Am I the only one who cynically thinks this is the board making it look like they're backing Alonso by putting in a nonsensical bid knowing it will be rejected so they can say 'see we tried. Now how about this 17 year old....'

Not really, 8m is very reasonable for 34 years old. But when the other party is not willing to sell, you usually have to offer more.

It seems were the only club that is expected to offer the exact right amount for a player or be ridiculed, were the goldilocks of football, offer too much were morons for over paying, offer too little were being horrible to the other club....
