Thibaut Courtois

I disagree.  I think that is like saying a team that wins the league with Drogba is most likely to win the league with Remy

The basic notion there is right. Only that (in my view) the difference magnifies as you go further up the pitch.

Seaman was a top notch keeper, one of the best in the premier league ever. Valdez wasn't even playing with a great defence, there defence was average but the team was so good they had 90% possession most of the time.

A top notch goalie is worth at least 10 more points, a decent one isn't. Your fighting a worthless point.

Its worthless to you maybe but its a totally valid point. Goalies at top teams are not worth anywhere near 10 points a season, maybe 3-4 points.

Barcelona defense was top class. Not Terry and Carvalho level but top class none the less. To say that the likes of Thuram, Abidal, Puyol, Zambrotta, Maxwell, Alves, Alba and recently Pique were average is quite naff.

Maybe I dont rate seaman fairly. I only have memories of later days in his career (so much so that I wasnt even able to recall his name till you mentioned). The ronaldinho freekick and his last couple of seasons at arsenal which were poor.

Look at what United managed to achieve with Barthez. A perfectly average keeper behind a great defense.

I didn't want to come across as abit of a t*** but I do rate Seaman and he was top draw. He played with a great defence but he was known as a part of the famous back 5. Every keeper makes mistakes and in the later years of Cech at Chelsea he made more mistakes than usual.

I guess we just see a difference in the importance of a keeper but I just have to look how hard Arsenal have taken to find a world class replacement for Seaman. I wouldn't know without going through each game but I bet Lloris and Schmeichel have gained there respective teams points in the title battle this season.

Again, same goes for difficulty in replacing the likes of Campbell, Kewon, Cole and Toure. Who is to say that Schezney wont have won a title behind arsenal defense of 2002-2004.

Spurs and Leicester are not top teams in general. At top teams the keepers make a difference for maybe 1 or 2 games a season.

If your keeper is making a difference of 10 points youre likely not a top team like united las 3-4 years. Or spurs since lloris joined them.

szczesny might of won the title but I bet they wouldn't of been undefeated.

Spurs and Leicester are the top 2 teams this season. I bet there fans can look over there teams individual seasons and find instances where there keepers have saved them a number of points. Always happens and always will. Leicester have lost 3 games, Spurs 4 that is because of a good defence and keeper.

Your very wrong on this and in the minority, since the prem started pundits have been saying you need a keeper who can make the difference and every team has had that who has won the league from Schmeichel,, Seaman, Flowers, Hart, Courtois. Lehman, Schmeichel Junior, Van der Sar

A truly great keeper makes a back 4 and a goalkeeper become a back 5. They control from the back, moving a defence up the pitch, deeper when needed etc.

If he leaves, then we are doomed,Unless we but Neuer or De gea, there is no keeper better than him.

Apart from Degea and Neuer, no keeper better than Courtois? Are you just kidding?

I agree it is nonsense that we are doomed if Courtois leaves however the idea that they only come into play if the defence fails is far too simplistic. A top quality goalkeeper is worth a sh*t loads of points to a team every season and the quality of the defence is, to some extent, down to the confidence they have in the keeper behind them. A back ljne that isn't confident in their goalkeepr makes more mistakes as they don't have the confidence in how that goalkeeper organises them or that they will be dominant at set pieces or when the ball is crossed into the box. As soon as a back line lacks confidence in the goalkeeper they make rash mistakes.

Good point.

Ter Stegen would be a good replacement if Barcelona wants him and he wants out.

Barthez average keeper - won champions league with Marseille, won World Cup and euros, his a terribly average keeper haha.

Looking at Barca's defence, Pique couldn't cut it in the prem which is the hardest league in the world. All those players are good and was in Barca's defence at some point but all I have to say is if Mascherano and Pique can be your number one CB pairing then your not winning the league because of that.

The whole point on Barca is that Barca and Real have run that league for ages now, it's a totally different league to the prem. How often do you see 8-0s in the prem, it's every week in Spain and players scoring 6 in a game.

Barca literally hardly have to defend as they have 90% possession. When do Barca have to go to Stoke at -5 on a December evening in the rain with them launching balls to Crouch?

Dont think there is much point arguing this. I think I am right and you keep going on tangents.

In my view the difference between a courtois and a begovic in a title winning team would be less than 5 points.

There have been plenty of average keepers who have demonstrated this lehman, barthez, hart to point to a few.

I think you're criminally underrating those three goalkeepers.

No I am not. My ranking of keepers has 3 levels.

Good keepers - Cech, Neuer, Courtois, Van der Sar, Lloris, Kahn

Average Keepers - Barthez, Cudicini, Forster, Lehman, Begovic, Hart

sh*t keepers - Mignolet, Gomez, Green, Howard, Enkelman

I dont care for finer margins as they rarely make a difference to good teams.

fine margins often are the difference between winning and losing.

leaving aside a description of the likes of hart and cudicini as average,

just think of the difference between begovic and courtois;

the latter is quicker and positions himself higher up the pitch- this allows for slower central defenders to play higher up (and the end consequence is the striker gets to play closer to the opposition goal).

he is better with his feet so is a better option for the defenders to keep the ball (i.e. they trust him to receive it and circulate possession)

he is far better at claiming crosses and set pieces- this cuts out chances before they become chances.

he is better at releasing the ball after claiming it so we would have more chances to counter attack.

all of these things hugely benefit the team in a cumulative way. just because you can't quantify them with 'points won' doesn't mean it isn't important.

goalkeeping is about far more than shot stopping, which in any case he's better than begovic at.

I have never had any contact with PSG. I have played a lot against PSG recently - twice last season, again this season in a friendly and twice more in the Champions League this year. They are a good club who win their league easily."

"Me, I like playing in England. Paris is a very good club but I am happy at Chelsea."

"I have a contract for three years, so I will say 100 per cent [i'm staying at Chelsea]. Rumours affect any club where things are going badly. People think the top players want to leave because they are not in the Champions League."

But his girlfriend is a Madridite and he forced Cech out by being the future and he said that there is more competition in training with the Belgium squad as they are all top quality and Chelsea often train with the youth. He must surely want to leave, this is all lies it must be taken out of context  .

"Everyone knows it is our fault we will not play in that competition next year. It has happened to Manchester United and to Dortmund, to not play in the Champions League, and it is heartbreaking. This year, we have not defended our title well like we needed to. We must regather our forces to return stronger and get back to the Champions League."

You have very high standards if the best keepers in recent history are merely good.

I think you may also be confused on what the words average and sh*t mean

Or maybe you should have better standards mate.

Anyways, he is staying to thats the end of that.

Surprise, surprise he's called out the newspapers on their rubbish and said he wants to be here next season.

Hopefully that stops the absolute nonsense posters are putting on here.
