Timo Werner

Featured Replies

He’s played his best in a while, great to see him play when he gives his best. Not the best of players, but he’s helped the team open up Soton defence and has fought well. This is the Werner that I’d keep.

I'd give him the spot against Real Madrid.

It would help us more if he actually started for Real Madrid.

Now up to 3 EPL goals this season, all against Southampton. Good time to phone Tottenham and see if they are interested in a swap for Kane........ or Eric Dier

Far more effective when he’s got space to run into, sadly not every team is as stupid as Southampton and they all like to sit back against us.

The trick is to open teams up, and play in a way that negates teams that sit back. We were at Southampton from the very start today, scored early, whcih meant they were unable to sit back. Teams also sit back against Liverpool, and yet, they are  regularly able to open teams up and create the space for the likes of Jota, Saleh and Mane to run into. Ditto city.

Today was brilliant. But our standard slow, sideways, left to right, inch forward, right to left, knock it back, take 3 touches, play it between the CBs, rinse repeat style of play is exactly what teams sitting back want us to do. If we attacked with energy, movement, pace  (like we did today from the start) then perhaps we would drag defenders out of shape more regularly (hence creating space), and score more early goals, which would force teams to go forward, and which in turn creates more space for us to attack.

Werner and Lukaku CAN work in the EPL. They just need the style of play to suit them.

The trick to open team up is to play soton.

You can try to detract from the performance all you like, but for me it was a fantastic Chelsea performance from the start, which never allowed Southampton to sit back deep. We were at them from the start. Fast and direct from the start, getting an early goal, which meant they couldnt sit back from then on.

Yep, faster football today. More tempo, more bite in the midfield and no Jorginho. Any correlation do you think Jim?

We played well but we played soton. The amount of space behind their backline  suited werner to the tee.

Very possibly. Jorgi far too conservative in his passing and slows the game down too much.

There is a world of difference between todays game and one where you face a team that parks the bus. Everyone is going to look "slower" and play more sideways passes in those games. It's to try to move the opposition around and then if you get an opening you got to take it. Like City did v Atletico when they only could muster up a chance or two in 94 minutes.

Today, Southampton were all gung ho about it and we completely picked them apart. In my opinion we are an attacking minded team that goes out trying to score and beat any side but I agree with everyone that says all the right conditions were in place for for example Werner today.

Simone's Athleti are one of the elite sides in the world at playing in that manner. Scrap that, they are probably THE best, so of course chances will be few and far between...but go and have a look how city played. They dint dwell on the ball, take 4 or 5 touches between each pass, as we do when we play EPL teams who "park the bus". Instead they played quick 1 and 2 touch passes and moved the ball quickly, and yes, eventually broke down a stubborn and well organised team.

Likewise, watch Liverpool and how they play teams that "park the bus". They invariably go at it hammer and tongs, 99 miles per hour, playing the game at a quick pace and also passing the ball quickly. There is very little of the slow stagnant football we play.

City move the ball quickly and with precision against such teams. Liverpool play on fast forward with the handbrake off against deep defending teams. Both ways have the impact of pulling defenders out of their comfort zone, and more often than not, lead to a breakthrough goal, at which point the other team have to be more attacking.

By comparison, then go and watch our games against teams who "park the bus". Count how many touches Azpi, Kante, our CBs, Jorgi etc all have between passes. It is not uncommon for 3, 4 or 5 touches, before making that oh so difficult 3 yrd sideways pass. The way we inch our way forward at a snails pace, then retreat over and over again is exactly what defenders love. They can sit deep, not get pulled out of position and hit us on the counter....Thats a long way of saying we approach these games with a very different approach to Liverpool and City. Today we didnt give S'hampton a chance. We were at them from the start, playing quickly, and pulling them all over the pitch.

He’s obviously still a very good striker only if we play to his strength. Without space he’s useless.

If he joined Liverpool instead, I wouldn’t be surprised if his transfer value is around 100m by now.

Our play style doesn’t suit him and I think it’s best for both parties to sell him. He can have a successful career elsewhere and we can use the money for a player better suited to Tuchel’s system.

We shouldn't sell him, I'm hoping this performance wakes him up as he looked far more promising.

I don't think he needs space necessarily, his other efforts that hit the post & bar where in packed areas. We just need to provide him with the service and play more attacking / forward passes.

I believe he would be on their bench behind Mane, Salah, Jota, Diaz and probably Firmino. He misses too many chances for Klopp to make him a first choice, which is why he pulled out of a deal to sign Timo and went with Jota the same summer for more or less the same price.

Sure he got 2 against the only PL team he scores against but we are talking about him starting against Real Madrid now. Do we believe Real will gift him 6 good to great chances to score? No way, he may get 1 and it will be finished like that header at the open goal, missed.

We need to win at least 2v0 to stay in it....

Didn't he score for us against Real last season? In a Champions League Semi final? In a 2v0 win?

Lol yeah one even Lukaku could not miss.

It will come, the little jinks and footwork he showed when he hit the post for Havz goal, were sublime, confidence is key for him to perform….

Maybe but it won't be here imo. A fresh start may see him find his RBL form again.

The one thing that sets Pep and Klopps teams apart from us is that they're so much better at dismantling low blocks. If Werner played for either of them he could easilu score double figures a season

I wish Klopp had signed him and we managed to steal Jota instead with all the hindsight 2020...
