Granit Xhaka

have to say, of all the signings we could make, this is one of the least interesting, more mind boggling - both at the same time.

I used to rip the piss out of Arsenal fans for playing this loser...and now, we are linked with a big money move for someone about to retire. It is mad.

Xhaka is a really underrated player. He has been consistent for several seasons and literally dominates the midfield. Has a good passing range and most importantly is a leader. Him and Caicedo would act as great protection for our defence. Xhaka, I have been a fan of for a long time. Yes, he is turning 34 but his fitness record is immaculate. He rarely is injured and plays 90 mins almost every game. In a season where we don't have Europe, this would be a stellar signing. Sunderland are not getting anywhere near Europe had he not signed. He had that much of an impact on the team. I would actually say he was the signing of the season.

One game a week and knowing he knows the PL well and is a leader who rarely is injured, then I think this is a signing where people at the end of the season will appreciate how smart of a move it was.

The only issue I have is the fee but otherwise fully agreed.

Well we have been crying out for experience but that doesn’t always have to mean old.

Camavinga or Tchouameni have loads of experience but are still in their early 20’s.

We wanted Alonso to have a say, EM claims he didn’t have any say but I’m sure the club weren’t interested in KDH before EM spoke to them. If this is Alonso’s guy then shouldn’t we go for it?

Sometimes it’s about changing the culture of the club, we were outrun by everyone last year, a few older pros who won’t allow team mates to train half hearted or not put a shift in on a Saturday. An ear in the dressing room, a voice on the pitch for the manager.

I can’t sit here and tell the SD’s to let Alonso get on with it then moan when he does so if this does happen only time will tell if it was worth it and it might not even be about his contribution on the pitch.

Can’t say he was anywhere near my list of potential targets though.

Why would they listen to him though? Not to sound deliberately disrespectful, but it's Granit Xhaka we are talking about here, not Thiago Silva. It's hardly like Xhaka has been this outstanding successful top player for a decade. He had one good year in Germany and was a bit of joke at Arsenal.

bo**ocks. Instrumental in their FA Cup win over us amongst many other things. It ended in tears when he fell out with Emery and the fans.

It would be a classic Blueco move to be linked with Camavinga, Wharton etc and wind up with Xhaka while feeling happy this is what the manager wanted.

If so far it’s Cuca for Palestra, Chalobah for Lecroix and Enzo for Xahka it’s another transfer window of going backwards.

There has to be much more than that.

Going backwards ? I'd say you're severely over-rating Cucu and Enzo, and severely under-rating Lacroix !

Maybe, i was actually happy for Cuca and Enzo to go for the right money but if you told me their replacements were a 21yd defender after 1 good season in a poor seria a and 34yd Xahka I might have said keep what you have.

I’m being harsh on Lacroix. Like I said if this is the beginning and the Enzo money gets spent wisely fine but if this is it for me the needle has moved backwards.

Xhaka as player coach - assistant manager. The dressing room needs to be more professional and this is what Alonso feels the answer is. So i am happy to go along with it. 34? Could be too old - could be fine - look at Modric. Xhaka is organised and Swiss. He is a grown up with experience.

The BIG question is: Do we sign another midfield player? Or rely upon Santos/Lavia. Lavia - the most technically gifted player who is literally incapable of playing 90 mins. Imagine if he could play an entire game?

We don't know what to expect at his age. Could be very useful in a one game a week season, or his body catches up with him and we see a decline.

Surely if we sell Enzo we bring in another CM.

Think that’s the midfield done. They probably don’t want to pay the market fees for a top CM, and the associated wages. £120m Anderson is getting paid £300k/w

Spot on. I get it's a sign of change by signing experience and backing the manager but really? I've even seen comparisons to Thiago Silva...but the key difference is he had been a world class defender and was still a top, top player, who improved the starting XI. Xhaka is none of those things.

If he was a key figure of the so called 'banter era' at Arsenal, then what does this say about us?

It's a sign of the decline of the club. I always said to my Arsenal mate that Xhaka at best would have lasted 2 seasons in the Roman era before getting binned off.

He's slow, one footed, not great when pressed and about to turn 34. Then add the pointless bookings he has picked up over the years, it's not like he is going to improve the discipline either. Sure, he's done well helping Sunderland to Europa League but we should be aiming for the very top and he just isn't it.

A bit depressing that on the entire planet there isnt another player capable of doing what Xhaka does. I get the need for a midfielder, I can see merit in a season of him being with us, but it just smacks of desperation.

If he comes, and its Alonso approved, cool, interesting experiment.

So not £40m then, hopefully one day people learn these Twitter bellends talk absolut sh*te...

This looks like a Xabi signing and a lot of these same people complaining about it wanted him to have a say. You can’t win with some fans.

If we go out and sign another 18 year old they start complaining again that they aren’t listening to the manager.

We paid £17.2m for this kid who has done fck all both at home, twice, and with us.

I agree that the messages of 30m were ridiculous but 8m is a pisstake even for a 33 year old two time FA Cup winner and Bundesliga winner.

There are excellent players in every league. The important bit is to only take the very top players. Palestra was the top defender in the league.

He will take time to adapt but he has everything a wing back in the PL needs. He’s very quick, can run all game and can play on either side.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do. I think he’ll be really good fit at Chelsea.
