We've got a new Kepa

Featured Replies

Do think he's a very good keeper with a decent all-round game but I am concerned how he get's beaten by long range shots hit high in the top corners. He isn't the tallest of keepers and I think Cech and even old big nose would have kept that first Burnley goal out yesterday = despite it being a very good strike.

Naah no one was saving that.. pace/dip swerve and it barely sneaked under the bar.. Impossible to save those..

He is a decent keeper but still has a lot of learning and developing to do, I just dont get the same secure feeling with Kepa in goal as I did with Cech and even TBO. Courtois's shot stopping may not have been as good however the team could count on him to claim everything around the 6 yard box, Kepa is still hesitant in commanding the box and its really hurting us.

Honestly, he is the least improved player this season. He's decent at some departments still, has declined in others and been shaky in the usual suspects for him.

His reflection is among the best in the world, the way he denied that deflection was spectacular, but he needs to find a way to build on his strengths.

Needs to work on his wrist, because his hands seem very flappy. Seen far too many goals go in that he actually makes contact on, but cant actually keep the ball out from the net.

That and needing to be a bit more commanding and he'll be top class

Just seen some stats on Sky Sports News that basically said we’ve conceded 31 chances which was second lowest but have conceded 16 goals from them chances which was the 4th worst ratio.

Kepa also have the worst saves ratio in the division.

Interesting...

So we just forget the saves he made and just focus on the goals that our defenders should have closed down

No-one is saying that but unfortunately for keepers, people DO forget saves and highlight mistakes or errors.

I like him and do prefer him to Courtois, but for the money he cost us, he still needs to do better IMO. When I first saw him what stood out for me is that he didn't look the tallest and most commanding of keepers and so it has proved. I don't keep track, but I think opponents are well aware that if they hit it high into the corners, they have a decent chance of getting on the score sheet - more than they would against other top keepers.

It's not even in the top corner Nibs. All he has to do is take one step to his side and tip it over the bar. He doesn't have to dive. It's rank poor goalkeeping and it's not the first time this season.

There are days he looks great. He's got quick reflexes, he's good with his feet, and he's good off his line, but he hasn't come out and claimed a cross in his life, and as you say, he's too easily beaten from long range, partly due to lack of height.

His level has dropped this season and he needs to up his game, because Frank won't hesitate to get someone better if he thinks he can.

Interesting...

That's very surprising, are you sure that's right?

I think Kepa is an upgrade on Tibo personally.

Can you find something to back that up please.

I like Kepa as well, I think he could dominate his area a bit more, but it was something that was on Sky Sports News on Monday morning when Sue Smith &  Stephen Warnock was on, they didn’t show it again so I haven’t got any way of proving what I saw.

It was on Sky Sports News on Monday morning, Sky Sports’ Jo Wilson, Sue Smith & Stephen Warnock was talking about it.

I thought they might repeat it at some point during the day but it sounds like they didn’t so I can’t prove what I saw on TV.

Maybe it’ll be on the Premier League website in their stats columns.

If I find anything I’ll post it.

It was just something I watched and I found the stats interesting.

OK, so here's some more info about the shots, goals etc.. we concede.

Quote from Frank:

"Now people can look at it as we’ve improved since those early stages, and I’m sure we have, but sometimes I believe that fine lines do change games," he said. "They also change perceptions, and the perception of us in this early part of the season is that we’re conceding too many goals, which I agree with.

"But when you scratch beneath the surface, you see that in terms of chances conceded, and shots conceded on our goal, we’re in the top one, two or three, I think behind Liverpool and maybe City".

Which was the point Sky Sports News showed yesterday.

I havn't found the proof of the amount yet but Sky Sports News said yesterday that we've conceded 33 shots on goal and Frank's quote confirms that in that aspect we've conceded around the 3rd or 4th least in the league.

https://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/frank-lampard-solskjaer-chelsea-players-17168533  (near the end of article)

The link below is from the Premier League website and has Kepa as 20th in the division with the save ratio stat.

This website also says Kepa has made 17 saves and the fact we've conceded 16 goals this season actually adds up perfectly to conceding 33 shots overall.

https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/saves

So conceding 33 shots overall and 16 of them resulting in actual goals conceded is how they have obviously worked out the shots to goals ratio.

So nearly half of all shots we concede end up in the back of our net, I think the ratio is around 49%.

Now this post isn't a dig at Kepa as there are deeper reasons why 49% of all shots we've faced end up being goals.

I was just following up from my post from yesterday as I found them interesting stats, and I was then asked to provide proof of what I saw on TV yesterday (which is understandable) as nobody else saw Sky Sports News yesterday morning.

What an excellent save tonight after barely bring involved for the previous 95 minutes.

Yep, massive save that and saved us 2 points.

He was going to get an easy clansheet on Saturday until that dive and idiotic VAR gave away a penalty, and can't under estimate the value of the last second save, the 3rd or 5th spot probably will be like 2-4 points at the end of the season. The Burnley, he had no chance with either goals. To be honest, if the correct penalty call was made ( f* you again VAR), we'd be 5 up and there was no coming back. His shot saving ratio hasn't been great this season, but to be honest he was better than the stats showed.

We concede a lot of goals where he doesn't even move. He's hopeless at crosses. I think he's having a really poor season. Some will say he made a vital save at the end of the game on Saturday. For my money, you expect your keeper to make saves from time to time.

I agree, there’s far too many goals we concede where I think ‘he really could do better there’ or ‘he should be saving that’. Very rarely does he ever come out and just clear everything out to get rid of the ball. For the money we paid I don’t think we‘re getting a return. I actually don’t think he’s as good with his feet as it’s made out. That chipped ball out to the wings he tries a lot goes out of the park pretty often.

He’s young and will hopefully improve as I don’t see us changing things there anytime soon.
