I wasn't really convinced by James or Chilwell as pure wide players in the back 3/5 but since they've been given licence to drift in they've both hit another level offensively and that's even before you bring the numbers in the play. 

Few weeks ago I was ruing the fact we missed out in Hakimi and lost Livramento, now not so much.

I agree with you but which top opponents have we not been tested against? West Ham and Brighton?

Some say City is playing similar inverted fb, nah it is very2 different. Essentially, with us wb willl become the two 10 whereas in city case they become one dm and one cb. And the two cm become 10.

The main reason being a lack of attention on details and lack of quality in the discourse at the start of the Guardiola era. At Barcelona’s legendary 6-2 win against Real Madrid, the so-called false Nine was exactly the kind of tinkering that would have received backlash a few years later in games lost or drawn. The perhaps even more legendary 5-0 two years later involved a back three build up with Abidal staying deeper, a box-midfield in the center (with Xavi and Busquets at its base, behind Messi and Iniesta) and an asymmetry in the last line with Villa, Pedro and Dani Alves (which bores a heavy similarity to his Manchester City 2021).

Guardiola used this asymmetrical setup what you like so much already in Barcelona. But this is not really an invention from Pep. It was invented by Johan Cruyff.

Nothing has been tweaked really, it's just our decisionmaking as a group has been better.

Absolutely brilliant manager. So many good qualities but I can't remember any other manager at this club being as good as utilizing his full squad and getting a tune out of damn near everyone. Obviously there is a difference in quality between players but he's just tremendous at giving everyone a chance to impress and it's paying off big time so far this season.

Prime Lennox Lewis was only a foreshadowing of Tuchel, he's not stopping till he wins it all.

 

 

He could be our Klopp....brilliant manager but it is not in Chelsea's DNA to keep a manager for several years.

Made the right change again, taking Kante ( who wasn't bad) off for a more attack minded RLC made the difference straight away. In the past, managers tend to be hesitant when taking the likes of Kante off, not for Tuchel, called it as it is. Even in the glory days of Jose, our bench players were never that great, now we could miss 3-4 big players and put on the subs, and same outcome.

I think Roman would have sacked Klopp last year. This is true.

We are lucky to have him, and it just fits for both parties.  Hope he stays for years to come.  When you look at the average age of our team and the renewed willingness to invest, well, the future looks bright.  Definitely the third chapter under Roman that we all discussed (First CL, years in between, Second CL).

 

Ah flip, just seen our game at Leicester, after this next international break, has the Saturday lunch kick off again. How do we keep getting that slot after the break? 

TT will need to wake the players up for that won, is not a gimme like Norwich.

I really believe the future outlook is as positive as it's ever been at this club. For several reasons but we have a fantastic manager who's the perfect fit as Chelsea-manager (in my opinion) and we've got one of the very best academies in the world right now. About six academy products in or around our XI and we have a manager who's shown he's prepared to give youngsters a chance to prove themselves at the highest level so I expect to see more academy lads integrated in the future. Perhaps Livramento and Gallagher especially as they are already shining in the EPL but also the likes of Levi Colwill who's been very impressive in the Championship at 18 years of age.

Not for me today. He put out a tactic that worked. We were excellent to watch, forward link up play with midfield and wingbacks was great. 

Let down by really poor finishing due to the November curse striking again.

Agreed. The only thing I think he got wrong was taking Barkley off who I thought was having a good game. Everything else was fine. He had us controlling the game from start to finish. He coached a 4-0 win but his team somehow delievered a 1-1 draw.

Yeah hard to be critical. A lapse of concentration at the end and some poor finishing cost us.

Have to say I am getting some Tinkerman vibes. Yes he uses the whole squad but sometimes you've got to let the players in form continue on. 

Went a bit too far with Barkley starting, but had Havertz tapped that ball in ( or a lucky block from the defender), Tuchel be looking like a genius again.  We will play 55-60 games a season, so it's natural he's taking a bit of a gamble in game like this. Players should definitely cop most of the game, we only had to defend a couple of times, and somehow managed to f* up completely.

I can see why you say that, and a few feels Barkley really played well. I felt he lacked the end product Ziyech has started to deliver.

Also I don't think he tinkered enough with the 3cbs, and that might be why 2 of them switched off. No reason Trev did not play one of these games.

Obviously we miss some players but our squad is so good that even with some players missing we should be able to win games against the lower-end teams. Tuchel's staring lineup was good and we started the game very well, for the first 15 minutes we were putting up crosses and Burnley couldn't breathe, the first half finished with Burnely having 26% possession so clearly everything was going well.

But going forward our attackers need to put up more shots on target, this is something that a top team must accomplish. Having 70% possession and 14 corners but only 4 shots on target is simply too low and there is no excuse for that.

Scoring one simple tap in is not starting to deliver (unless you’re Werner - then it’s a miracle ).

Its funny you say that because for me I understood why Christensen played today instead of Dave. That extra height is important against Burnley (ironic of course that he lost his man from an aerial ball when we cocneded).

I do agree with you on Barkley. Played one of his better games but you just feel like a bit of continuity would have helped us. Again minor criticism as we did well today.

Would have lost nothing height wise had Trev played. He probably scores the header AC missed.

Though in a way glad he did not play as he would be being blamed for us letting the goal in.

Overall we escaped the worst outcome of the week. 

Hope none of the lads play the  internationals and are just warming the bench. I hope we don't have training injuries either

First International break 1 point clear. Next one 3 points clear. The man knows how to get the business done. It's not really him that I question this season, as far as I can see the main issue holding us back from really asserting ourselves as the best team in the world is our finishing.

Luckily for us we're still not even a quarter of the way through this season with 5 trophies still to play for. Sounds like plenty of time for our players to learn how to finish ruthlessly.
