Speaking of Sterling this should be his make it or break it season.

Make it, break it or fake it. It'll be one of the three. A little more determination and effort would be a good start.

None of the above. Sterling never had anything but hype that the Man City machine churned out for him.

He has made a lot of money by being the English Timo, so fair play to him.

So a  wide player with 91 premier league goals before Chelsea and no doubt heaps of assists  in ever had anything  but “hype”.   Drogba only scored 102. If you mean he;s passed it now then perhaps but I’d still strongly disagree.

Bad take, he's been one of the most consistently vilified players in the league and in no small part due to his race.

Despite this, he's been a top 5 player in this league for nearly a decade, having starred alongside the likes of Bale, Suarez, Hazard etc. over the years. Easily one of the most technically gifted players England has produced.

My opinion on Sterling has zero to do with the color of his skin.

Fair enough Oz, I respect your opinion.

It’s really what the numbers show not my opinion. I don’t think you can get in the Liverpool and then man city teams and survive for a decade without being the real deal. He sure does have a lot of minutes in the legs and may not have it anymore. That is hard to know, but that he did have it is a matter of record.

Of course, I'm referring to his treatment by the media, who unfortunately have targeted him for being a Black man from a working-class background.

If this were true, and in no way am I denying it, its odd the Sterling would be singled out and targeted, considering that black men from working class backgrounds are well represented in football and are very well represented in inner city academies. It is strange why Sterling would the one, or the main one vilified.

As a player, although I have never rated him due to his deficiencies in technical skill and his lazy, ineffectual attitude off the ball, it is undeniable that he has maximised his potential at what he is good at and if we played an overloading style of football I am sure he would continue to pop up at the back post to score a number of goals.

Sadly the Chelsea of last season was a team of luxury players with hardly any workers, hence why he melded into the background, although still ended up top scorer, I believe.

If Pochettino can instil a modicum of work ethic into him, Sterling could be that seasoned pro the attacking group need to have around.

You don't last years under Pep if that's the case, even Messi had to do the hard yards under his management.

What happened:
2018 Incident
Interview about the Chelsea incident in 2020
Article about the Chelsea incident from 2022
Racist abuse from Hungary fans, 2020
Sterling calls out English media double standards for black public figures

Why it happened:

https://andscape.com/features/raheem-sterling-manchester-city-chelsea-and-the-racist-media-coverage-of-black-athletes/

Sterling was targeted for the same reason that, despite having many Black players in our pantheon of club greats, we have a history of fans engaging in racist abuse i.e people's racism is enabled by the way media frames public discourse around people of colour.

For that reason, I think it's illogical to suggest Sterling is the product of some sort of 'hype machine' when media has in fact been biased against him in the worst, most base way.

Chelsea fans targeted Sterling that day because he did a pretty bad foul on David luiz (I think him) in front of the MHL. It wasn't to do with his race. One man might have called him a racist slur, but I don't think it's fair to say Chelsea fans targeted him because of his race.

Has he been treated worse by the press because of his race? Yes. But let's not go down this rabbit hole that we singled him out because he was black. He kicked one of our players, the fans reacted.

I think he's one of the most overrated players in the last 10 years. I never saw what he offered city, consistently sh*t for england and Pep spent 100m to replace him with a much more effective player in grealish. If he's one of the best players in England then no one's spending 100m on a replacement when he's still in his 20s.

Its more likely he was targeted for having the temerity to leave cuddly lovely salt of the earth Liverpool to go to evil oil villains Man City to win trophies.

This thread is not about sterling. I don’t hold a torch for the lad, but I can recall when he first started for Liverpuddle, he instantly caught the eye playing on the right and starting deep. He is a good player  And as for saying he has always been sh*it for England…Really. I can’t remember which World Cup, I think it was Brazil, for 2-3 games he carried the English forward line. Certainly way better for England than mount. Not even close.

his goal scoring for Man city was about the same as Hazard for Chelsea, maybe even better.

you guys who don’t like him have high standards. Like I say I look at the stats but I also use my eyes. Hazards the better player no doubt, but how many hazards are there.

Pep is always saying about how you have to keep refreshing to be succesful, between the first title to now only KDB and Ederson have been untouchables throughout.

My gripe was someone saying he's a top 5 player in the league for a decade. Peps not spending 100m to replace a top 5 player. Peps not replacing someone who is on Hazards level as someone else said.

That's why I am quite comfortable saying he's one of the most overrated footballers in the last decade. People throw around praise for him like he's a generational talent and I've never seen it for england or city and definitely not for us.

Jackson on the other hand...let's see!

The thing is, that guy didn't even say anything racist. He called him a manc c**t, clear as day. You don't need to be an expert lip reader to see that. The media jumped on it because they, alongside the politicians, are absolutely obsessed with causing as much racial division as possible.

That mans life was ruined because of this. He had his home and even where he works plastered all over the rags, social media and tv and he was hung out to dry by the club because the club didn't have the balls to stand up against media pressure.

Looks so comfortable coming deep to start play. Obviously against league 2 opposition but looks a good fit for a Pochettino striker. Wingers running off him is gonna be huge this season, Mudryk, Sterling and Madueke could really thrive.

"Lazy... ineffectual attitude off the ball, install work ethic..." Mate, where have you been for the last 10 years. You don't get to play for Manchester City or Pep guadiola if you don't have work ethic, skill, off the ball attributes. The only thing you can say about Sterling is that we signed a player at odds with our playing system. then we sacked the "genius manager" who signed said player for a system who didnt fit in.
