Enzo Fernandez - Officially a Blue!

Never understood this Chalobah as a DM argument.

The tactical discipline, technical ability  and awareness needs to be at a top level to play in this role. Chalobah playing DM at a bottom half club in France doesn’t justify him being good enough to play. Completely different ball game being a successful DM in the Prem, let alone at a top club.

Would not know until he had a run of games there. Is worth trying imo, Trev is the type of personality we need in the team.

I think it’s telling that three managers not once contemplated it.

This guy, along with the alleged great leader Thiago Silva, really gets away with doing absolutely nothing useful in four out of five games. As if pretending and using your will power to perceive him as great actually would change the reality of him performing as a very, very meh footballer.

He has some skill and some vision, and we all know that sometimes it can take 18 months or so for young players to adapt to a new league, so I wouldn't rule out that he'll be good for you eventually.

However, spending that money on him rather than say Moises Caicedo looks like another piece of mad business. Really feels like the Kleberson scenario where someone has a good World Cup and you buy the player just because of that.

We should have spent the money on a ST. Enzo is good, but we should have focused on bringing in a goalscorer. Enzo is the epitome of luxury, expensive luxury. We should have focused on bringing in a CM of his mould after Fabregas left, not only in summer.

Lampard managing Enzo is the equivalent of a man driving a Turbo Porsche but not knowing how to drive manual. Imagine had SAF instructed Scholes to do Carrick's role. That is what we are seeing right now.

The ST position is a delicate one. We of all fans should know that. Bar the fact there was no Top ST available in January, we don't have a system or structure in place. Much like the manager, we can't get this signing wrong. Our history has been cruel to us in that matter.

We were linked to strikers, even Vlahovic. I think it would have made sense. Letting Giroud go was a mistake. Even if he was to have got us 10 goals this season it would have been better than zilch and having Auba or Fofana.

I don't see the hype, but the whole team is sh*t right now. It's completely fair to judge players professionalism, right now, but all else is null and void.

At this point in the rut, I'm solely looking at effort and energy...of which there appears to be nearly none.

I agree which is why our issues as a club pre-dates Boehly.

We currently don't have the midfield to cater any ST. Nor do we have any structure in how we want to play.

I think Enzo is going through a rough patch, the same as most of the team, but his price is never going to be justified unless he's adding double figure assists and goals every season for the next 5/6 seasons which is unlikely.

Playing as DM in this team? Keep dreaming

Giroud only managed to hit 11 Serie A goals last season & hasn’t hit 10 this season. Fans keep forgetting his legs were gone and he struggled with the pace of the league. Aubameyang as crap as he has been is a much better player presently, but his legs are gone also.

We would never have been option in the summer, it was a once in a lifetime deal. Players with his profile don’t come around often;  if you ask most opposition fans which 1 player in our team they would like on their team, 9 out of 10 would go for Enzo. He is currently been used as a “6” when ideally he should be playing as a LCM, it’s like buying a Ferrari & using it off road.

I am left wondering if he is one of the players the Atletic "insiders" said regret signing up with us.

Almost certainly. He's a world-cup winners with the world at his feet, and he's now going on 7 game losing runs and not even finishing top half of the league. Him and Mudryk I suspect would very much like to undo their decisions.

Weird comparison - who do you think did "Carrick's role" before Michael Carrick?

Fernandes is a good player but he is not immune to criticism. He needs to do a lot more defensive work, whether he is playing as a DM or not. Modern midfield legends like Modric, Kroos, Xavi, Iniesta never shied away from the tackle or getting their pressing hands dirty. Enzo was such a talent in the World Cup because he provided graft as well as class, and if he loses the former he will  never be the player he can be.
