If they can't make their (already) shady economics work with De Jong's astronomous salary of 500k a week, they have to sell. Apparently Chelsea is preferred from the two English clubs. I still don't fully understand why we would want to sign him..he is talented for sure but is he someone that could transform our game...? An upgrade to Jorginho would be a prime Fabregas. A player that truly can make a pin point pass. For me De Jong is not that. We don't actually need midfield motors, I think we need a player that can find our attackers with great passes. Locatelli?

He's not keen to move even in a world cup year, so doubt we could tempt him. If Barca urgently need to unload players from their wage bill, why don't we try with a cheeky bid for Pedri. Only 19, but real quality and fits with our future proofing.
August 8, 20223 yr Laporta saying that he wants to stay. It could tactics for get his money but seems pointless signing a player that doesn’t want to be here. I would avoid him unless he really wants the move.

No one is paying him 500k/week unless PSG somehow is in for him. The stories go that he is asked to take a major paycut to continue at Barcelona. Be it halving it he would still make something we would offer him (around 250k/week, also taxing and currency has to be taken into consideration) and maybe he still prefers Barcelona. It is worrying times for them and still most exciting times in years with Xavi in helm and new brilliant players coming in (Lewa and Raphinha for example). If I had to guess I say he is staying.

August 8, 20223 yr Flat out lies from barca haha. Who takes over a football club and doesnt look into the finances hahahahahaaaaa Yeah the last lot put them all on huge contracts with money seemingly coming froma secret tree out the back and this lot have rocked up and are trying to scare players into taking smaller contracts using the fear of court to force it Club should be banned from making signings for a couple seasons As bad as it gets IMO
August 8, 20223 yr Chelsea are ready to pay the full transfer fee and cover Frenkie De Jong's current deferred salary with FC Barcelona. @David_Ornstein The Athletic

I'd happily pay 50m for De Jong. But I wouldn't take him on a free if we had to pay his deferred salary. It's just semantics but the idea of paying wages Barca promised their players is nauseating.

And the bit that is being missed i think is that they need to get him off the books because his wages going forwards are astronomical. In addition to the signing on fee and the 17m of back wages, how much are we going to pay this bloke if we get him. This is all a Spanish soap opera and they will survivie. The whole place is bent so they will make sure they survive. Fck em. Throw Alonso into the pot...Cash on Delivery! then leave them to it. They'll survive. There are other targets. I notice that Man City and Newcastle, two of the richest clubs in the world have had no dealings with these shysters at all. They won't get drawn into this old bollox
August 8, 20223 yr The fact UEFA or La Liga hasn't stepped in top stop Barca spending money on signings until they get their finances in check is completely laughable. Disgusting club and i can't wait for the day they're relegated a couple of divisions or liquidated.

De Jong would be a gamechanging signing.

I agree whole heartedly. But the precedent of paying the wages Barca owe after what's happened this summer paints the club in a terrible light. We need De Jong. But they need to sell him more. We have all the leverage here we shouldn't be offering them big money and covering his wages.

In the end whether we pay for DeJong or not Barca are most likely going to swindle their way out of this. So like you say let’s concentrate on ourselves and what’s best for us and ignore Barcelona.
August 8, 20223 yr So elements of criminality = They offered him too much in wages and now they can't afford it. Barca are a total joke.
August 8, 20223 yr Author Ornsteins tweet only says we will pay it says nothing about what de Jong wants
August 8, 20223 yr Surely if there was any criminality it was from Barcelona themselves? A bit like a serial killer threatening to call the police to report a crime while still wearing his previous victim's skin. They operate like a cartel and Uefa are just as culpable for not checking them on this nonsense.
August 8, 20223 yr “ Spanish radio claim Barcelona jointly set-up a holdings company to which it paid €150m of its own money to buy its own assets (to inflate value of sale). La Liga rejected it as not "new" money. Barça must now pay €37.5m tax on this payment.” Looking more and more dodgy.
