With Kroos, Modric, Bellingham, Tchouameni, Camavinga, and Valverde all jockeying for position in Real's midfield, if we belive that Santos really does have elite level potential (and most of us do) then why don't we put him out for a PL level loan for a year and why don't we try to get a Tchouameni or Camavinga on a year loan form Real with no option or obligation.

Keep our 100m in our pocket (or better still specd it elsewhere), see where Santos is this time next year and see what Brighton's relationship with their player is like then.

Loving this line of thought

No matter how much money we have, it is madness to pay £70m for a player who has one good season, was discovered in the manner some of the potential players we have bought have been and is being used by his club as a trump card to undervalue and sign our player to our economical detriment. Talk less of the £100m they are demanding.

I'm not sure if it's what Pochettino wants or the club but even if it's a manager acquisition, I think this is the type of situations the manager should be overruled.

My two pence. I know he's a fan of so many who think Chelsea cannot play any kind of competitive football without him in the team but I'd rather have Santos stay in the team and be developed than spunk such a huge sum on him.

So we can’t get our top target this transfer window - it happens

I’d prefer a cheap gamble on Kalvin Phillips unless he’d completely crocked, keep Santos and Conor and either keep our money for the next midfield target or go all out on a goalkeeper instead

Caicedo might be special, but Brighton are really hard to deal with and if they wont accept our sensible bids - move along

I still think Amrabat is the solution.  Has a decent amount of experience and low risk he's rumoured to be valued at less than £30m.  Problem is by the time we realise the Caicedo deal is dead in the water he'll probably be playing for Man Utd.

Only wants a move to La Liga doesn't he?

Don't know only heard Man Utd and Liverpool rumours.  Real and Barca don't seem to be interested so any one else bar Atletico are a massive down grade especially in wages.

Not really about Caicedo but  the price of talent isn’t linear. What I mean is that you can pay a big premium maybe 30-40-50% for a player that is only 5-10%. “better”

you want to win you have to have the best players or at least the best team. And even if you win by only 1 point in 85 over the season it’s worth a lot more in every way than coming second.

We thought the same of the chap that went to Tottenham, Bissouma.

Loads of teams were in for him and it looked like a coup. Turns out it wasn't.

If Caicedo isn't willing to put in a transfer request and rock the boat at this point, espacially after the stink he raised for Arsenal mid season, then he simply isn't worth the hassle.

Let Brighton stew over the 80+ million for a player they bought for peanuts and their weirdo wet dreams of Levi.

Its time to look elsewhere.

I thought the same of Cucurella last year. He looked genuinely fantastic.

Maybe there are stats out there that say otherwise and that I was duped, and that Caicedo is demonstrably fantastic. It doesn't change the fact that Brighton are being sweaty weirdos.

I still think Bissouma is a good footballer. Ask any Spurs fan and they will tell you they are still excited about Bissouma and feel as if he is a new signing. Conte's dead football and reluctance to play him didn't do him any good.

Caicedo's metrics are also way more significant compared to Bissouma at Brighton. I'm backing the recruitment team on this one and wish we would just pay up.

Like i said above though, thsi is what everyone was saying about Wersley Fofana and that is starting to look like 75m down the swannee. There have to be limits.

If this is guy is genuinely the best midfielder in his position bar none, why are we the only ones interested. I do believe that he is quality, but clearly everybody else can see he is not worth the money being quoted. Not for one seaon, great as it was. And lets not forget he spent a fair amount of that time playing out of posiiton as well. didn't he?

You can't blame Boehly/Tuchel's summer and pin it on our recruitment team though. (Even though its more probable than not Fofana can still come good). Matt Law stated Caicedo already had his mind up on Chelsea, hence why he cooled down the Liverpool and United interest.

This is honestly the same argument we had 6 months ago when people didn't want Enzo for his lack of experience and he proved everyone wrong. Trust the recruitment team.

Fine if he had cost £40m, but for what we paid, personally I still think Fernandez has as much to prove as anyone else ! Probably alone in that perspective 🙂

There were talks of him flopping or him not coping to the Premier League. He instantly became one of the most progressive passers despite being here for almost half a season and managed by two clowns.

Hey come on now. Fair enough if you don't rate Lamps as a manager, his stock there has fallen significantly, however some respect for an all time club legend please.

Please. Lampard the player is my favorite footballer of all time and largely the reason I started supporting this club back in 2005. Lampard the manager is one of the most most arrogant, despite being utterly clueless, individuals I've ever seen.

I separate the two.

For me referring to Lamps as a clown is disrespectful. Separate the two careers he has had/is having is fine, but he is the same person and twice came to help us as best he could when we were in difficult positions.

The man in any context deserves our respect.

Mate you should know by now I have no qualms calling a spade a spade. Lampard for me is one of the most diabolical and clueless managers I've ever had the displeasure of witnessing that didn't involve leftover Sarri residue. Love the bloke but its true. Management clearly isn't for him.

It's an internet forum. Someone is bar to say something you don't like. Much like as I find your weekly dose of pessimistic views on how this club is run, or how we'll always get the sh*t end of the stick, incredibly annoying and tedious. Respect the club you support.

I dont disagree with your assessment of Lampard as a manager, how you describe his ability as such here is perfectly fine. Calling him a clown I take issue with.

Far as the second bit goes all well and good, you ain't the only one to find me annoying and tedious. I do however respect the club, these owners are custodians of the club, they are not the club. People like Lamps, they are Chelsea FC, as are other Legends, as are the fans. As such I show them they respect due.

We have both made our points here, and you gave @Sexyfootballa good chuckle as a bonus.  let's not flog the dead horse anymore and allow the thread to return to the daily none updates around Caicedo.

Lets get this deal done Brighton know we need this player and we all know he's a big part of our plans. We are talking about 10/15 mil. which is peanuts to our owners We are putting a proper team together and we will be the big winners in the end not Brighton. We need to do the deal and move on to our next targets

Biggest clown here is Caceido's agent, signing up an unhappy player to a 5 year, £60kpw contract with no release clause. He makes Charlie Kane look like Mino Raiola.

Did seem a short term money grab, maybe the agent fee was very handsome.

Is it 10 to 15mill? Last I read are last offer was 70mill and Brighton want 100mill or Colwill included.

Well when you go and find out what he's pocketed from the deal and what he stands to gain from the next big money move then maybe you won't call him a clown as much as you might his principal.
