Petr Cech to Arsenal

Featured Replies

Is it a pittance though? It makes him probably the 6th or 7th most expensive keeper ever at the age of 33. I know some people have this opinion that keepers can go on to 40 but that's the exception rather than the rule at the top level.

Watford is below his standard as well. It's one thing to say you respect a legend but to then say but we'd like you to go to this sh*tty little club who aren't in the Champions League and can't afford your wages...why even pretend like you're going to treat him fairly? Why have this edifice and then put conditions on it?

And the club's interest last year was to move from Cech to Courtois. Is there a single thing Cech could've done more to ease that transition? Did he say a single notable word to the press? Was there a single dirty look in the direction of Courtois? When called upon was he anything less than exemplary?

I don't like the move either but I love the man and to me it's more important to act with dignity in this instance. I'm not trying to have a pop because I generally agree with most of the things you post but I do feel strongly about this.

Honestly, there's more to football than trophies sometimes. Football is about people, the blokes you watch the game with and the blokes who serve this club and I think sometimes you have to do what's best by your most loyal servants rather than simply look at them in terms of how many points they give their new team.

And IF we don't win the league next season then that's OUR fault.

The Watford loan was a little tongue in cheek. I do agree that it will be our fault if we don't win the league next season, but by cech going to arsenal, it would make it more difficult for us.

I agree cech has been a top servant and the ultimate professional, but I still wouldn't sell him directly to a rival unless we got an offer too good to refuse, which I don't think 10m is.

Would arsenal have ever sold us henry when he was 30/31, even though they had a replacement in van persie? I highly doubt it.

Look we will never see eye to eye over this. Neither of our opinions will waiver. So I think the best thing to do, is hope fsw pulls his finger out of his fat arse and make cech an offer he can't refuse!

Henry was still very much in their plans though whereas we replaced Cech.

I would honestly love him to stay, but that's unworkable for a few reasons chief amongst them is he's a winner. As I said above, I'd be fine with him going to United because I don't think it strengthens them. Arsenal is the worst case scenario and it makes them a better team (I think....Cech did get a bit flappy last year) but there are certain times when the club's interest is secondary to one of it's most loyal servants.

Cech is more than just a keeper, more than just 10 extra points for Arsenal and more than a stat on a balance sheet. Roman obviously feels the same and it's actually quite heartwarming seeing us taking this stance with him. Modern sport is so commercialised, so much about the bottom line that sometimes we forget that it's at it's heart mates kicking a ball around.

Anyway....

Good points.

We are no doubt shooting ourselves in the foot with this one.

The club must always come first.

I would rather keep him in reserves and pay his wages than give him to Arsenal.

What a silly decision that would be. I really hope Jose doesn't persist with this, it will strengthen Arsenal a lot, why would we want to hurt our chances at the title? For the sake of 10 million is not worth it. We really should try and get him abroad or not at all.

Absolutely bang on.

I really hope this is bullsh*t. The club has to come before the player no matter what surely. It will be an insult to the fans to sell him to them. You don't make improvements on your team and help make other teams better at the same time.

I would rather we let Cech's contract run down than sell him to them for £10 million.

We must be the only club around right now that has their legends or best players leave for direct rivals. It's crazy.

Sell Cech for 10 mil and bring in Falcao for more than twice that.

If true, it's nice to see that we've reverted to our business model of the early Roman days.

Jose has already made it clear he doesn't want Cech to go anywhere, especially not to another Premier League team, but also that it's not up to him to make this choice. Cech has handled himself with dignity and class upon losing his place in the 1st team without doing much wrong, and perhaps this is Roman's way of reciprocating that and all he's done for us in the last decade. You could argue that there's no place for sentimentality in football, but would you rather this turn ugly and mar our relationship with one of our legends? And then what? He leaves on a free to Arsenal next year? Because he wouldn't owe us anything if we force him to stay against his wishes. Our hope right now should be that Cech understands how the fans feel about Arsenal and decides he doesn't want to go to them, not us strong-arming him into making a decision. The aim of the club should be to find as many alternative options for him as we can, but if he wants to stay in London and play in the Champions League, there's nothing we can do.

As for the people moaning about the price, he has only one year left on his contract. 10m for a 33 year-old back-up GK who wants to leave and is on the last year of his contract isn't exactly a pittance, no matter how much he means to us. We have very little leverage here.

I would hate this as much as the rest of you'll with how obnoxious Arsenal and their fans can be, but if Petr Cech helps an Arsenal side managed by Arsene Wenger overtake us to the title, we have serious issues of our own.

Being a club legend works two ways. He shouldn't want to go to a rival, and if he doesn't give a toss about helping one of our rivals beat us then that puts an asterix next to his achievements here, as with Frank.

I appreciate people saying we should show him respect etc. But ffs it's hardly like he's been a slave to the club. We've paid him 100k a week for 10 years. Perhaps it should be him showing the club and fans some respect?

I swear we're the only top club that sells to direct rivals. Mata lampard was bad enough but this would take arsenal to the next level. Id rather keep him at the for 10m. Not happy at all.

If the club decides it's okay to sell him to a direct rival, that's not Cech's problem, is it? He wants to play every week, for a club in the CL, and he wants to stay in London. He's not going to uproot his family to please Chelsea supporters. This has nothing to do with him having to show the club and its supporters respect. He did a terrific job for us, he got well paid for it in money and applause, he owes us nothing if he wants to leave and if the club lets him go. For him, it's just a job, same as we view our jobs.

It will be horrible to see him doing well for Arsenal, but Chelsea winning prizes is up to Chelsea.

Sorry but neither Frank not Pete have or would have asterisks next to their name. That's just not true. Frank is still loved by the fans,so will Pete.

Well I hope Cortouis proves to be worth it if true.

He's the second or third best keeper in world football and he's still exceedingly young. I think he's got as good a shot as anyone.

Exactly ::clap2::

Were definitely not the only team that sells to rivals, arsenal have sold their best player for years.
