Chelsea end long standing partnership with adidas

Featured Replies

Not sure if this has been posted already, but we are set to finish our partnership with Adidas at the end of next season.

There will be just one more Adidas kit to come, for the coming season.

Does anyone else think that the timing of this is pretty strange? I mean, who is going to want to buy the new kit now that it will be noticeably aged from the following season? Of course there are some who dont care and buy the kit every year, but something about this is odd.

Perhaps Adidas have a clause where they pay us less depending on finishing position and it has started a bit of a fall out?

Another possible reason is while the deal was the biggest we ever had, it was eclipsed by others soon after, United's deal in particular. I'm open to correction on that.

If I am right it probably suits us to look for a better deal, especially with the loss of CL revenue.

Nike or Under Armour and I'd be happy. I'd have say I think it's Nike though, I don't know if Under Armour have the monster financial backing to pay us more than Adidas. I've always liked Nike though for general sportswear anyway, the quality is always good in their gear

Adidas have produced some fine kits for us, but they've gotten boring and they never surpassed Umbro, who I'd take back in a heartbeat, who has seen the recent England kits? They're horrible. Wouldn't want Nike, don't rate New Balance, the Liverpool kits look cheap as chips, don't like Puma, least said about Erreà the beater, as for Warrior, please God no. I wouldn't be opposed to Under Armour, the Tottenham designs are fairly neat, I like the Macron Villa kits.

Anyone reckon that the lack of value in the ten year deal is part of the reason why Gourlay went?

That and the samsung deals we had, purslow who I believe it is was brought in to sort our sponsorship deals seems to have done alot better job in the short time he has been here than gourlay was doing by the end, 10 year deals in football are way way to long, at most you want 5 year deals, what was a good deal with adidas in 2013 is a average deal in 2016 and a pretty poor one by the time it would finish in 2023.

Weird... Well it is business. Maybe because we are out of CL.

This has nothing to do with our current season.

United secured a £75m a year deal with no European football because they're one of the biggest clubs in the world.

We as a club have a huge global fan base and the ten year deal wasn't good value when compared to the deals that clubs of a similar stature are getting.

Apparently we want Nike but they're just about to agree a deal with Spurs so maybe not.

Even heard Japanese firm Uniqlo are interested or Chinese firm Li Ning. Although I doubt such an unknown brand would pay us £50 mil per year that we want.

All the talk seems to be about the club being pissed that Utd are getting more money and attention from Adidas.

Uniqlo were the brand bought to the forefront by Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic, so they got some clout, i like puma designed kits as well.

Not sure if it has already been mentioned in this thread but Jake Cohen managed to shed some light on this situation. He's a sports lawyer who covers a lot of legal, financial and economic issues arising in football. Oh yeah, he's also a Chelsea fan.

"Christian Purslow has ended several existing commercial deals early in favour of his own from the moment he joined Chelsea. Turkish Airlines were lined up at £25m p.a before Purslow came on board. Once he joined, he went out and convinced Yokohama to pay £40m. Purslow also landed Chelsea their first ever training kit deal with Carabao worth £10m p.a. I say this all the time, but a top commercial director is literally worth his or her weight in gold. Speaking of commercial directors, Vitesse Arnhem's last CD left to take a new job in 2014. That job? Head of global football at Under Armour.."

"If Chelsea sold 3 million shirts this season at £50.00 each, that's £23m for Chelsea and £127m for Adidas. Easy to see why Chelsea have opted out. This is how kit deals work. 10-15% goes to the club, the rest to Nike, Adidas etc. But surely Chelsea is worth more than £27m p.a. with our following."
