Nicolas Jackson - striker

That attack would be a strong candiate for being the worst we've had in about 3 decades.

If Nico and Nkunku can score like they did last season though, we're looking at 25+ goals between them only which would be more than the 4 top scorers from last season all put together.

I'd be an improvement over Aubameyang and I'm 61 with two metal knees and a metal hip.

Now you're just flirting with me 🥰

Anyway, we've also signed a Diego Moreira and an Alex Matos, both 18. Surely one or two from Kindergarten Cobham will turn into something useful?

Signing like Jackson just tells you we are seriously bringing the age profile down. He looks like the striker we bought to be the starter.

He's basically played a good month in La Liga. That tells you how inexperienced he is. Was a good month for him naturally as Chelsea came knocking.

Are we trying to bring it down from 23 to 20 lol? Take out Silva and we have a handful of starters over 25, let alone 30!

This is a bit of a weird comparison but if there was a player I would compare Nicolas Jackson to at this stage of his careeer, it would be Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Jackson hasn't been a great goalscorer historically, but there's a lot more to his game. He is a bona fide target man (unlike Lukaku or Havertz) and always seems to be able to make space for himself. He's always been a promising player, but the back-end of last season showed he can add goals to his game and that has catapulted him into an entirely different stratosphere.

I've watched a lot of Villarreal this season and it should be said that most teams in La Liga defend deep against them. Jackson is no passenger in the build-up and is very effective at dropping deep to start attacks in possession. What he's added to his game is finishing counter-attacks, which adds another dimension to his play.

Worst-case scenario, I think we have signed a Firmino-type striker who can drop deep and play-make for other forwards, which is useful with Sterling, Nkunku, Broja and Mudryk in the team. Best case scenario, if he keeps up the goalscoring, we've found a new Benzema or Kane.

Could also be ..

Nkunku Lukaku Sterling ..

For years, people on this forum have asked why we spend big money on finished articles, and why we don't "do a porto" and buy younger players before they have been polished into diamonds.

It seems that the new regime is trying to do that.

Will it work? I don't know, time will tell. It seems unlikely that all of the new players will turn into superstar world beaters. Some might prove to be amazing like my beautiful boy Timo. Others might end up awful like Bambi on ice Tammy.

But....

...when you look at the dross we have played for a number of years, and how badly the signings of big names have damaged us recently, then I am so happy to be giving a new process a chance to see how it goes.

I hope many of our fans give these unproven youngsters the time and space to imbed and adjust - and not jump in their back like they did with potter.

Surely you're not STILL trying to defend Potter LOL

You must be highly confused by the complete lack of big clubs fighting each other to appoint Graham as their next manager ... 🙂

We didn't even consider him for the Strasbourg job, which has gone to Patrick Vieira.

Not at all - I said for a long time that Potter wasn’t doing a good enough job.

But the way way out “fans” turned the place into a toxic mess was disgraceful. With fans like that, who needs enemies?

We can only hope and dream, and pray that he is handled and developed properly, but he reminds both myself and my daughter in his style of play, as a young Drogba. Oh if only it comes true.

People can moan but besides Harry Kane what striker is there right now? The chances of us getting Kane aren't strong either even though I would take him in a heartbeat. }

Besides that we could go in for that destined flop at Napoli and spunk about 100 odd million on strikers in the Serie A, because that sounds like a great idea doesn't it?

This is the best we can hope for really, I've not seen much of Nicholas Jackson but I'm hoping our recruitment team has a plan in mind. When Drogba wasn't scoring, other players were, I don't think Drogs was the most prolific striker, but he did have a sweet knack for bringing other players into the game. We could desperately do with that, we need everyone scoring and taking their chances more, not just one man.

Pot kettle black, could say the exact same thing with you lot and Tuchel.

Obviously, there were accounts like "TimesUpPotter" which was over the top, but I wasn't optimistic about a bloke who did f**k all in his managerial career and was on a silly contract.  I'm optimistic about Pochettino, but I understand why some fans aren't, you should have the same energy.

That should be fair enough. The worry is and should be that if it fails, which is a very live possibility we will not be among the best teams in the league anymore and will be heading back to the days when we were repeatedly spanked by the likes of United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

And with the first "young and unproven" project (Potter) being a spectacular failure one should also be able to understand why some are worried about it. Especially when proven players like Kante, Mount, Jorginho and Kovacic are going out the door with more to follow.

Jackson wasn't that cheap btw, Liverpool landed one of the best young midfielders in the league for the same fee. And apparently we have decided to bet on Kepa because we don't have money for a decent goalkeeper so why not trust D.Fofana and Broja who we already have and who are both about as proven as Jackson and do something about a position where we can significantly improve on instead?

What profile do we need?

A couple seasons ago I felt we'd unearthed the right profile, unfortunately we sold him to Roma 🤷‍♀️

In all seriousness though, there are goals in our side that can be unlocked by a solid striker. Doesnt mean Jackson/Broja/Whoever need to be scoring 20+ to be successful. Obviously that'd be great, but a striker who can hold the ball up and keep defenders honest will free up space for the likes of Sterling and Nkunku to exploit

Arsenal had goals spread around the team . 15, 15, 14, 11  from 4 players.

As you say, hopefully others can start scoring as well as a CF

I mean that would be fair enough if many of our "proven" projects didn't backfire just as spectacularly (Lukaku, Auba, Kouli, Saul from the last two years alone).

And you mention Mount being a proven commodity, why is that? Because Lampard decided to bet on him over the more 'proven' Barkley. Even Kova to an extent was unproven as let's be honest, his contributions to Madrid (and Croatia at that point) were a mere one step up from a back up keeper.

That said i would like a more older head in the midfield to go with Enzo/Caicedo but it's not the risk free strategy you're portraying it as either.

Older head is probably seen as Nkunku

Yes, it is. You'll realize soon enough if we don't do something about it.

We've literally had multiple examples in the last two summers alone that prove otherwise, but whatever fits your narrative.
