What TV Show Are You Waarching?

IMDB have rated "Chernobyl" the greatest TV show ever. Even better than Breaking Bad.

Having watched the whole series I think they may be right. The only reason I can't totally accept their view is that "Chernobyl" is only 5 episodes long.

It is a truly great piece of TV and I can't recommend it highly enough.

It is riveting television. Made for uncomfortable viewing some times, but wow, just really stellar writing and acting throughout. I guess it is easier to maintain those standards when it's only over the course of five episodes. Perfect length.

Well it’s not like they could string it out with plot twists or anything and the ending was pretty much a dead cert

It was a great show, I actually looked forward to Tuesday 9pm for five weeks!

Fukushima sequel?

I was hooked from the beginning and also couldn't wait for the next episode. Jared Harris will surely win awards for his performance. Didn't realise he was Richard's son.

2 Matt Berry shows which are both superb:-

Year of the rabbit, Victorian England sweary, violent London copper

What we do in the Shadows - modern vampires in New york, tv series based on the film.

I've just finished watching the first season of Mayans MC on BBC iPlayer. A Sons Of Anarchy spin-off,  I thought it was excellent.

Season 2 is due to air sometime this year, so I hear.

I've been watching an Italian series My Brilliant Friend and really liked it. Some very good acting from the two young girls playing the leads.

The Virtues was pretty decent.

Written by Shane Meadows, the guy who made This is England.

Decent is an understatement. That was f**king brilliant. Everything from the acting (Stephen Graham is so good you can even forgive the scouse accent), writing to the soundtrack.

The Guardian did a good interview with Shane Meadows where he talks about his own repressed experiences of sexual abuse as a child, which served as the inspiration for this series:

I love Shane Meadows stuff and also fan of Stephen Graham but must admit I watched first episode and found it pretty depressing so didn't watch any more. Will perhaps have to go back to it and watch the rest. Did it remain pretty bleak? I like gritty but after a bad day at work you sometimes need something to cheer the mood up a bit!!

It's not all bleak, I think the first episode was pretty relentless in that it shows his life pretty much falling apart, but there are some really funny and touching moments too when he arrives back at his hometown in Ireland. I like this even more than This Is England (which was also great) and most of his films with the exception of Dead Man's Shoes, which blew me away.

250 years ago, Edinburgh launched a competition to design a 'New Town' for the Scottish capital. The city desperately needed an upgrade - it was overcrowded, filthy and crumbling. With Scotland a partner in the new United Kingdom, it needed a capital to be proud of. At the same time, Edinburgh was seen as the intellectual capital of Europe - with Adam Smith, David Hume and other figures of the 'Scottish Enlightenment' creating an explosion of creative ideas that would change the world. The winning plan by James Craig was a masterpiece of Georgian city planning that reflected these Enlightenment ideas. This film tells the story of how the plan was made real - becoming the most ambitious building project in Britain, and transforming Edinburgh into the most perfect Georgian city on earth.

Thanks for posting, sounds interesting. I'll watch it. As you say, the likes of Smith and Hume came out with incredible ideas and philosophies. There is a series starting on BBC 4 tomorrow night about the clash between Charles I and Parliament and the eventual Civil War. Am surprised though that it starts with events in 1641 given that there had been clashes between Charles and the Parliaments and Churches in England and Scotland in the 1620s and 1630s. I guess that with any historical drama or documentary it is difficult to know when to start. It could be argued that the problems in the reign of Charles I were a consequence of what happened in the reign of his father, James I of England (James VI of Scotland) and even going back to the break with Rome in the 1530s and the subsequent growth in the power of Parliament. Interesting times the 16th and 17th centuries. What I didn't know was the vote in Parliament about the Grand Remonstrance was 52% to 48%. The same figures as the Brexit vote. History repeating itself!

Cheers mate for the heads up. I've had family living in Edinburgh since I was a kid and spent many holidays there when I was younger.

The city, has always fascinated me. Still does in fact.

Have been to Edinburgh a few times over the years. As you say, a fascinating place. Would often go there when visiting family in Larkhall not far from Glasgow. Some brilliant buildings in Edinburgh. Also some wonderful whisky shops. Have you visited the Writers Museum? Dedicated to Burns, Scott and Stevenson. Worth visiting if you haven't been.

I'll take your word on the Whisky Shops. I've never liked the taste of Whisky.  And have to admit not having visited the Writers Museum either.

The National Museum of Scotland is always worth a visit.

I watched the programme last night and had forgotten just how crowded and relatively small the size of the 'Old Town' of Edinburgh.

This was before  the old City walls were knocked down to allow the expansion and the New Town to emerge..

It is well worth watching.  I wish I still had Season 8 of GOT to look forward to!

I finished watching Years and Years last night and I enjoyed it a lot. If Black Mirror made a soap opera it would turn out something like this. It's fun to guess who some of the characters are inspired by; I'd say Vivienne Rook was a cross between Farage and Le Pen, and the idiot politician with the spinning bow tie at the end is so obviously a tribute to Boris Johnson.

I'm a year behind the times but have to say that Ash vs. Evil Dead is definitely one of my all-time favourites. Shame there won't be any more.

I can recommend some nice Netflix animated series:
Castlevania
The Dragon Prince

Both have a nice storyline and cool characters.
