Jamie Gittens joins Chelsea

Not fussed on this signing at all and was very much against it.

Paid a bomb for an average prospect. Think of all of the wonderkids who have come from Dortmund over the years, plenty have flopped who looked far better than Gittens, no idea why we paid such an absurd sum on him, I'm not even convinced he's on the same level as Madueke.

I haven’t seen enough of Gittens to make a proper judgement on him yet. However if he is the same level as Madueke I don’t really get the criticism, palmer, estevao and Neto all favour the right hand side and no one was naturally a LW so if we have just got a player on Maduekes level on the left then it gives the squad more balance.

No need to worry. A hatrick against a struggling Wolves and bingo, a profit next summer. I think we sometimes forget the primary aim of these signings.

Its not like we paid 30M for him though... For what we paid, he should be an instant impact. To make profit on him he'd have to hit some insane form.

Like I said, it will be a very frustrating experience at the start with Gittens.

We paid for potential with Gittens which he has lots of but he is not ready to start week in week out. It makes sense why the club is going for a more "experienced" player in Garnacho even if I don't particularly rate him that highly he is still better than current Gittens.

That's true, I forgot he was around 50 million. He'll need a bit more than one hattrick for us to turn a profit.

I hope you're right that he will realise his potential in time, but 50 million seems quite a lot to pay for potential. Feels comparatively like we really got a bargain with Estevao.

I think he needs some games and time to settle into the setup. I think it was his first game as a professional in English football, certainly the EPL.

Wasnt great yesterday, but then he was up against Munoz who is a very capable and exciting right back in the Premiership.

Another Cobham/City via Reading youth teamer so absolutely going to give him support this season.

My only question over the signing is/was what happens to George who can also fill in and do a job for us. Thought it a strange one... and dare I say it if he isnt sold, might be worth testing you know who out wide left.

If anyone can find anything on how the city youth team performed and where the players played under Maresca, it might help clear up some confusion of what we're seeing with his selections now.

Transfermarkt shows the full squad that Maresca managed in PL2 20/21 with Man City U23s.

Gittens wasn't in it.

You can click on individual players and use the various filters on the Stats All Seasons drop down menu to see where they played.

Palmer played predominantly at RW according to this data.

Far too early to make a fair assessment.

Knee jerk reactions a bit much after a game that nobody really performed to thier full ability.

Exactly this.

He's a 21 year old (and only just) that's never played in the PL before, did not have a pre-season to get accustomed, and will be unfamiliar with the players surrounding him. People need to wind their necks in.

Exactly. I mean in some of the pre-season games there was something about his willingness to take players on and his overall pace that was decent. He just needed some shooting boots. A few more games and we will have a better idea. Half a season. Way to early to pass judgement.

Question: Why are some folks so eager for him to be seen as a failure?

We played a Palace side that had 2/3 players on our wingers at all times given the way Maresca had us set up.

Not the right time to be overly critical on Gittens when Palace had one game plan and that was to set up shop for a draw.

Really? They seemed more than happy to attack other than the final 10-15 minutes.

BENCH PLAYER at Borussia Dortmund and hes thrown straight in the deep end

Bar the individual errors that led to it, I don't recall them ever threatening our goal or having a lot of numbers up front. They seemed more interested in settling back in their shell and try to nick us off the break, which is fine considering the won the FA Cup that way.

I think he is ready for the "deep end".

Well, he played 76 games for Dortmund. Widely considered a great talent. Homegrown English lad from Reading. He actually played for Chelsea briefly when he was 7. Sure we over paid. But it is not like when we over paid 75 million quid for a Ukrainian junkie who'd only played 29 games total ever in the Ukrainian league. I think Gittens has more of an upside.

Gittens is quick and he likes to attack. I want to see a lot more of him play before I write him off.

Estevao looks great - but i think there is room for both lads doing well and being successful for us - as well Pedro Neto and maybe Simons.

I just think it is a bit much to write a player off after 1 game.

TBF I don't think anybody is writing him off Celery.

Certainly his immediate objective is to adapt to the speed and physicality of the EPL. Then his next objective is delivering more consistency than Madueke, which a great many people on here, will tell you should be relatively straightforward to do.

Nah I’ve already written him off.

Estevao looks 10x the player, cost half the price and apparently came from a ‘weaker’ league

Someone give Arsenal a call to bail us out again please.

No, somebody WAS writing him off.

You don’t spend 60M on someone to loan them.

Didn’t some fans want Estevao loaned out to Strasbourg when we signed him, to help him get used to European football.
