If Torres plays as he did in the first half of the Hull game for the rest of the season, we're not going to struggle for goals. Whether directly from him or as a result of his movement. Great linkup play too.

And having an entirely different animal in Lukaku offers us the direct option, he's quicker, allows us to play the long ball. And he looks to be going from strength to strength, very impressive pre-season.

Yep, I'd take another striker too, always happy to see improvements made, but I'm not too worried if we don't get one, Ba's a capable third option. Bit of positivity guys, our attack looks superb!

He was the same old Torres. Some nice touches here and there, but ultimately, the least likely player to score

We havent particularly struggled for goals last season either, but if youre looking for Torres to make something out of nothing and win us the match, its not gonna happen

Anyone would think we lost 2-0 and Torres scored both as own goals!

I believe the youngsters say "Jokes"

I agree. JM is back, CFC had an outstanding first half, Lamps scored from a sublime free kick. All seems well in the world...

Oh my. Please not the service issue. Please....

So what you are saying is that it's fine to have a centre forward who doesn't score? If so we should've signed Heskey. He'd have been a whole cheaper after all. It's probably a new low in this pathetic saga when people are saying that actually, we shouldn't be expecting Torres to score after all....

Even with the creativity behind him you should still occasionally expect your striker to create something or... actually forget it, just can't do this again

Quote me where I said that, oh what's that? You can't? Oh dear.

Torres doesn't score enough goals, no-one can dispute that, my comments were aimed at users who were still slating Torres for no real reason other than the fact they don't like him.

My comments were also match specific, I'm fully aware of his performances last season where a dead donkey would have been more use.

The huge bulk of our possession came from the midfield 5 on Sunday, how is Nando meant to 'create something' when they choose not to pass to him?

I'm not gonna have a pop at individuals, but i stated in match thread i think, about Torres' only clearcut chance wasif Oscar had of squared the ball.

Now if you watch that clip, Torres shadows oscar in on his right, if he squares it he runs onto it and hopefuly taps into an empty net, if he was level with him, if Oscar squares the ball it would go behind him because of Torres' momentum, but hey every little error lets batter Torres, in the words from the bible, "go forth and multiply. ;-)

Not saying Torres would do well at Citeh, but they play a more open attacking game, where as we play a pressing midfield orientated style of play, our style would suit 5 mids that interchange, can see torres being played like that, and he will score more Goals, Fact......

gotta say watching City tonight it occurred to me that their midfield were superb (albeit Aguero was playing in there) but i thought Dzeko was absolutely useless.....

got man on the match award, and IMO, did great

Thought dzeko was superb apart from the finishing

Exactly! The ones who say different are the same ones who gave Torres a 4 or a 5 for his performance in the Hull match. Sure a striker's main job is to finish, but when you have a great midfield sometimes the midfield beats you to it. Someone pointed out that Drogba had 10 goals in the best season in our history, and I remember a majority of supporters then wanting him to go. Boy, did he show them. Dzeko's performance tonight was great, did everything right, but did not finish so he was useless like poor old Torres...

Hit the nail on the head. Its hilarious to watch some people contradict themselves so much on here.

Well of course it's great if a striker works hard and puts in 100%. He isn't going to score EVERY game, but it helps if he scores SOME games.

Torres, give him his due, works his a**e off for the team. You have to give him that. He gets himself into good positions and he helps a great deal but he just can't seem to morph into the lethal finisher he used to be. Sure, he scores, but can we honestly say we all feel confident if it's him leading the line for us this season?

I was more than a little surprised Jose gave him the nod to start over Lukaku.

after Rooney's cameo on saturday i really want him to join us. ill always support torres, or any other player in our shirt, but you cannot compare the impact the two players have on a match. Rooney would fit in perfectly with our trio of playmakers as well

I think joses' conundrum is which MFs to pick, don't envy that choice, what i can see is

KDB.....Mata.......Oscar

.......Hazard

eventually..

If only that could actually work, we've only tried it once and it failed miserably, although to be fair we were playing against one of the best defences in the world (Juventus).

Anyone remember the scene in Forest Gump when he is playing american football and all the croud hold up signs to tell him what to do. The Shed and the Matthew Harding stand should hold up signs reminding Torres to shoot when he has the ball near the goal.

Not a fact I'm afraid because Torres is finshed as a truly top class striker and wouldn't get a look-in at a team like City.

I trust you have seen Aguero's goal from last night? It wasn't exactly a simple tap in from a clear cut chance created by excellent service was it. But then truly world class forwards like RVP and Aguero have the ability to do that sort of thing quite regularly. Score a goal out of literally nothing.

I've never seen Torres do anything close to that for us.  The tenacity to do something with the pass he got was what most impressed me.  He was determined to turn his man and get a shot away, everything else was up to fate.  That could easily have gone wide or right into the keepers hands.  But maximise your chances as much (and as effective) as Aguero does and you'll score regularly.

I think Torres would get a pass from most of us if he were working as hard as he apparently is in the right areas.  Snapping those shots at goal and fighting to get on the end of everything we get into the box, even if he was the unluckiest striker to ever play the game and missed every one.  If he were posing a threat consistently rather than filling in as a surplus midfielder his scoring wouldn't be as big of an issue (it wouldn't even be an issue as Sydney pointed out if you average a lot of shots, you average a lot of goals).

There was a point against Hull where Cole was put through on goal beating the last man.  Nothing became of it, but why was Cole where Torres was meant to be?  I see this a lot.  Why are our defenders more frequently sighted in striker positions than our striker?  I don't understand why he never seems to be on the end of the many great chances we create.  If only we could have seen a young Drogba in this team.

A young Anelka or a young Crespo, anyone but the Torres we have today lol.

My opinion of the Hull game was he worked hard which was nice to see but it was the same old story of not being in the right places to get a goal.

If he wants to be anywhere else on the pitch then Jose should do with he did with Gudjohnson and drop him deeper and play Lukaku ahead of him. The problem with that is we have better players already playing behind the striker.

Its like he has forgotten how to be a striker.

Don't we always think that about pretty much every star player joining us? Weren't we excited about Sheva joining? Half the people here calling for Torres' head were sure he would "fit in perfectly with our trio of playmakers" and were the reason the thread had a thousand pages because of their excitment. Okay, Sheva never did it in the Premier League, we were tricked into believing! But what about Torres? Some people just love to set themselves up for disappointment, and are then the first ones here to bury the player so they can forget they were ever excited. Just saying.

Thing is, Rooney as recently as Saturday has shown just how good his link up play is managing 2 assists in a 30 minute cameo despite playing next to no football during the pre-season.

Make no mistake, he would really improve our team.

Thats not true because we didnt play with a trio of playmakers when we bought Torres.
