April 18, 201610 yr This makes it sound like Cech leaving for Courtois was a bad thing? Cech wasn't great in recent years and often watched shots go past him. Sentiment aside Courtois coming in and Cech leaving was a great thing for this club. Your spot on and i have said this before. The years before Courtois was number one Cechs form was defiantly deteriorating, his still a top class keeper but more mistakes was creeping in. If you have the option of having Courtois who was basically free after all the loan fess Madrid paid you take him. If Courtois let that goal in yesterday Cech did this thread would be going mad.
April 18, 201610 yr ...Cechs form was defiantly deteriorating... People kept telling him he could still be the best, but he said: "f**k that, I'll get worse if I want to!"

Sadly, you are right.
April 20, 201610 yr If Courtois let that goal in yesterday Cech did this thread would be going mad. I think Thibaut has given himself less room for forgiveness because of the way he demanded that he play over Cech (not merely compete for the spot). When you do that to a club legend and one of the greatest PL goalkeepers of his era, the fans have reason to not forgive you as readily for mistakes. His comments in recent times haven't helped in that regard either.

April 20, 201610 yr all of it. your claim that he demanded to play over cech, that he wasn't willing to merely compete for a spot and the idea that this is something he did to petr cech. it is entirely a work of fiction constructed to attack him.
April 21, 201610 yr "Castles, often well-sourced with Mourinho stories, claims that Lollichon not only rubbed our former manager the wrong way, even to the point of getting "excluded from some [staff] meetings" for supposedly leaking inside information to the press, but that Courtois himself isn't particularly enamored with the Frenchman's coaching methods. The report certainly insinuates that Courtois's meniscus injury should be blamed on the coach as well, for pushing his young charge beyond the point that he should have." Is this 'we've had a rough season' chatter or is every move we made blowing up in our face?
April 30, 201610 yr Lots of papers today saying that Conte is happy for Courtois to go. Fair enough imho. Not prepared to slum it for a season with no european football, not interested in working to get Chelsea back to the top of the game in England? He could leave today for all i care.
April 30, 201610 yr If he wants to leave and we get a massive fee then it probably makes sense. Make no mistake though, this would be the first time under Roman Abramovich that this club has sold a player who would be part of the first team and has the potential to be the best in the world. Robben might be comparable but he was very much in and out of the team and suffering from injury niggles in his last season, so it wasn't such a massive loss (at the time). We don't have enough players with the potential to be the best in the world that we can just cash-in but this is where the club probably is at the moment. If I was an outsider I'd suggest Roman's short-termist view was finally coming home to roost.
April 30, 201610 yr I definitely think we should resist any advances but there is a point when you can't say no.For instance let's say we were offered £80m for that money we could bring in Bale and lets say Donnaruma or Butland as Courtois' replacement. Which doesn't overly reduce our potential for a top keeper and whilst we already have a quality keeper in Begovic won't overly reduce the quality already present whilst bolstering our squad with someone who is first class. Yes Bale coming might be unlikely without CL but you get the point I am trying to make.

You overrate him there! And if this persistent reports about Courtois not being happy here is true then i dont mind him leaving for FREE. And i wont miss him. I still miss Cech though!
April 30, 201610 yr I hope we keep all our top players, but if we can replace with Butland/ter Stegen i'm happy to see Tibo go. I don't think AC will let Donnaruma go yet, too soon and the fans would riot. Anyone but Begovic please (well, not anyone but you get the jist). Edited April 30, 201610 yr by the special one
April 30, 201610 yr ter Stegen is about on level with Begovic. We would need to replace Courtois with either Forster, Butland or Navas.
April 30, 201610 yr I like Forster. He's a good keeper and seems like a decent bloke too but I think the level of ambition of this club should be such that we should be looking to acquire and keep the best young players in the world, not sell them. He's also another player in his late-20s that we'd be bringing in which goes against a lot of what we were doing just a couple of years ago. This club seems confused about what it wants to actually do; one season it's all about reducing the age of the squad and signing young players, now it seems like we're signing players approaching their 30s to win now. It seems almost rudderless.
April 30, 201610 yr Forster is 28. He could give us a solid 4 years to find and train the next top young keeper. No point in having a keeper who is still learning his trade when every mistake made in that position has more impact on points than any other position on the field. Also, I think Forster could be bought for about 15-20m. While Butland would cost near about 30m+.
April 30, 201610 yr If he goes I'd like to see us try and get Butland. Or hell, maybe just bring Cech back for a year or 2, get some exerpience and leadership back into the side.

I still miss Cech though! he is right. Courtois is in fact our starting GK. i'm not sure whether he would be the first, but i don't think we have let player that's a regular slip through our fingers. KDB Lukaku Mata etc wasn't starting at the time they were sold. if he goes, it would be a massive loss. and you can't deny that he has the potential to be the best in the world and i think you're being a little biased there. you don't mind him leaving for free if he's unhappy, yet you miss Cech when he clearly stated that he wasn't happy Edited April 30, 201610 yr by magichat
