July 14, 201511 yr That makes one of you. Even Bates admitted that that was one of his biggest mistakes. It was a shocking decision. I think you can see looking back that the team was getting older and he wasn't the righto move the team on unfortunately so that part is in hindsight. I was absolutely gutted when he left though but even at the time we were playing awful and it did make me think that maybe a change was needed but I never warmed to Ranieri.

They aren't hanging around this summer are they. Just buying everyone they can.
July 14, 201511 yr While it's only a rumour, in all fairness I would argue that swapping out di Maria for Gaitan is quite a serious downgrade. Di Maria is good enough to be one of the five best players in the world, Man Utd shouldn't waste the opportunity, even if he had an indifferent first season, he's probably worth the gamble.
July 14, 201511 yr They are indeed doing very good business. Unlike us Well, it's our rivals who are the ones that need to stengthen their teams more, obviously they are going to be more active in the window than us. We don't need a massive overhaul, just a few tweaks here and there.

We don't need a massive overhaul, just a few tweaks here and there. We don't need an overhaul, that's correct, but we do need strengthening. Especially our attacking midfield needs a big name player. As i said somewhere else on this forum, i was getting used to Mourinho identifying our weak spots and buying the players he wants/needs pretty much immediately after the window opened and getting them into the squad as soon as possible. The more time they have together in pre-season, the better. And since our pre-season is days away from starting, i was hoping we would've done our important business by then.

They aren't hanging around this summer are they. Just buying everyone they can. It's just the Telegraph (who are unreliable themselves) quoting the Metro (who I don't think have ever got a rumour right).... There is a chance we might get Gaitan, but I'd wait until a vaguely reputable source comes out with it. I really hope we do not though as he would be an ok squad player but a terrible replacement if Di Maria were to leave. Hopefully he stays, as I feel he will be brilliant this year. Had the second highest number of assists in the league last year despite supposedly being a flop. Everyone seems to forget that in the first month or so, everyone was saying that he was easily worth the money and that it was a great buy, etc. A few injuries and some personal problems later, he was being called useless.
July 14, 201511 yr I still think ADM could prove to be a great signing for United. He's got all the technical attributes to be an excellent, PL winger. The question is whether he'll be able to settle into English culture. IIRC he and his family have struggled to acclimatise to living in Manchester thus far. Gaitan makes no real sense to me unless someone is leaving - they've already got ADM, Young, Depay, Mata, Januzaj for those positions and it looks like they will be playing 3 in midfield given how many players they have there.
July 14, 201511 yr Apparently Arsenal won't be signing anyone else this season. Cech won't be enough for them to win the league. When will Wenger learn?
July 14, 201511 yr They are indeed doing very good business. They need to to make up that 17 point gap.
July 14, 201511 yr Apparently Arsenal won't be signing anyone else this season. Cech won't be enough for them to win the league. When will Wenger learn? Never. But we'll get the same old same old this year anyway. They'll start poorly leading to protests about the board and the manager, but then they'll finish decently in 3rd or 4th with the FA cup if they're lucky, then they'll love him again and proudly declare that this is the summer they go big in the market to push on. Lather, rinse, repeat

July 14, 201511 yr impossible to believe arsenal won't sign anyone. i reckon they'll get someone like lacazette, but they must have funds to purchase in other areas. i mean they've only spent 11 million on a gk and that's it. i refuse to believe that arsenal are that stupid. last season they couldn't keep all their players fit, so they need more depth. however, maybe their plan is to buy one big name every summer; last season it was sanchez, this season lacazette, just to keep the fans off the board's backs. July 14, 201511 yr That's alot of faith they're putting in Coquelin. If he gets injured it's back to Flamini/Arteta. Surprised they didn't even bid for Schneiderlin.
July 14, 201511 yr So glad we didn't get him in the end just don't think he's worth 49 million Edited July 14, 201511 yr by Bluerising
July 14, 201511 yr Most expensive English player ever. Considering the quality England have had in the last decade or so, the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Owen, Rooney, etc... And it's Raheem Sterling who is the most expensive...ever.
July 14, 201511 yr bluemoon is massively overreacting. Apparently it's the "best signing since Kun"...
July 14, 201511 yr Veron started brilliantly too. He's unsuited to England, simple as. I don't buy this argument. It might have been the case 10-20 years ago, but the premier league is full of small, diminutive or not particularly strong players who have excelled. Just look at Mata, Silva or Carzorla. Hazard is a small player who was known for going down a lot (though mostly because was also fouled a lot too) before he came to England. Di Maria has everything to make it here, it's just that last season he had a lot go against him at crucial points. Then when he came back he was not the player he was at the start. I would at least keep him for another season. The money is just not worth it.

Yes you bought him for about £20m more than that but the way Utd are chucking money about under Van Gaal, it hardly matters. You'll never get a better offer.

He had very little pressure also, he was still over praised by the likes of Phil terrible haircut Neville just for running about a bit. When Torres was the biggest signing it was much more of an issue, if he made a bad pass he was headlining most of the papers for it.

If there isn't any of those big name players available in attacking midfield then there isn't much we can do. We may see names like Isco and Gotze flying around but that doesn't actually mean we have any chance of signing them. I doubt Real Madrid want to sell Isco and i doubt he even wants to leave them and the same could be said for Gotze too, Bayern aren't about to sell another one of their German midfielders after selling Schweinsteiger. I am fine with us giving Oscar another season anyway. He's had time to get himself mentally prepared for a new season for once and will have a proper pre season with us for the first time since he joined. We can all see that Oscar has something about him and when he plays well, the team plays well. It's all about getting him to be more consistent. This season may be that season where he really kicks on.
