (edited) I thought he did well be he was also well protected. Certainly I don't think last night is definitive but it was a very good start. Edit: Just to add to Barn's point Ivan was quite superb and for me showed the kind of leadership required to be the club's captain after JT leaves. Edited April 28, 2014 by Spiller86
big blue Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 so many good centre backs at the club now, he looked good but I do think theres more chance of zouma staying and kalas leaving on loan. At least that performance will bode well for potential suitors.
AnIrishTrueBlue Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Mourinho will give him more chances now for sure. Ba did well and got some games. Kalas will play agains't Norwich.
Lane Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I think his performance on sunday is overrated and im reserving my expectations until he plays more matches
bluegraham Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I always criticise Jose for not giving youth a chance I'm delighted it went well for kalas and it just shows we do have good youth players. Hopefully Jose will trust more of the youngsters in furture
Bluehatter Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I think his performance on sunday is overrated and im reserving my expectations until he plays more matches Errrrrm what? He marked the player of the year out of the game in his first game in a chelsea shirt! How on earth can you say the performance was overrated?

jack_super_class Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 (edited) I think his performance on sunday is overrated and im reserving my expectations until he plays more matches Agreed, he did play well but he was very very very well protected. I would like to see him when there is space and he gets isolated one v one against a striker and see how he does. Edited April 28, 2014 by jack_super_class

I would like to see him when there is space and he gets isolated one v one against a striker and see how he does. Thank god the young man didn'take any mistakes he would be roasted by some on here. That was he's debut protected or not he didn't put a foot wrong and could have scored. Many a youngster could have crumbled in that atmosphere but he didn't. No pleasing some I guess.
