Ethan Ampadu

They have an option to buy. He will likely be 100% book value profit which we desperately need.

That's a shame, there's lots of deadwood that could be offloaded in the squad, hope there's a buy back clause

He's having a fantastic loan this year, really hope we don't sell him

Where's Ampadu? Felt like I looked for ages...(found him, far right middle)

Funnily that's the kind of chart @Argo would use to tell everyone how great CHO is...now it's saying Rice is a must buy. His tools are working against him.

Another one where you feel like he could have been anything, but it just didn't work out.

Loan to Leipzig should have been perfect for him but unlike others Christensen, Mount, James etc. he just couldn't make the big jump while on loan.

Don’t think we “desperately” need to sell ampadu but at the same time don’t see much room for him — or see Potter viewing it that way, I should say. Which, in my opinion, sucks because I like and rate Ethan. Would think he could be a good squad player for us with his ability to play CDM and CB at a high level.

since we are need of central midfielders, letting Ethan go wouldn’t be the smartest, but might be what’s best for him and his career.

i think we will see CHO, Pulisic, Ziyech, Jorginho, Azpi, Mendy, and Ruben all leave the club by August 31. I imagine there are others that I’m not thinking of at the moment that will be looking to get out. Ultimately, the hang up will be the wages some of these players are on.

Looking at the data, would have been smarter to have kept him at the end of the season than an injury prone Zakaria on double the fee, and most likely 2-3x the wages. At 22 he is still way off his peak, and has been growing with each loan move.

Wow! As mentioned further up in the thread really impressive to see Rice at a relegation threatened team outperforming the like of Pedri, Tchouameni, Zubimendi etc.

Wonder what @Gol15 opinion on this is?

There is some hype in Serie A about him but I got the impression posters on here are not convinced. Yet he fits the profile...

Never seen him play tbh. Can someone explain what are the doubts?

I've always liked Ampadu, expectational passing range. He was unfortunately never gonna get game time at CB when we had the likes of Ake, Christensen, Chalobah already with us and neither at DM with Kante and Jorginho. The loans we sent him out on didn't help his development either to be honest.

I think it's best to sell him for his sake, I don't see him ever getting a real chance with us.

Works hard but he's solid at best. Can't see a future for him at Chelsea. He did well for Spezia though they were relegated. It looks like Udinese are interested in him.

Did he ever work on not diving in to a tackle, has that gotten any better while in Italy?

He's still prone to dodgy judgement in tackles. Bit of a free kick-magnet in dangerous areas.

And for Wales too.

I don't think we should sell him. He's only 22 yet he has 3 full seasons of top flight football under his belt. Not to mention one of the best passing statistics for a CB in Europe.

Could see us regretting it if we sell and he goes on to become a star

I hope we hang on to him, but I would imagine he's fed up of being shoved out on loan without ever getting a look-in.

I know he can make rash challenges, but his competitive, pretty aggressive attitude is not something I would see as a negative

Ampadu always looked more of a DM than a CB to me. Thought he played well the few times he was used in that role.

Played DM for Wales this month. He was badly exposed because his midfield partner was Ramsey in the first game, who was absymal, and Morrell in the second, and he (Morrell) was sent off after 20 minutes. He did Ok but he was up against it in both games through no fault of his own.

Maybe if he had been given consistent game time at DM at senior level instead of switching back and forth he could have developed his skills in that role but I always felt he was more like a David Luiz type defender.

Ake went on loan to some BAD teams, and look where he is now. I think Ampadu resembles his style of play and skill set, a lot.

Huh? He was at Reading for a short stint in the Championship, but both loans to Watford and Bournemouth were in the EPL. He won Watford's young POTY, was recalled from Bournemouth when we were short of CBs under Conte, and then was bought promptly by Bournemouth the next season for a club record fee.

Not similar at all. Ake always had excellent positioning and reading of the game from young age, all he needed was games to develop. Amapdu's greatest quality is his passing, he doesn't have the positioning and reading of the game down yet, this is why he needed to be carefully managed with his loans and sending him off to Leiipzig aged 18 was an amatuer decision from the club.
