Watched him with interest last night, really hard to evaluate his performance, on the face of it he was pony. The few touches he had were of a player who looked very rusty, yet again the rest of his teammates bar Cuadrado and a young midfielder they brought on in the second half were really poor. He looked like a player who was hiding a bit, something we used to say about a certain Spaniard, yet again now he has his move he might be making sure he doesn't get injured before he puts pen to paper.. we can hope. If he can rediscover anything like the form he showed at Athletico he will no doubt be a good acquisition, the key word being IF.

Jose's gotta find more game time for Remy and not just when Costa'a out injured

Apparently Remy is looking to move as he's not happy with the minutes he got last season. Signing Falcao or not the chance of him getting more minutes this season coming is 50/50 at best.

So surely signing any new striker will cause Remy to want to leave?

As it looks done I'm now going to move in to the camp that is ignoring his last 18 months and believes we are getting the striker from the you tube clip above.

16!!

Come on otherwise someone will be upset...

Looks inevitable now, seems strange to be hoping a player improves and hits form before we've even signed him.

Anyway I with barak81 I now believe we've just signed one of the best if not best number 9 in the business.  I just need a song for him.

Those that criticise the deal fail to come up other solutions. Can anyone name a third choice who is available for a decent price?

Cavani? £30m

Beneteke? £32m

Kane? Never gonna happen

Lets face it, we all think the club can do better than Falcao but prehaps, they can't. Maybe Falcao isn't first choice but represents a low risk, cheap option.

For a one year loan, its worth a punt. We won't be stuck with him like Torres.

Plus those kind of strikers would be signed to 4-5yr deals. So you'd have that scenario, plus Costa, plus Remy ... what does that leave for Bamford and Solanke then? They may aswell think "ah well, almost got considered for first team" unless we sold one of Costa/Remy or.. loaned someone for 1yr while Bamford gets a 1yr prem loan under his belt.

I am trying ever so hard to get on board with this and can accept some of the logical positive points in relation to the year long loan in the sense that it gives us the flexibility to review the situation of our young promising youth players  in 12 months time without  being financially crippled..... however....

I just can't see this being a success.

We have the rare advantage of already having seeing how he would cope as a back up striker getting cameo appearances in the Premier League, for one of our competitors, and it wasn't pretty. In fact, it was bloody awful to Torres proportions. He was utter sh*t, let's be honest here.

When I watched him last year I just thanked my lucky stars it wasn't us with the 'has been' striker on insane wages getting wheeled out on rare occasions only to fail week in/week out. We have been there.

Problem is, I just don't see him being much, if any, better for us.

If we keep Costa & Remy and simply replace Drogba with Falcao then we are arguably better off than last season. Combined with the fact we can let him go after a year then it's not going to cause us any long lasting damage....

I still just can't help but think we would be better off letting this one go..... exactly as United have.

In pretty sure that was debunked recently

Pretty much sums up my feelings, great post.

IF we keep Remy it might not be a disaster but I can see Remy wanting to leave if Falcao is going to take opportunities away from him when Costa needs rested/injured.

look on the bright side, him & Caudrado will be able to keep each other good company on the bench,

in training, on buses and airplanes talking about their glory days and laughing at the silly wages they are trousering

for not playing, scoring or contributing to the success of the team in any way whatsoever

they were both so great in the Copa yesterday- devastatingly average, looks like Colombia will be leaving early now so that's another plus for next season

they wont miss so much of Chelseas's pre season, so will be available to warm the bench even sooner !!

Does this mean the end of Remy at Chelsea? Does he want another season behind Costa and possibly behind Falcao as well. Thing is Falcao is a high profile player with bloated salary who might get the nod before Remy who is not. Jose typically doesn't operate like that but at Chelsea anything is possible if Roman happens to be a fan of Falcao.

Richard Keys ?@richardajkeys Jun 14

Falcao to Chelsea should be confirmed in the next 24 hours. 1 year loan - with an option to buy.

Ah Keysy

Funny you mention Richard Keys. Yesterday on the BEin Sport Copa America show, he is the MC with his sidekicks Gary Bailey, Andy Gray & Christian Vieri. Bailey was going on how Falcao wasn't doing the business @ Yanited when Keys comes in & says, "maybe Falcao would perform better at a Bigger Club" (insinutating that Chelsea is bigger than manu) at that moment in time, Bailey's face glows bright red & everyone on the set begins to laugh. I laughed too.

Gab marcotti made a good point that maybe Falcao should have more ambition than sitting on the bench at Chelsea. He probably needs lots of game time to get to his best achievable level. He likely won't get it at Chelsea.

On the other hand if costa goes out early in season due to hammy Falcao could be playing every week.

Tough call this one. Has he really lost pace?

^ The ambition bit is what puzzles me; UTD bought him as a starter to pair with RVP and he actually started 14 games in the PL. It was when they figured he couldn't do the business he was dropped and ended up playing in their U21. You would think he would go to a league he was comfortable with I.e the Spanish league, maybe a Sevilla/Bilbao; a mid-table club where he would be a starter, but he is coming back to a physically tough league to play backup. Makes no sense at all.

Both my gut feeling and history tells me that signing Falcao will be a bad move.

Ageing striker, past his best - what are we hoping for - third time lucky rather than a repeat of the Sheva & Torres fiasco's?

I've heard some pundits say he could still come good and do a job for us but I would much rather we used our extensive scouting network to uncover an up & coming gem and NOT some old pro who everyone knows everything about and the signs are he's past it. I want to be excited about our new signings not sigh and think here we go again.

Hope I'm proved well and truly wrong.

We have gems in Bamford, Solanke and Abraham. You could even include Traore in that who I don't include for some weird reason despite him being perhaps the most talented. That's four great young talents aged 21, 19, 18 and 18 (I think).

Again, what is the opportunity cost (as barak said) of this signing? Who is the player we're not buying?

Is it Mandzukic? Is it Tevez? Is it 'Kezman like player' with his luscious locks and cheeky smile?

Ok let's say it is that player. Let's just say that we once again sign PSV's free-scoring prospect....well actually his name is Memphis and he's costing United £25 million but let's just pretend that he's not, that he's £5 million. What is the opportunity cost of signing that player? Is it perhaps the development or integration of a youngster 12 months from now? That's a possibility.

Falcao will not be as bad a deal as Torres or Shevchenko. The problem with their deals wasn't that they were so bad in their first season, it's that we had to keep them for a second. We don't have that with Falcao. The initial outlay may be steeper than any of us would like but the rest of the deal is upside.

Spot on.

It just seems a horrible deal which is very likely to blow up in our faces.....again.

However, according to L'Equipe, Chelsea have agreed terms with Monaco and will take Falcao on loan for the season.

The one-year deal will set the Blues back around £7m, with it also containing a buyout clause of over £35m.

Both parties have reportedly agreed on all terms of the deal and the transfer is likely to be announced before the end of the week.

He might not be as bad a deal as Sheva and Torres cost wise but he could be as much of a disaster performance wise.

Truth is, I just don't want another stop-gap striker. We've had Eto and Drogba and for me Falcao will just be another striker living on past reputation to plug the gap again. I thought we were building for the future? If we could have got him when he was at his peak at Madrid and pre-injury yes, but for me that time has past and I don't want Chelsea being his 5th club in 4 years.
