July 18, 201411 yr As third choice back up he can still do a job, and he may well step it up a notch since he would be back with Mourinho who he loves. It's not like we will be relying on him to spearhead our attack next season, he would get a few games in the League/FA Cup and is good option to bring on for his heading ability when defending or lumping the ball up for an emergency goal. He may have lost a yard or so of pace not that he was particularly fast or known for speed, but still I would rather bring on Drogba than Ba or Torres like last season if we were in need of something extra. I mean common Eto'o didn't do too bad at 39 did he, Drogba still has a season or two left in him.
July 18, 201411 yr Where has Lukaku called himself a complete striker? "Let me say that I am now the complete striker" http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/chelsea-fc-transfer-rumours-news/2014/6/9/5793338/chelsea-fc-romelu-lukaku-transfer-news-quotes
July 19, 201411 yr I wouldn't mind him coming back as long we sign another striker, which I doubt we will.
July 19, 201411 yr I dont think it matters anyway because the bottle job will leave this summer and probably go striaght to the media to tell everyone what he thinks of Chelsea. He cant hack it at a big club. He should go back to Everton because anyone above that is to much of a challenge for the coward. Did you find him in bed with your missus or something? You have an irrational level of hate for someone that's never done anything to detriment you or the club.
July 19, 201411 yr It is good reasoning. Just because Drogba was a great striker, it doesn't mean he'll be any good at teaching someone else to be as good as him. Just like great boxers don't always make great trainers.Of course not, but if people who know him think he'd do well he might do well. We don't know him. Jose knows him. And Drogba is such an influental figure he only needs to step into a room to make an impression. I'd love to see him back in this role.
July 19, 201411 yr What happens if he does play? How weird would that be seeing him wear a different number. Obviously 11 is taken. He did wear 15 but that's gone too. It would just be weird.
July 20, 201411 yr 10 mins to go in a game where we need a goal, even at 36 you just know Drogba could come on and make a huge difference In European games, maybe still yes ... but the premiership defences had Drogba pretty much sussed during his final years with us, IMO ... it was definitely the right time to go. Coach yes, player no for me ...
July 20, 201411 yr As a coach yes, but as a player it simply doesn't make any sense to me even the romantic aspect of it, particularly if he will be taking up a non-homegrown place. Staggering, really.
July 20, 201411 yr Author http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2014/7/20/5920655/report-didier-drogba-to-sign-one-year-deal-at-chelsea-early-next-week At first I was against this, but the more I think about it the more I think his blue blood will be needed this season with so many new signings and the stalwarts that have left the club. He may have lost his explosiveness but his eye for goal will surely never disappear, and if Jose thinks he is of value then he is of value. He has earned the right to retire at the club he loves hasn't he?
July 20, 201411 yr In European games, maybe still yes ... but the premiership defences had Drogba pretty much sussed during his final years with us, IMO ... it was definitely the right time to go. Coach yes, player no for me ... Bit disrespectful IMO. It was a case of him being past his fabulously high peak rather than EPL defences sussing him out. I do agree a coaching role rather than a playing one, but that said I would still fancy him to do a better job than Torres. Edited July 20, 201411 yr by just
July 20, 201411 yr I have no idea what to think of this. Half of me thinks the CL final should have been his last kick but the other half wants to see him in blue again!
July 20, 201411 yr From Eurosport: Reports in the French media suggest that Didier Drogba is to return to Chelsea on a one-year deal, with a view to moving on to the coaching staff. L'Equipe suggest that Drogba is relishing the opportunity to work with Jose Mourinho once more following his free transfer from Galatasaray. Chelsea have lost striking options in Demba Ba and Samuel Eto'o so far this summer, and 36-year-old Drogba is always likely to offer goals. The news broke ten years to the day that Drogba originally signed for the club from Marseille.
July 20, 201411 yr Just to keep Lukaku in line would be a good enough reason to sign him! Come back Drogs!!
July 20, 201411 yr I doubt he'd play much, he's list his pace but he's still strong as hell and good in the air. Think he could be a wonderful option to have.
July 20, 201411 yr would he be expected to play much? havent seen him at galatasary, hows he been? I don't think so. I think this only makes sense to mentor Lukaku, and I think his age will prevent him from displacing Torres for 3rd striker, so he'd basically be a 4th striker. I am assuming he would make some 10 minute cameos if we are chasing a goal.

I am assuming he would make some 10 minute cameos if we are chasing a goal. And take up the place of an over 21 non homegrown player. We already have a squad of 29 players!! admittedly 4 or 5 count as U21 but I cannot see the point of it. The only way I could see this transfer making sense would be if we sold Torres and kept Bamford at the club next year. Costa, Lukaku and Bamford coached and supported by Drogba. The worst effect this could have would be to scare Lukaku off even further and we then end up with a strikeforce of Costa, Torres and Drogba, I cannot see Torres or a 36 year old Drogba striking fear into opposiition hearts if Costa gets injured.
July 20, 201411 yr I personally will be pleased to see him back, even if it's only for a few cameo appearances. He's a true leader and a familiar respected face of our club, so having him around will be pretty cool. "Didier Drogba TRA LA LA LA LA! Didier Drogba TRA LA LA LA LA LA LA!" July 20, 201411 yr With us losing Lampard, Cole and Maybe Cech his experience and leadership will be vital for us next season

July 20, 201411 yr Nice write-up but gave nothing that we already know from this topic! Hope to see the Drog back in blue, if just for a bit-part, he will make a difference still!
July 20, 201411 yr Lots of places starting to suggest this is happening now, can't say I think it's a move forward but will welcome back The King all the same.
July 20, 201411 yr Lots of places starting to suggest this is happening now, can't say I think it's a move forward but will welcome back The King all the same. After a few years away I would have taken Zola back, even at 38 or 39, if he had wanted to come back. Even for a few short cameos. Didier I will be just as happy to see back.
