January 7, 201511 yr Celery1989, I was going to ask you lot how you would view the Bony transfer from an opposing rivals perspective? I'm not sure what to make of him, He's good but how good is he? Is he Drogba/Dzeko good ? in which case it's a bit pointless, Or is he someone who will start when Aguero is rested and do more than prat around the pitch unlike Dzeko.
January 7, 201511 yr Well, Bony's in my "Sun" fantasy team and I'm leading our local league. So, personally, I hope he plays, and if he's going to score, he does it instead of Lampard ;)
January 7, 201511 yr I presume he will be to dzeko what jovetic is to aguero, the standby. He isn't at the same level as dzeko in my opinion, so he's basically 3rd choice at best.
January 7, 201511 yr Bony is a weird one... He's scored quite a lot since joining Swansea but he doesn't really dominate games. I can't tell if he's just in a good run of form like when Benteke first joined Villa or if he is genuinely a very good striker. Not sure I'd want to be spending £30m on him, don't think he's good enough to be a main striker at a title chasing club and for that kind of money isn't that what you'd want to be getting?
January 7, 201511 yr I think he's a useful enough player, big lump of a guy and he scores plenty. He has an unbelievable understanding with Siggy who gets the most out of him. If he gels with Silva he could get even better...
January 7, 201511 yr I think he's a useful enough player, big lump of a guy and he scores plenty. Sounds like Ba.
January 7, 201511 yr Gerrard remains on the back pages this morning, although I'm happy it took the attention away from our game on the day of his announcement it's going to be a long 5/6 months of gushing, mourning, flashbacks, arse-licking crap. This guy has done absolutely nothing at International level and since he's been in his 'prime' (i.e. had an actual influence on the game, so you can’t really count that treble Liverpool won years previously) he's won the CL (albeit impressive achievement), a Carling Cup and an FA Cup… Not exactly world beating is it? Are we solely praising him for his loyalty? Because his achievements on the pitch do not compare to other midfielders in the league who aren’t nearly as worshipped by the media and pundits alike as he is. Yes yes yes the CL was huge but also extremely lucky, a team won’t throw away a 3-0 lead in a final again, ever. And yeeeesssss I know our win was also tinged with luck but that’s not the point here.I also like how he has tried to turn the blame onto Liverpool by saying if they had offered him a contract in the Summer he would have stayed. Is that how it works? A player decides where and when he wants an offer and if it’s not forthcoming he decides to leave? How arrogant can you get? In the club’s defence they didn’t know in the Summer if his form this season would warrant a huge contract, especially with his age, or the role he would play and when you’re on his wages I guess you have to be certain at what he contributes – not because he is Saint Stevens of Scouseville. It just stinks; his attitude in all of this, the interview he gave etc is just a way to defect any negativity towards him. That said, his ability to get away with a crime that he committed which was clear as day on CCTV was impressive and quite an achievement.
January 7, 201511 yr I am bemused by the aura around Gerrard. In the last decade he has captained Liverpool to 2 trophies (a League Cup in 2012 and the FA Cup in 2006). In contrast, our own John Terry has in the past decade captained Chelsea to 8 domestic trophies never mind the club's success in Europe. Gerrard was awarded a MBE in 2007, for what I'm not quite sure. At that time he'd appeared 63 times for England and scored 12 goals - in comparison Alan Shearer scored 30 goals for England in the same number of appearances. But there was no MBE for Shearer. We all know about the GBH business but that hasn't tarnished him, he is still lionised by the media. I don't get why Gerrard, of that crop of English players gets so much adulation compared to others. Now the spotlight is turned on Liverpool FC for not offering him a new contract before the season began and without doubt this will put Rodgers under more pressure. Is that what Gerrard intends I wonder?
January 7, 201511 yr Gerrard's career is underrated on these boards but the love in by the media has been too much. Lampard played more Premier League games, scored more goals won more trophies than Gerrard, yet when it was announced he was leaving for the MLS (with no hint of him coming back at the time), there was nothing like this.
January 7, 201511 yr The only thing that is sad about Gerrard leaving is I'm starting to feel old. I remember when he came through at Liverpool, same with our own JT and United's youngters of Beckham, Neville etc.
January 7, 201511 yr He's every football fans favourite opposing team player Gem, What are you on about?
January 7, 201511 yr Amazing to see Gerrard once again talking about why he`s leaving, considering he came out and said he was leaving so early because he didn't want it to cause a problem for the clubs season. Self serving egomaniac spitting his dummy out now and making sure everyone knows its not his fault, pretty much what his done all his career.
January 7, 201511 yr Gerrard is an over-rated scouse c*nt, a nauseating whiny turd. I've seen Gerrard win the league. Wait, that was just a bad dream.
January 7, 201511 yr City will probably recoup that money with the sales of negredo and dzeko in the summer. If there's any truth to that i'd hope we'd make an offer for Dzeko. Can't see him leaving though myself. Edited January 7, 201511 yr by the special one
January 7, 201511 yr If there's any truth to that i'd hope we'd make an offer for Dzeko. Can't see him leaving though myself. Last season i wouldn't have mind if we had him but we have 3 better strikers than him here already. Plus he is having an awful season, 2 goals in 18 games. I'm not surprised City are signing Bony, Jovetic and Dzeko have massively underperformed.
January 7, 201511 yr http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30716222 ^ Looks like Victor Valdes has signed with Man Utd. Presumably he will be second choice to De Gea although van Gaal now has the benefit of two quite different skillsets to call upon. Certainly it seems like more or less the end for Lindegaard at Man Utd.

I'm not surprised City are signing Bony, Jovetic and Dzeko have massively underperformed. I agree up until his recent injury he has somewhat underperformed this season - but I just think he'd be a good signing for us for next season... assuming Drogs hangs up his boots and we start next season with Diego Costa/Remy/Bamford I can see us lacking an aerial threat which Dzeko would give us. That said even if City decide to sell, I don't think they'd sell to us unless we're happy to pay over the odds. Either way, I still think he'll be at City next season (I don't think Pellegrini will forget what a key player he was for them last season). Edited January 7, 201511 yr by the special one
January 7, 201511 yr £30m is criminally over-paying and I'd say the same if he was signing for us. A good player to sign, but that's too much for him.
January 7, 201511 yr RichardCFC, You say that but then when Berahino and Charlie Austin are being priced up at £25 million because of their nationalities, Bony at £30 in the modern game doesn't look too bad, The only reason it's a bit of a head scratcher and this is something you might agree with me on is, He clearly won't start ahead of Aguero so in essence we are paying £30 million for a 2nd choice striker, That's where I think the doubting of the price tag is coming in. If Spurs or Liverpool paid £30 million for him right now, We'd all say that's about the right price considering he will be their main man.

But yeah, paying £30m for a second choice striker seems so much, especially as his ratio of less than a goal every two games isn't that great. Strikers who have a good one or two seasons often fade away as well, such as Benteke, Michu, Jelavic etc.

Now the spotlight is turned on Liverpool FC for not offering him a new contract before the season began and without doubt this will put Rodgers under more pressure. Is that what Gerrard intends I wonder? There's a huge difference between Gerrard and the likes of Terry & Lampard. Gerrard has dragged LFC along for too many years virtually single handedly, playing alongside some truly crap players. You name your worst Chelsea midfielder and I'll raise and beat you by an Igor Biscam every time. A footballing donkey if ever there was one. Terry & Lampard have featured in squads that have been packed with quality. Gerrard has been involved in squads that have been packed with at averageness, tinged with a little bit of quality, and that is not decrying the achievements or qualities of T & L in the slightest. The club are also about to lose the biggest shirt seller that they've got. A pretty crucial thing these days. The whole thing stinks to me, and as far as I'm concerned is a power issue. It might well be that Gerrard is turning the heat up for Rodgers by making the announcement now, but he's brought it on himself. As the thread on this forum shows, he has plenty to say for himself, and at times it's a bit embarrassing. I'm disappointed that Rodgers didn't do what he said be would be considering doing, and trying Gerrard out in defence. Our defence seems in permanent disarray and he could only have improved it. A ball playing centre-half is a massive asset to a team. He'd also be there for any penalties. Gerrard was not happy about being left out of the Team in the Bernabeu, and it's gone downhill from there. I think this is something that might backfire on Rodgers and the owners unless they invest in some genuine quality, and then we're back to the old chestnuts. Are Rodgers/Liverpool able to attract the kind of players that we actually need, and given what he's spent to date in his time at Liverpool is Rodgers, or the transfer committee, or the cleaner, or whoever is actually involved in the transfer dealings able to even identify those players. It's going to be interesting, but not in the kind of way that I'd like it to be.
