Am I the only one who cynically thinks this is the board making it look like they're backing Alonso by putting in a nonsensical bid knowing it will be rejected so they can say 'see we tried. Now how about this 17 year old....'

Not really, 8m is very reasonable for 34 years old. But when the other party is not willing to sell, you usually have to offer more.

They only paid about £11m for him didnt they, so its not exactly taking the piss to offer a bit less than that for a player his age with one year off his contract with them.

It seems were the only club that is expected to offer the exact right amount for a player or be ridiculed, were the goldilocks of football, offer too much were morons for over paying, offer too little were being horrible to the other club....

£13m plus add ons, probably £15m considering some of those must have been activated. (On a 3 year contract)

Which means on book value alone he's at least 10.

I mean of the board went all in on their asking price some of you cynics will complain about the money being sent on a 34 year old so there will always be an angle no matter what

BlueCo never wanted him to begin with, they just wanted to look like they were backing Alonso. I didn't think the original offer was an insult like others are saying, but I knew Sunderland wouldn't accept it because they don't want to sell, and BlueCo would have known that. The only thing they can do is buy young players for high transfer fees. Nothing has changed, and with only a few weeks until pre-season starts, it's only a matter of time now before those that were saying "be patient" will once again realise they've been played by BlueCo.

Who the fck views him as one of the most technically promising young players. They went through three managers and he couldn't get a game in a side that almost got relegated. De Zerbi showed him the door from the moment he arrived and he has done fck all whenever he has been on the pitch.

What it should have said is that he is viewed as a very promising prospect for a mediocre mid table club, in a small stadium and a hierarchy that has no ambition and is broke.
