I'm not sure how to word this, so it's probably going to sound stupid, but:

When I think of the idea of a long-term manager, someone here for say, 8-10 years, the key factor in that for me isn't just the success it may or may not bring (although it's obviously a nice bonus), but it's about having some identity, having someone I actually like in charge of the club I support.

The favourite players are always ones who stayed with us for a good number of years - the Lampards, Terrys, Drogbas, Zolas, etc... You build up a a liking for them, and you really believe they care about the club as much as you. Players and Managers who come and go, not staying long, you don't feel that connection to.

Ideally this would have been Jose, as you get the impression he does care as much as us, but that's not going to happen now.

But I'd rather just win a couple of things in the next decade and have a football club full of players and a manager that I actually like, that I'm proud to support, than have an endless parade of people every year or 2 and win loads.

And that isn't just about the manager, but I look at the squad now and honestly I just don't feel any real kind of connection with most of our players. In years gone by the squad was full of players most of us really liked - Cech, Terry, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole, Lampard, Drogba, Gudjohnsen, Essien, Ballack, etc... They were leaders on the pitch and they gave everything. Now I look at the likes of Fabregas, Matic, Oscar, Costa and it's just not the same.

Like I said, it probably sounds stupid, but I'm not sure how to explain it.

It doesn't sound stupid, actually the complete opposite and I fully agree with you.

With the current bunch of players, I only have that connection with JT, Ivanovic, Ramires, Cahill(obv), Azpilicueta, Willian and the feelings are growing for young Zouma. And Ramires + Cahill are not even starters.

Azpi - a warrior and already feels like a future captain and legend.

Willian - what a player, liked him from the beginning, he always give you at least a 7 no matter who we play, when we play and how the others play.

Zouma - short time here but gives you a feeling he always tries hard and wants to fight.

We are really lucky to have witnessed Cech, Terry, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole, Lampard, Drogba, Gudjohnsen, Essien, Ballack etc at the same and for so long.

To be honest if guus works his magic & gets this team playing the way they know they can play then give him another yr with maybe jt has some sort of assistent role & why not give lamps or the drogs a coachning role...start from scratch & build within...

I hope Guus will do good job for the club but to be honest I think we should look for a better available manages over the summer + some serious reinforcements...

Because:

1) Pep will go to already excellent City,

2) It's quite possible Jose may end up in Mamchester United with huge funds to buy new players.

4) Arsenal having great squad.

5) Kloop rebuilding Liverpool

Don't get me wrong Guus is a great manager but do you think we will be able to compete with other top clubs that are making huge improvements.

I've lost trust in the board's capacity to build for the long-term and ensure sustainable success remains for many years to come rather than going for the quick-fix approach which is great in the present day but detrimental to our long-term interests.

There's no reason to believe that Emenalo's proposed resignation was a stunt to generate and change public opinion of him and the club. He's not a well-liked figure and stunt or no stunt I doubt opinions would change about his role within the club. I'm cynical about the board in some aspects but not in this case to be honest.

I just think Roman is very fond of him for whatever reason but his promotion through the ranks of the Chelsea hierarchy continually puzzles me considering his lack of credentials before he joined the club in 2007 and the questionable decisions and relationships he's had with previous managers since he's been a significant part of the club.

Lack of credentials did you say?  Emenalo was brought in by none other than Avram Grant, Roman's favorite henchman.

Btw, Emenalo used to play for Juande Ramos and Avram Grant.

Interesting there is a thread on Redcafe about DoF, and who will be the first one there.

'Michael Ahamefula Emenalo Has done a brilliant job at Chelsea the past couple of season with them. What I m getting at is that we do not need a world renown name, but someone who perhaps is good at Fantasy football and is not on top of the league just by sheer luck, but with great footballing knowledge.'

Imagine Jose's face if on his first day in the job, he walked out onto Carrington and there was his nemesis at the side of the training pitch.

I'm actually surprised by their conclusion on Emenalo! How could they possibly say he's done a 'brilliant job'?

It doesn't sound stupid at all! I think you've made a great post Zeta.

Feeling connected and emotionally invested with the playing squad and even the managers is vital for the club and for the supporters to feel a part of. I think this connection has diminished since the departures of Lampard, Drogba and Cech and they haven't been adequately replaced with those who can fill their voids.

It was never going to be easy replacing these legends but I think a lack of "spirit" in this current playing squad is the reason why we lack the fight or willingness to play strongly until the very end on top of other issues such as poor tactics and complacency.

Schmidt and Tuchel?

Yes, especially Schmidt. Huge fan of his football philosophy. If not here I would love to see what he can do with a bigger budget

Schmidt's picture reminds me of Tom Hiddlestone as Loki in the Thor movies. If we end up hiring Schmidt, I demand that we also give him a staff (The Sceptre stick, not the office folks).

Vincenzo Montella is defintely the best lookingof the managers in that article.

Yes I'm drunk.

Marca and Kicker are saying Pellegrino will be the next coach. With our squad it does not matter if it's him, Pep or the average Playstation player. Yet I am surprised, because for Roman that would be a big embarrassment. Being the dump for City as soon as they get the coach that Roman has always wanted. And that even though Manchester is an inferior location for Pep and his family.

Guess no one saw that coming a few years or even months ago.

Yeah cannot see him working here and it is a come down for Roman. He is used to taking managers from good sides, Jose and AVB from Porto, Carlo leaving Milan to come here, Scolari from the Brazil national side etc.

Taking a Man City cast off instead....

City reject but unfortunately I think it's all we're left with. It's a massive season for us 16/17. Missing out on CL this year will mean the pressure will be on for us to get it next year. The new manager has to garauntee it.

Seems like I'm the only one who actually likes Pellegrini. I would be happy with him, only problem is his style is complelety different to what we've had at the club. If attacking football is the way the club wants to go then Pellegrini is the perfect manager to set that foundation, as City knew full well. What would annoy me is hiring Pellegrini and then getting a defensive coach like Conte, etc afterwards.

I hope it's not Pellegrino!!

I have a feeling it will be one of the following:

fabio capello, frank rijkaard, simione, jamie carragher, conte.

No to Pellegrini. He may give us aesthetically pleasing football, but that is all. He will not give us a winner. His time in Man City might have yielded a champion but with the amount of money spent on that squad - the end product can only be considered as under-whelming.

I wouldn't mind Pellegrini either, hes a good manager who's teams play an enjoyable style to watch. I more blame City's player rather than the manager for being so crap in Europe and realistically we could be signing the manager who wins 2 of the last 3 titles.

There's the fallacy that the coach only is responsible for the style a team can play successfully. In fact, it does not matter if the players aren't suited to it. We wanted to play attacking football for a long time, but failed because we don't have enough technically gifted players. Oscar, Matic, Costa, Ramires, Mikel, the whole defence are all miserable with the ball at their feet. In order to play expansive, attacking football you need the rarest breed of technically gifted players of whom we just have one - Hazard.

AVB was the most prominent victim of the fallacy that the coach alone can change the style of play. It is not a coincidence that Guardiola has supposedly said we needed 10 new players.

Pellegrini will change nothing.
