May 31, 201610 yr If anything having an amazing defence brings it's own inherent problems, keepers need to have incredible concentration levels as they will spend large parts of games doing nothing then may need to pull of an incredible save.
May 31, 201610 yr I'd have no problem seeing Courtois playing with his Gameboy if our defence was that good :D
May 31, 201610 yr If anything having an amazing defence brings it's own inherent problems, keepers need to have incredible concentration levels as they will spend large parts of games doing nothing then may need to pull of an incredible save. Exactly dkw. Probably the best two defensive coaches in the game, Simeone and JM, have been more than happy to have Thibaut Courtois in goal for the last 5 seasons ... I think that is all we need to know really !
May 31, 201610 yr A Juventus fan came on to talk Chelsea to Talk about Conte Hello, I am a Juventus italian fan and maybe I can help you to understand which kind of coach Conte is...(sorry for my english, I hope you will understand) When he arrived in Juventus, he found a tragic situation...the previous season the team, with Del Neri, arrived at the 7th place and all the fans were demoralised. However, the 2011 summer was spectacular: we bought Pirlo, Vidal, Vucinic and Lichtsteiner and we inaugurated the new stadium. When he arrived, he said that the best tactic for him was the 4-2-4, the most difficult to teach and to do, he said. So, the first official match against Parma we played so: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Chiellini, De Ceglie; Marchisio, Pirlo; Pepe, Del Piero, Matri, Giaccherini It was probably the best match I ever seen of Conte's team (ok, the opponents weren't extraordinary) and I think that that match can help you to understand some important things: the key role of the wings, the importance of the movements without the ball (see the Marchisio's goal) and the importance of the defense. We played in such way also the next games, then he understood that he had a fabulous midfielder: Arturo Vidal. So he changed the tactic and we played with the 4-3-3, with Marchisio, Pirlo, Vidal; Pepe, Matri, Vucinic. You can see this tactic in the match against Milan at Juventus Stadium (2-0, Marchisio, Marchisio), with some differences (not Matri, but Vucinic as center-forward and Krasic as winger). Another great game. It was a 4-3-3, but when we hadn't the ball, it turned into 4-5-1, because for Conte it is very important the sacrifice of the wingers when the team hasn't the ball. Then, there was the match that changed everything: Napoli-Juventus (3-3), the first time that Juve played with the 3-5-2 (that was because also Napoli played so) and with the defence with Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini. That was not a great match, but was the beginning of the current Juventus. We played so the rest of the season and we win the title. This was the 2011-2012 season, maybe the best title in Juventus' history (because we didn't expect it). I tried to explain you the principles of Conte's style, but the most important is: never give up. I hope that you will understand what I write, this evening I will tell you the season 2012-2013. Season 2012-2013 In the first season in Juventus, Conte noticed 2 problems: left wing and strikers. So, the club bought Asamoah, Isla and Giovinco. There were also other operations, such Pogba, Bentner,…. The whole season we played with the 3-5-2, with this formation Buffon Barzagli-Bonucci-Chiellini Lichtsteiner-Marchisio-Pirlo-Vidal-Asamoah Giovinco-Vucinic We won easily the Serie A and we went to the quarter-finals of Champions League. If I should suggest you a match to see, I will say another time Juventus-Parma, the first of the season. In that match, the first goal was scored by Lichtsteiner, with a classical play of the Conte’s team: ball to the left, then cross and move of the other winger that scores. In CL, very important were obviously the matches against Chelsea, but the most significant was against Bayern at the Allianz Arena…I think it was the first time Conte understood that there was teams that could win easily with us (fortunately today is not so)… So, after the win of the Serie A, he tried to change the team, like against Torino when we played with 3-5-1-1 with Marchisio behind Vucinic, but it was not a good idea. Conte understood two things: that team could play well only with 3-5-2 and needed new strikers. That season was the first of Pogba in our team and at the beginning he hadn’t many chance, but Conte administrated him very well. Season 2013 2014 (the last in Juventus) To improve our results in CL, the club bought 2 top strikers: Carlitos Tevez and Fernando LLorente. Furthermore, arrived also Angelo Ogbonna (he played with us 2 season). The tactic was always the same 3-5-2 Buffon Barzagli-Bonucci-Chiellini Lichtsteiner- Pogba -Pirlo- Vidal -Asamoah (but Marchisio played many times) Tevez-LLorente (at the beginning of the season played Vucinic with Tevez) We were easily champions again, because the opponents couldn’t stop our new strikers: 102 points (record). We played some matches very well (like against Lazio in Juventus Stadium 4-1 (you should see the highlights, what a nice movements without the ball)), but that was not our best year: we were too strong, so we often we played very slowly, thus many matches were very boring (like Livorno-Juventus 0-2). But the big delusion came from Europe…we went out against Galatasaray in the Group Stage of CL. In that situation, Conte received many critics: we played 4 horrible matches against Galatasaray and Copenaghen, because we were very slow to move the ball and very predictable…4 indecent matches…fortunately we received 2 penalties against Copenaghen in Torino, otherwise we will probably not defeat them. But we played also 2 great matches against Real Madrid (2-1 in Madrid, 2-2 in Torino), with a different tactic: 4-3-3 Buffon Caseres-Barzagli-Chiellini (in Torino Bonucci)-Ogbonna (in Torino Asamoah) Vidal -Pirlo- Pogba Marchisio -LLorente- Tevez We deserved the victory in either the matches, but in Madrid Chiellini was expelled and in Torino we were very unluky…. Then, there was the Europa League…a tragedy…we knew that we were the best in that competition and we thought that we could win (the final was in Torino)…but we were defeated by Benfica…in that EL, we played 8 matches (2 Trabzonspor, 2 Fiorentina, 2 Lione and 2 Benfica), but only 1 good match (the second against Trabzonspor). If you want to see a terrible match, you should see the first against Lione (the most horrible Juventus’match I have ever seen). That was the end of Conte’s adventure in Juventus…a fantastic Scudetto, but the delusion of Europe that was huge… I hope that now you know Conte a little better…. http://forum.talkchelsea.net/topic/21021-the-conte-thread/?page=20
May 31, 201610 yr No doubt he will change formation/tactics based on personnel available to him, but right now barring improvement from last season, and/or new players coming in he will see a physical weakness in midfield. Hopefully the Naingolan rumours are true.
June 1, 201610 yr Ithink he'll do well, but right now the moves (or lack there of) we're making in the transfer market have been underwhelming. The players we're linked to seem to be average. I think we need to show more ambition in the market otherwise things will be difficult for him.
June 1, 201610 yr Surely he knows the squad, formation etc for Italy so he should have been able to (alongside his assistants??) review DVD's of last season and decide where we need strengthening. Based on that surely he says to RA et al please get me players A, B & C.......D-Z ?? Maybe our super Emenalo has not decided himself which players to buy...!!
June 1, 201610 yr seems a few italy fans are pissed at his exclusion of bonaventura and jorgihno. however, i have no idea who they are or how they've played this past season.
June 1, 201610 yr Thiago motta handed the Italy no. 10 shirt. We should tear up that contract and, just to be sure, stick conte down a well and see if he floats. The Italy squad in full then: Graziano pelle (x1) , gianluilgi buffon (x1) , giacomo milneri (x21).
June 1, 201610 yr I watched Italy against Scotland the other day and they didn't really impress me at (either side). Italy won't go far I'd wager.
June 1, 201610 yr Yes they are. Jorginho & Bonaventura are the two most creative players Italy have at the moment, Conte seems to have packed the squad with grafters. I reckon they will be out in the 2nd round if they make it out of their group. That will be a blessing for us since he wants to assess the squad before sanctioning any buy or sales. On the other hand taking a squad to the Euro devoid of any creativity, and any of Italy's promising talents is a bit of a concern.
June 1, 201610 yr Conte really loves Giaccherini... Actually wouldn't be surprised if he is here come august. He is sh*t though so that would be a problem ovbiously.
June 1, 201610 yr Interesting question I heard today- would Chelsea fans take Conte and Italy winning the Euros over England if the two teams met in the final? With the view that winning with Italy would help cement his reputation as a top manager and maybe provide a winning mentality that could be transferred to us next season, because let's be honest Italy aren't exactly favourites so if they won it'd be due in large part to Conte. Club or country in other words. Obviously Italian Chelsea fans have an easy choice Edited June 1, 201610 yr by Haz139

It matters little what he does with his national side
June 1, 201610 yr Obviously I'd want England to win I that situation. Getting that group of players to the final would be huge achievement for conte (and hodgson too if we're honest). I think going out in the group stage would be the best possible outcome for Chelsea anyway. The players will be convinced by him (or not) mostly through working with him and the results they achieve. June 1, 201610 yr I think we have to take what he does with the National team with a pinch of salt. Club football is very different to that of a National team and his reputation at Juve is fantastic. Conte seems to know how average the Italy side is so seems to have risked a few creative players for players who work hard, much like Chelsea do when we go for the dreaded Mikel - Matic against bigger teams. Its not pretty but its more likely to grind out results against better opponents.

Yep I'd personally love them to falter at the group stage, get Conte's mind on Chelsea as early as possible. Sadly, I feel Italy have a knack of not looking great, showing up late, looking really stylish when they get off the plane then turning it on when the tournaments start. Multiple world cup winners. June 1, 201610 yr http://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/ancelotti-chelsea-are-getting-a-top-coach-conte-he-will-succeed?#:i23P2BCvZeACnA King Carlo says Conte will be a success and he would return to Chelsea one day if asked..
June 1, 201610 yr Carlo has unfinished business here. Would be nice to see him back here, and he's still in his early - mid 50's so plenty time left in the game too. Once he has won the league and CL with bayern, I see him coming back to the bridge. Edited June 1, 201610 yr by enigma
June 1, 201610 yr Only top coach we won't have had is probably pep. I would love to have a coach like juup heyneckes.

June 2, 201610 yr Spoiler alert? Conte: Italy are Euro 2016 'outsiders' http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03wyqmz Conte: Italy lack talented young players http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03wythw
June 2, 201610 yr Here you are Some coach at Burnley made that. I love watching this sort of thing, it helps me with my coaching. After seeing the Juve fan’s comments in the recent pages on this topic and the video above, it seems certain that Conte will set his standard 3-5-2 stall out as soon as he arrives at the Bridge. Our new boss would like nothing better than to repeat the immediate success he had with his Juventus team and this would be the logical way to achieve that aim with the minimum amount of fuss made or risk taken. However, looking at what he has to work with at the moment, he will doubtless make just as many changes in personnel as he did back in that summer of 2011, and a few more besides. Not to do so would imply he’s been hamstrung in the transfer market, by virtue of lack of funding (unlikely if the latest reports are true) inflated price or lack of CL football, and would leave him looking at the following first team squad of players fulfilling the requirements of those numbered positions, as outlined and explained so concisely in the video:- (1) Courtois (2) Dave/Zouma (5) JT/Cahill (3) Branna/Clarke-Salter (4) Fabregas (6) Matic/Mikel (8) Willian/LRC (7) Pedro/Kenedy (11) Hazard/Baba (9) Costa/Falcao (10) Remy/Traore This core group [bar Willian] seriously underperformed last season and certain players unsuitability for the next one are glaringly obvious to those of us who watched in disbelief as events unfolded and plans unravelled. Now Conte’s plans are to be implemented and when the essential tactical elements are broken down further into possession categories (see video) it becomes increasingly evident that he will have major decisions to make, not least in terms of ditching the old guard in favour of new recruits, whether they be replaced by new signings or emergent talent. For example, if Conte’s remit echoes Roman’s insistence on the advancement of our loan and Academy players, combined with financial restraint, our young lads suddenly come into the reckoning as genuine contenders for first team places rather than to merely make up the numbers, as several substandard signings did last season. How this pans out is made easier to understand by reference to the video and the possession categories….. In Possession - playing out from the back accurately against a low press, the back three are split wide and this makes the need for pace in the (2) and (3)s essential - we have it in abundance in the 2s, but not in both of the 3s and therefore Clarke-Salter, Ake, Aina and Chalobah may well have opportunities for advancement. They also have to tackle and pass well, directly into the strikers and behind the back line so, as JT was [is] arguably the best at these skills centrally, the likes of Christensen, Miazga and Tomori should stake their claim to be his long term successor. If not, rumours that JT has had to settle for a new role in his final year can only mean that either Bonucci remains on our radar, or the alleged continued interest in Stones is more fact than fiction. The offensive midfielders (6) and (8) clear pathways to the strikers and here the (8)s look fine to me, but the (6)s were often ponderous last season. Baker and Palmer are more suited to the (8) role and are very talented, so we have an embarrassment of riches in this area, whereas the same cannot be said of the (6)s, unless Ake is given his chance here instead of in defence. The (8)s must also support the strikers, often in wide positions - Willian is better at this than RLC, though the latter has proved capable of doing the job in the England U-21 side playing well in the hole behind Redmond and Watmore in the Toulon tournament. The (7) and (11)s drop to support, playing their 1-touch stuff behind the full backs, and the four we have are ideal, although some will have their doubts about Baba even though on last season’s evidence he is the best crosser of a ball we‘ve got. Swift has good delivery too and this has been recognised, as he is often the replacement for the versatile Watmore in England’s U-21s. My view on him is that, should Conte feel he is not going to make it with us, we could do a lot worse than make a tempting offer for Watmore, in my opinion the most promising young wing back/striker in the Premier League. The (4) role is made for Cesc and we have no readymade understudy, but, as many of you know from other threads, I did like the look of Kyle Scott and still hope he stays and makes the necessary step up. If not, Charlie Colkett is another who has the range of pass, but he is more of a (6) than a (4) and looks to me like a future captain in the making in this position. The (9) and (10) pairing must stay close for combinations and be prepared to make runs behind defenders to receive one-touch passes, which sounds like the perfect Cesc/Costa partnership in action, with Traore/Solanke/Abraham looking to impress as understudies. This is our weakest area in terms of experience, which is presumably why we are in the market for a tried and tested Morata or a once tried [and might be tested again] Lukaku. Out Of Possession - sliding across in defence means the back five becomes a back four and there’s a need for (2) and (3) to be able to defend one-on-one in wide areas. No problem for the (2)s above, but the same cannot be said of the (3)s - long term Ake and Chalobah look the best bets to fulfil this role, along with Sterling perhaps, if he continues his rapid progress. Incidentally, it is here, when retreating on turnover to a low block, that RLC gives the impression of being at his laziest. Covering the spaces in the last third and sensing the danger that exists in this area is what Vidal and Marchisio did so convincingly for Conte and trusting a young RLC to do the same on a regular basis would take a big leap of faith, especially as it fits the skill set of both Matic and Mikel like a glove. On the other hand, if the Nainggolan rumours are true, RLC could end up either as a perfect understudy, or merely a fourth in line player, dependent upon how Conte ends up rating everybody. With a back five and midfield three the (7) and (11)s have to retreat quickly, sliding on a switch of play, and out of the four we have currently for these positions the (7)s look to have the versatility, especially Kenedy whereas the (11)s, being more attacking by nature, appear less well equipped. There is little to add about the (9) and (10) role out of possession, except to say that when we pressed and countered from deep last season only Costa directed play and prevented switches expertly. The job was simply not done properly in his absence and when Conte studies the performances of the rest at their various levels only Abraham will stand out as a tireless worker. Sadly, his lack of experience is likely to keep him at the back of any queue for this spot if we persist in keeping Falcao, Remy and Pato in it as well. In truth, whether the majority of fans are in favour of big spending or youth development, in our present parlous mid-table state it is immaterial, because the only preference that matters now is Conte’s and the level of disillusionment has been such that Roman can, in all probability, do no right in this situation. Backing the new boss to the hilt with cash could mean the arrival of a host of players and at the same time a mass culling of expectations in the Academy and loan sectors, whereas an insistence on wholesale youth progression stymies Conte before he even steps off the plane. A successful balance has to be found - and over the coming months that will be the toughest part of the Italian’s new job. .
