I’m really confused about Man Utd playing Betis tonight, didn’t they play Barca just a couple of weeks ago? Aren’t Europa usually at the same stage as champions league?

The teams that get knocked out of the champions league (barca in this instance) and the teams that finish 2nd in their Europa League groups (United) play in a play off round before the round of 16. I think after this round of EL then the EL and CL will be at the same stage until the final.

With what money? & you do know Levy is holding the purse strings?

They have actually spent a decent amount of money backing Conte but as usual it is never enough. They do have Porro, Richarlison, Bissouma, Spence, Kulusevski, Sarr, Bentacur, Romero to build around. All they need is a manager willing to play these players.

I don't think many realise how dire Spurs financial situation is. They have a debt that exceeds Barcelona's with around half the revenue to service it. The only media rights they can sell are for another season-review DVD.

The stadium debt is an albatross around their neck. If the EPL brings it similar FFP rules to La Liga, or Spurs underachieve and miss out on CL a few more years, they are f**ked.

A spurs fan walks past a shop and sees a video called "Tottenham - the glory years" for sale for 100. He asks the assistant "Why is it so expensive?" She says " The video's only a tenner, but the Betamax video player costs 90!"

Couldn't think of anywhere else to post this. This Saturday's MOTD will have no pundits. Will only be showing highlights. Have to confess that I won't miss listening to the pundits. Would rather watch more highlights.

It's taken Linekar making a stand to get the show I wanted all along.

I actually agree with his point, but I don't like listening to pundits

Best thing to ever happen to MOTD, I may tune in for once. This is how it should be every week. Just show me the highlights and stop throwing away licence fee money on useless twats like Lineker and co.

Can nobody just wipe this stain of a club from existence?

Let's be honest, we know all too well how fixed the games were.

I suspect that Barcelona will be issued with paltry fine and told not to do it again. I'm a cynical bastard. Sign of old age.

On those occasions when I do watch MOTD I tend to switch over when the pundits are speaking. I appreciate it's a game of opinions but would rather watch more highlights. If watching a live game on TV I usually switch over when pundits are spouting off during half-time.

Wasn’t that Fisherman/ ‘Fisher-them’ comment made on The One Show?, BBC have been a platform for ‘woke’ culture, hardly impartial, at least the pendulum is swinging the other way a bit.

Gary Lineker is a multi-millionaire who signed a contract agreeing to particular guidelines / codes of conduct and has subsequently decided talking about football isn’t enough, don’t get the uproar; let the chips fall where they may. Would like to see more Chelsea faces involved with MOTD & their International coverage. Drogba would make a great presenter but it’s probably a bit beneath him, Ballon d’or host is quite a regal position.

While true that the BBC have many presenters and likely executives that lean left in their politics, Political correctness or in this case a gender pronoun comment don't compare to one of the top earners and most well known and watched presenters publicly comparing the current government to Nazis.

(Don't remember hundreds of thousands of people trying to illegally enter Nazi Germany and the ensuing horrible foreign policy - they must not have put that bit in World at War.)

I'm a lowly civil servant in France, if I made a comment of that nature in public I'd be sacked. Linekar is one of the most privileged people in the country and it feels to me like he wants to have his cake and eat it.

It opens a larger debate about speaking truth to power that's for sure...

On the news this morning it was announced that some of the BBC commentators won't be working and some players won't be interviewed in solidarity with Lineker. So we could end up with just watching games with no commentators and punditry. A bit like being at a match where we can discuss the game with those around us or in the pub afterwards or people watching the match at home and discussing with those with them or on forums like this. Would be lovely if all games could be watched without commentators and pundits. Sadly, can't see that happening. A couple of questions:

1. Will commentators and pundits of other sports shown on the BBC follow suit in solidarity?

2. Will commentators and pundits on other broadcasters e.g. Sky and BT refuse to commentate and express views  on football in support of Lineker? Possibly not or they may be deemed as in breach of contract.

@Term_X as you say, Lineker signed a contract and agreed to guidelines. I worked in the Civil Service in the U.K. and had to abide by certain rules and wasn't allowed to commentate publicly on Government policies especially around the time of a General Election. Such guidelines apply in both the public and private sectors.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the long and short terms. As for coverage of football would it be that great a loss if there was no punditry or commentary? As for political impartiality in the BBC could be a nightmare as some believe it is right-wing and others say it is left-wing. Guess that comes down to definitions of left and right.

What's kind of depressing is that this has become the conversation rather than the suffering of many people trying to find sanctuary and a better life.

Agree. It's on the front page of many papers in the UK. Was also the lead headline on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 this morning. There are far more important things in life than football.
