I seem to remember a certain few people saying he would be first out the if mourinho came in though....

I certainly believed Torres was out if Jose came.

Whether we can actually sell Torres is another thing but my guess is that, in Jose's ideal world, he gets a striker on his wish list and Torres goes.

Ba wouldn't have gotten to where he is today if he couldn't cope with fasting whilst playing... ever considered that?

I am sure he is taking in plenty of water and / or glucose based drinks which will keep his energy levels going... its not like he is fasting at the peak moment of our season also, so why the big fuss...

I watched a programme on BBC on Saturday morning about Muslims in the premier league and Ba openly said if his performances drop the manager should rightly bench him. You can't punish someone for having a religion... even if we think its all a bit silly.

Also correct me if im wrong but they can eat after a certain time of day cant they. So he can get all the food he needs each day.

I think basically they can eat between sunset and dawn, and also take some kind of supplement tablet too. Google also says the insane are exempt from fasting, so maybe he could just turn up with a pencil up his nose saying "wibble" a lot.

There are certain nutritionists who believe that fasting while accompanied by the right nutrients is very, very good for you. Our bodies were designed to store and then burn food back in our days as hunter gatherers and much like hibernating animals do. Its making hay while the sun shines if you like, eat loads while foods a plenty and it will stand you in good stead during the more barren winter months.

I dont know weather Ramadam permits smoothies or other nutritional drinks as they are allowed water and i doubt smoothies were thought of when they were making up this religion. And i doubt it would be advised to starve while competing as a highly paid professional athlete were a much more balanced diet including carbs and protein for the extra energy bursts they provide would be required.

But during preseason training it is probably a very good way to get yourself in tip top shape and get rid of any pounds put on while on holiday.

Anyway, looks like were stuck with Torres......lets hope JM can get a bit more out of him. Maybe he should fast

Interesting, any studies or good links I can read?

One thing is for sure - cardio in a fasted state oxidises fat breakdown quicker than any other way, so if you have put on a few pounds of fat they will fly off.

The flip side of this however is that it will also burn away muscle, as the body searches for the easiest source of fuel, which is proteins stored in the muscle.

The Independent was reporting that if we get Rooney then either Ba or Torres will be sold. But it looks like Rooney, bizarrely, is going to stay at United and it would likely be Ba that goes. Even if Ba had scored 40 goals last season it would probably still be him going.

i'm okay with Torres staying. I just think that this summer was the ideal time to sell because if he has a s**t season this time around we will never get rid. Whereas he just had a 20+ goal season with us and won the CC Golden Boot.

I'm useless at links and all that, but try watching Fat,sick and Nearly Dead. Its a documentary about an  Aussie business man called Joe Cross.Probably all over the Net as well. All medical expert advice as well not just crash dieting, very interesting.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/shortcuts/2013/jul/10/ramadan-10-things-to-know

It's the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and Muslims have been fasting throughout it for more than 14 centuries. And yet non-Muslims are always full of questions. Here are the answers to some of the most common:

So you don't eat at all?

No, we only fast during daylight hours – from dawn until sundown. This year in the UK, that means over 18 hours of nil by mouth – we can't eat, drink, smoke, or have sex during those hours. Easy, tiger.

Don't you get hungry?

Is the Pope a Catholic? Yes, we get hungry and thirsty, but that's the point. We eat Sehri, a pre-dawn meal, and at sunset we break the fast (called Iftar), usually with a date and a glass of water.

A date with whom?

A date with introspection. Ramadan is an opportunity to focus on the soul rather than the body, so we get through the day trying to be more spiritual, as well as seeking to improve our behaviour. We empathise with those in need and give thanks for having food at the end of the day, when millions of people don't have that luxury.

Surely kids don't have that kind of self-control?

Children don't have to fast, but they can if they really want to. Although once puberty hits, there is no escape. Also exempt are the elderly, the sick, and anyone who has a medical condition.

Isn't it a bit hot to fast in July?

Muslims follow the lunar calendar, so every year it moves back 11 days. The last time Ramadan was in July was 1980. Go figure.

So it all started on Wednesday?

Well, not quite. Every year there is a bit of chaos, because of the different ways of measuring. Generally speaking, Muslims follow the traditional method of sighting the new moon with the naked eye and we look to Saudi Arabia to declare it. Then there is the local sighting issue – do we follow the moon being sighted in the UK or do we follow the opinion that the first Muslim to see the new moon, no matter where, means the rest of the world can start Ramadan? Or there is the argument for astronomical calculations rather than naked-eye sightings.

I'm confused. Do you celebrate it every time you see the moon?

No, that would be ridiculous. But it is confusing. Especially when it comes to Eid.

And who is this Eid?

Eid is basically a rave-up at the end of Ramadan, when families and friends get together to feast after fasting. It starts with a prayer at the mosque and then we eat as if we haven't eaten in a month.

Can I say Ramadamadingdong?

Sure, we love a sense of humour, though "Ramadan Mubarak" might be more appropriate.

As in former Egyptian president, Hosni …?

As in the Arabic for "blessed". It's a traditional greeting.

We cant sell Ba until January Transfer Window

good for ba. once he becomes a morbidly obese trucker he will have something to fall back on

If you subscribe or have access to the Journal of Sport Science, this review article is worth a read. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22738880

The key points are that there is little evidence to show that Ramadan fasting is detrimental to performance, let alone when factors such as total energy and macronutrient intakes are adjusted to fit the new meal parameters.

Like i said in my original post i wouldn't recommend fasting during the season because of the energy boosts provided by carbs and protien but it actually could be quite a beneficial aid to the rigors of pre-season training.

Detox, fasting, even colonic irrigation are ways of cleansing the body of impurities(unwanted $hit). I doubt professional athletes can let themselves go to much in the month or so they get off but who knows it might become a staple part of future pre-season regimes.

When you think of all the advances these days in sports science and the new fad things people try to improve performance.....it was only 20yrs ago players could have a pint and a fry-up before a game.

And if you'd have told me a couple of years ago a players was fasting i'd have said 'do what dock his pay' he's unfit to do his job but having looked into things like the benefits of diet and nutrition trust me it aint THAT big a deal.

That is like hoping against hope. Enough seen, enough said. The Torres decline is irreversible.

  • 2 weeks later...

Was in the Daily Fail today that Torres realises he'll be the fall guy if we get Rooney but will resist any attempts by us to force him out. He and his family are settled in London now and enjoying it and although he pined to return to Liverpool many times in his first year at Chelsea, he's now determined to see out his contract.

Hmmm. Suppose if he doesn't want to go, no one can force him, but it depends on his World Cup ambitions. If we sign Rooney then it's likely Torres will be second or even third choice striker, which isn't going to do well for his WC 2014 hopes of being selected. So it's all a question of just HOW desperate Torres is to stay here.

Also, I'm a little alarmed at Jose saying it's Rooney or bust. Should we fail to sign Rooney, and United are certainly being extremely difficult, we can't honestly go into this new season with that forward line. I wouldn't be confident at all.
