Good result, clean sheet but unusually not the best game to watch today compared to other matches.

Kepa 7

Alonso 6

Tomori 9

Christensen 7

Azpilicueta 6

Jorginho 7

Barkley 5

Mount 6

Pedro 5

Willian 7

Abraham 6

The attacking players were all below par today. Pedro and Barkley especially, Mount didn't offer much either and the fullbacks were poor going forward.

Sorry, The Board of Trustees couldn’t feed themselves (just to confirm I only cooked the food, I didn’t physically feed it to them). :laugh2:

Not great, but I thought it was better than the Leicester and Sheff Utd games. Crowd seemed a bit subjued at times with the Brighton fans making more noise.

Funny that some fans seem more happy with the loss to Liverpool than today's win and performance. Even Liverpool are having to scratch out wins, so any win for us at this stage should be seen good one!

I think after that 7-1 win in the cup with lots of youth players, some were hoping to see goals go flying in.

Maybe the lineup including Pedro and Willian both starting had something to do with it as well... Hehe.

I actually woulda went for Christensen, had some key blocks in the second half when we had our back to the wall but both the CB’s were solid. I thought we defended much better as a team as a whole today, although I do appreciate it was Brighton who struggle for goals.

Although the goals against collum seriously contradicts this I actually think we've improved a lot defensively since Norwich in terms of open play defending. We seem to be conceding through either set pieces or one of the few times a team gets through us.

However said set pieces are a big problem and if not dealt with will lead to a lot of dropped points in games we dominate.

Watched live on phone earlier not optimum. Just watched a 15 min highlights twice

think the managers match assessment of dominating from start to finish is spot on

lots of chances created and let’s give Brighton & especially their keeper their due they are well drilled defensively. nice to see the senior players get on the scoreboard  & imo overall a perfect first home win for the manager.

Hope Kante, Emerson  & Rudy come back after the upcoming international break they will improve the quality on the pitch  exciting times ahead and back up to 6th, just 1 point of 3rd so well in the mix after 2 months of Franks management

carefree then !!

Good win! These are the games that we need to win. Hope we can build on this!!

I hope after the next break everyone is fit and this injury hoodoo is over

I know we've been talking about putting the youth players on for years now, but did anyone really expect them to be so much better than our regular first team starters?

Mount is easily miles ahead of Willian, Pedro and Barkley for me.

Tomori is playing sensational right now, much better than Zouma and Luiz was last season. Even ahead of Christensen based on the last few performances.

Abraham our best striker atm and looks miles better than Higuain last year and Morata.

CHO came on and lit the pitch up, miles ahead of Willian and Pedro.

and we still have RLC to come back into the fray, and given how poor Azpi has been I think Reece is ahead of him as well.

Honestly speaking, I think our strongest XI lineup atm looks like this:

Kepa

Reece - Rudi - Tomori - Emerson

Kovacic-Jorginho-RLC

Mount-Abraham-CHO

Players to get rid of:

Barkley, Willian, Pedro, Zouma, Azpi, Alonso (and those are just the ones we have currently in our main squad)

All those words written and all undone because you left out the most important one of them all.

Brighton one goal in five games was the right team to play. Even so they should have scored at least one. So I don't think the defence has improved. My one knock on CHO who I thought looked great in attack was that he didn't track back every time in defence and against a better team that would have exposed Alonso. Tomori's pace is great though at covering for Alonso.

For mine Mason Mount drifted in and out of the game and was less influential than earlier in the season. Willians final ball or end product was mostly garbage but his work effort and value to the team was huge.

Its not that Barkely played badly but Kovacic is just better at that driving midfield role and, in my opinion, has a better understanding with Jorginho. Kovacic made a couple of beautifully weighted passes against the tiring Brighton team

Jorginho my man of the match.

I agree with earlier poster who said this was less enjoyable to watch than some other recent games but still a lot more interesting than some other stuff I've watched into the wee hours.

First PL home win, calling it right here. Unlike the 1 World class and two very good teams we have faced at home already this lot are blooming hopeless on the road, no excuses.

Yup. Mat Ryan is a lucky boy. We should have won that by 6 easily. Out finishing was woeful.

Still we needed that win and a clear sheet to boot. Must do better with out chances.

Man of the match Jorginho for me, closely followed by Willian and Tammy.

Sorry to disagree but Brighton were hopeless.

Well drilled defensively? Looked it with the pen and how many times they gave it away/almost gave it away deep in their own half.

Mat Ryan did little that the Grimsby keeper would have done had the finishing against him been so inept. Pedro should have had a Hatrick. Tammy should have nabbed two, Alonso and Barkley missed absolute sitters.

Had our finishing been even semi decent we would have won 6 or higher and it would have been a fair reflection of the gulf in quality between the teams.

Happy and relieved to won at home finally. I don't think the performance was at the level of last Sunday, but considering we are playing 3 games in 6 days, it was ok. Barkley and Pedro didn't take their chances, thought both were pretty poor. I like Mount as a midfielder, he will do well beside Kante and Jorginho, we have a few good options in CHO, Pullisc in the front 3. The first goal was the opposition's mistake, but our aggressive pressing made it happen, we are more pressing as a team than just a couple of individuals. Jorginho's passing is good, I reckon without the burden of the Sarri ball he's actually has more freedom and taking chances with his passing. Defending set pieces is still a nightmare, they had only one go at us and almost scored.

It was going so well...presume you left him out by mistake but Kante for kovacic and that looks like the first 11 after Xmas. 2 or 3 ‘world class’ players, 1 at left back and 1 or 2 others to keep it healthy and that would be a really good side, even now not just in 2 or 3 years.

I’d keep Pedro in the squad. He’d be better for the young lads than Willian. At least thats the impression I get. Still have Azpi, Christensen, Pulisic in there too.

I would switch Kante over Kovacic

For a first post they don't come much more sensible than that.

If James started playing right back - whose the captain for the remainder of the season? Rudiger? Jorginho?

If Loftus Cheek becomes starter in midfield I'd give it to him. But Rudiger for now if fit.

The young players are doing well, individually they might hit a wall with form. Some have negative views on Willian and Pedro and Jorginho.

These players help the youngsters, it surprises what people think. Jorginho takes the ball in difficult tight situations when we are just going side to side at the back. He beats the press and gets us going forward. Pedro and Willian work so hard up and down the pitch. They may frustrate with final pass or shot but they work hard for the team.

I watched CHO Wednesday and yesterday, in those two appearances he never took anybody on. He either turned to go sideways or passed back to Alonso. People have shown frustration when players do this but not CHO. We need a mix of senior and junior players.

What about the run and the assist to Willian?

I didn't see enough of the game to make an overall fair assessment but note a few other posters complaining about CHO. Yes his transfer request and dithering over contract negotiations mean he will have to earn some respect from the fans, but we do need to give the guy a chance. He is still coming back from a bad injury that could have ruined his career. It still could if it reoccurs. He needs to get up to full match fitness and get his confidence going, this will take more than a couple of appearances as substitute.

Frank was reported to have spoken to him at halftime during the Grimsby match for not following instructions. Frank also spoke in public about Raheem Sterling as an example of how hard work can pay off. I'm getting the impression that CHO has a bit an attitude problem. His celebration after his goal against Grimsby certainly looked over the top. As I say he is coming back from a bad injury and needs time but if he thinks his success is all about him he needs to think again. He will become a successful player within a team and he needs to learn how to become a part of a grown up team. He's not running around with kids anymore and there are defenders out there that will knock him about. He is only 18 years old so there is time for him to learn but I worry about his ability to apply himself to the task at hand. His agent has just put him and the club through a very lengthy and possibly acrimonious negotiation to come out the other side with a £180k a week wage packet for the lad. Callum might be forgiven for thinking that lengthy and acrimonious works.

I have faith in Frank and Jody's ability to handle Cullum's growth and trust them to give him a few home truths when or if it becomes necessary. They and the club appear to have done well to sign him for 5 years and it shows a belief in his potential but he has to learn. I look forward to the time when he is a successful regular on the pitch for club and country so please don't cock it up Callum. Get your head down and do as Frank and Jody say. Frank deserves to be listened to. He knows how hard work improved the trajectory of his career and it would be truly satisfying to see your career mirror or even supersede his.
