February 24, 201412 yr Back on topic, I saw The Lego Movie yesterday. First 2 thirds are great, really funny and creative. The final third isn't so great, the jokes dry up and it becomes far too sentimental for its own good. The film just loses momentum as it goes on, probably could've done with trimming it down a bit. It's a kids' film, isn't it?
February 24, 201412 yr It's a kids' film, isn't it? Has lots of jokes that adults should find family and pokes a lot of fun at general Lego nostalgia. A good film can be enjoyable for everyone. Star Wars for example is a kids series. I've long stopped worrying about if things are kids films or not, you miss out on too much good stuff. Frozen has been one of the films I've enjoyed most for a long time To quote C.S. Lewis: "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." . Edited February 24, 201412 yr by abigsmurf
February 24, 201412 yr Kick Ass 2 Most of the charm and wit of the first is completely lost and the tone doesn't feel right, still has its moments but more misses than hits. 6/10
February 26, 201412 yr It was my son's birthday yesterday so I took him to see the Lego Movie. I loved it, he loved it, the wife loved it. It's very charming, witty and funny, only criticism is that it's about 10/15 minutes too long. 9/10.
February 27, 201412 yr The Counselor Very good and different from what you would expect. Reminds me of Shakespeare. 9/10
February 27, 201412 yr Going through a lot of the 'On Demand' movies at the moment. Found some right gems recently. Wrong Turn 4: Your typical 'attractive teens on spring break' gore film. 7/10 Dark Skies: Alien / Paranormal film. Good twists and engaging throughout 8/10 Thor 2: An average superhero film. Has it's moments. 6/10
February 28, 201412 yr Watched Lost In Translation again last night. While it isnt my sort of movie at all I cant help but find it so relaxing and even quite hypnotic. One of very few films that I could watch repeatedly Edited February 28, 201412 yr by BlueDay
February 28, 201412 yr The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, surprisingly enough for the first time. Loved it myself, definitely the best Western I've seen in a while, touches on a delicate but very fascinating part of history. Great performances from Pitt and Affleck in particular. A neglected masterpiece, definitely one of the best westerns ever made & probably the greatest tribute film made to date to Terrence Malick. An extremely atypical example of Hollywood film-making that shows that Hollywood can, despite itself, sometimes get film-making extremely right - helped in no small part by having an extremely talented australian director ;-). Unfortunately it never received the kudos it quite fully deserved at the time due to studio flim-flammery & faffing about - not released until September 2007 (being 2 years after it was made) & so for the awards season (being the extremely strong 2008) was up against the likes of the superb No Country for Old Men (that probably rightfully won), equally superb Michael Clayton & equally superb There will be Blood for best picture &, in fact, was shamefully not even nominated by the Academy for best film. The Academy did, however, rightfully nominate Casey Affleck for best supporting actor & Deakins for the astonishing cinematography (who was also nominated for his superb camera work on No Country for Old Men). Affleck's performance in support (as well as Sam Rockwell & the entire cast) is astonishingly good but, of course, he was up against Javier Bardem (who deservedly won for No Country) & Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton): acting of the highest quality. No doubt the producers have in retrospect & ever since kicked themselves for not releasing it a year earlier in 2006 (so as to qualify for the 2007 awards season which was far less strong). It would have been up against the terribly over-rated & hackneyed The Departed (which of course won) & very good Babel (which should have won best picture). Anyway, as good a film as say Bonnie & Clyde.
March 3, 201412 yr Kick Ass 2 Most of the charm and wit of the first is completely lost and the tone doesn't feel right, still has its moments but more misses than hits. 6/10 I disliked the first Kick Ass film. I think a lot of people liked it because there was a little girl using swear words. The film its self was actually pretty poor. Wouldnt even waste my time watching the second one.
March 3, 201412 yr I disliked the first Kick Ass film. I think a lot of people liked it because there was a little girl using swear words. The film its self was actually pretty poor. Wouldnt even waste my time watching the second one. Got to disagree with you on that one, the first was excellent. It was a very tongue in cheek, sideways look at the superhero genre. The humour was spot on with with Nicolas Cage impersonating Adam West whilst Big Daddy was genius. Mark Strong was great bad guy, the action sequences were great like Big Daddy taking out the whole of the timber warehouse single handed or Hit Girl rescuing her Dad and Kick Ass when they were being tortured. There was a lot of quotable lines from the film and a lot of great scenes and dialogue, it's one of the rare examples of the film being better than the book and so I was quite looking forward to the sequel which is why it was disappointing that it didn't even come close to the quality of the first.
March 3, 201412 yr Only God Forgives Definitely not a sequel to Drive (loved that film) but very much the spiritual successor made by the same director with Ryan Gosling in the lead. Set in Bangkok, it's the story of a man who (reluctantly) seeks revenge for his brother's murder. Like Drive it's an exercise of style over substance but even more so. The plot is very simple but that's not really the point of this movie, it does what it sets out to do very well. I quite enjoyed it although it's not something I'd watch more than once.
March 5, 201412 yr I watched Prisoners Sunday night.. was a cracking film if you like thrillers.. a bit like Seven... good twist, great plot, fantastic acting etc.. would highly recommend it. Edited March 5, 201412 yr by January Blues

Good post. In the first Kick Ass everything klicked - the casting was spot on, the story well-paced, the soundtrack matched the scenes and those two scenes (lumber warehouse and the rescue) genuinely amazing. I remember someone saying that the lumber warehouse scene raised the question of why Batman didn't use a gun :-) It's gutting when a brilliant film is followed by a less good sequal.
March 6, 201412 yr About to see the sequel to 300 tonight, quite excited. Is Gerard Butler in it???? I'd be excited if so... But he died. Maybe they'll resurrect him... Edited March 6, 201412 yr by moi

March 6, 201412 yr Went to see the Book Thief on Tuesday. Wasn't sure whether I'd enjoy it as I'd loved the book so much and was worried the film wouldn't do it justice but I thought it was a creditable adaptation. I don't think it's had much publicity but I thought all the performances were good and the story very moving. The book was still better though (as it is in 99% of cases I find!)
March 7, 201412 yr There were brief scenes involving Gerard Butler in flashbacks, but no this movie is about the Athenians not the Spartans. Was a great watch, I chose to see it in 2D as I find 3D annoying, overall I don't think it was as good as the original but it comes very close (far closer than most sequels).
March 7, 201412 yr La migliore offerta http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1924396/?ref_=nv_sr_2 Mind blowing 9.5/10
