We've got a new Kepa

Featured Replies

Probably needs to go. Can't let in as many soft goals as he does and expect to stay first choice at Chelsea.

Goalkeepers at Pickfords level are better.

In hindsight I very much doubt we'd splash 70m on him again. Unfortunately that's not going to help us now.

Personally I don't think he's good enough, but I don't see us replacing him anytime soon.

Highly rated him before this season started, now I'm not so sure, he seems all over the place.

I do actually like his passing, yeah he gave a sloppy one away today, but so did Ederson who's probably the best passing GK there is. But some of these goals he has let in this season have been criminal, it's gotten even worse than late stage Courtois. I understand that he's playing with a very shakey defence but there are some goals he really needs to be saving, that Wolves game for example, shocking mistakes, you could count about 10 this season at least, it's not good enough.

He's still young though, I remember when De Gea first went to United and he was absolutely dreadful.

sh*te this season. He has better reflexes than Tibo but he always tries to predict the shot early or overthink things so most of the time he's either too late or too early at diving thus why the goals he let in are often so soft.

1st goal shouldn't have commit too early, 2nd goal should have dived earlier.

He has never been as good as folk make out. He concedes so many soft goals it’s frightening. I’ve said it before that I don’t actually think he’s that good with the ball at his feet, he kicks a fair amount out the park and there’s been a few (admittedly not as bad) incidents like today. £70m is looking like we had our pants pulled down massively.

He is still young in goalkeeping terms so maybe he’ll improve over the years but as things stand I’m not sure he’s of the required level we need.

The one thing that's worrying is the amount of goals that go in through his hands.

He has really weak wrists, I hate his penalties, always gets a hand to it but it still goes in.

I’m starting to get really worried about Kepa. Someone showed me a stat earlier in the season that he has the worst shots faced to goals conceded ratio in the entire league. Granted, you can argue that of those shots faced some may have been closer to the goal with lack of defensive cover etc etc. His distribution is ok but he doesn’t command his area and in comparison to someone like De Gea his reflexes are slow and shot stopping average at best.

HAS to improve as he looks the weak link right now.

I know goal-keeping has moved on as it seems to be as much about ball-playing ability and distribution as it is about shot-stopping these days. But when I look back at great top teams of the past they all had a TOP keeper who was reliable and earned them so many points each season. Shilton at forest, Clemence at Liverpool, Seaman at Arsenal, Schmeichel at Man Utd and then of course we had Cech. Can't believe Kepa cost us £70m (I know that's not his fault), but he is nowhere near being in that league of top keepers and needs a massive improvement as he could easily have cost us two goals yesterday and that seems to be happening more often than him actually earning us points.

The first goal was a deflection but either way he should have done better there. Second goal isn't on him, so I wouldn't blame him for that one.

But I would blame him for giving the ball to Aguerro and he should be saving the Sterling shot which thankfully was disallowed.

Look a massive upgrade on Tbo last year, seems to have gone backwards under Lampard.

Surprising that Lamps wants to bring in Shay Given, with how poor Derby have been in the goal keeping department for the last couple of years.

Bringing in a proper backup keeper to challenge him needs to be a priority when our ban is lifted.

Seems very strange that a keeper is rated on his ‘Passing’ but that’s modern football i suppose.

Since the rules changed to stop keepers picking up back passes they have effectively become a 12th outfield player while the team had possession, so being comfortable on the ball is definitely important these days. This is what made Kepa an ideal goalkeeper for Sarri‘s possession-based system but maybe not so much for Lampard‘s style.

I think he has potential to become a great goalkeeper but he’s not there yet and I still haven’t forgotten his behaviour in the league cup final. I wouldn’t feel bad for him if he was dropped for Caballero for a while. Show him that he’s not untouchable despite the record fee.

He made one mistake against City and that was the crap pass to Aguero - it didn't result in a goal.

Absolutely nothing he could have done about the 2 goals so to hear the criticism from some on here is ridiculous.

We've heard quite consistently throughout the season that he couldnt have done much about some of the goals that he has conceded however what sets world class keepers apart from the average ones is that they consistently keep out shots which they have no right to get close to.

The stats speak for themselves in terms of Shots & Goal ratio and it is very concerning considering our young defense as they seem to be punished every time they allow a shot on goal.

I dont think its entirely Kepa's fault as he is young and still adjusting to the league, he is low on confidence hence he seems to be overthinking by either committing himself too early to certain saves and too late on others. If we had a viable option available maybe it would allow Kepa to get his confidence back on the training ground rather than have him face the music each week.

So what exactly could he have done about those 2 goals on the weekend, and who would have saved them?
