Willian

If both parties can agree further than the 2 years on offer on the table (yes Luiz was offered 2 years same age as Willy before he joined Arse) maybe the 3rd year optional based on performance targets ?

I know Willy is 31 but wouldn’t like to see him playing against us next season as he will do if he walks for free next month.

His free kick return is pretty good and apparently he’s the 1st prem player ever to score in every calendar month (only cus Covid😉)!

Fair point on the two years yet with the new players coming in I would prefer Willian to move on.

Hopefully Ziyech will provide better crosses and arguably James does already though we certainly need another penalty taker!

I don't know know why we couldn't just give him the 3 years. 2 years would probably be perfect. He really is performing.

Why would we give a player who will be 32 in august 3 years? That would mean he'll be near 35 by the time his contract ends, that would be a silly decision. Willian has a year left in him at most at top level.

I really can't see the point of giving Willian an extension of any sort if we are going to place confidence in Odoi. We will have Pulisic and Ziyech next season as first choice, Odoi as the third option and, as a 4th choice emergency option, Werner can play out wide. There just won't be enough game time for Willian and, even as a regular first team player, he has been hit and miss for too many seasons now. I can't see him being a player who will happily sit out 5 or 6 games or be satisfied with league appearances and a few runs off the bench.

Yes it would be a nice luxury or bit of security to have 4 wingers to choose from and it would provide plenty cover but I'm not sure it would make for a happy changing room.

Two options out left, two options out right, with Willian as experience, I definitely wouldn't be against giving Willian another year, but he doesn't want that.

Giving him longer than a year is just a mistake.

Werner will likely take our penalties starting next season, so that is sorted. He’s been good on them at Leipzig.

I don't see how Willian would just lose everything in a year. He is one of our best performers. Have been all season. I think he is the same player after two years.

I agree that he is blocking CHO's path but if he is all that shouldn't he breeze past the old Willian in terms of the starting eleven? Frank is picking players by merit.

Anyway I am on the fence with this but the age isn't the problem for me. I think we avoid 30-40m of transfer fees by just extending his contract.

How many top clubs have wingers in their mid 30's? Zero. Willian will now start to lose his pace, something he relies on, he's still a very fast player but I strongly doubt he'll be as fast in a year or two time.

It does look like we do need 1 more winger to fill the depth in the squad since we won't have 4 pure wingers that would rotate. Pulisic, Ziyech and CHO would all play but if 1 gets injured then we wouldn't have a real winger as a substitution option, so it could be Mount playing on the left hand side as he has done it already a few times and Werner that is naturally most of the time there as well but he would obviously have the striker mentality.

Willian doesn't look happy when he's on the bench so even if he were to accept the 2 year deal I'm not sure how his attitude would affect the team.

He was ok, but missed couple of easy chances. Considering who's coming and possibly another attacker to come, wouldn't lose any sleep if he turns down the 2 years deal ( pretty generous by Chelsea standard)

My opinion on the matter is that the club should offer him a 3 year contract and if after a year he is sulking or his performances have dipped we have the option to sell him, I think he is the sort of player who will always generate interest due to his experience and work rate. I think he will be an upgrade on the wings for majority of the clubs in the league especially mid table clubs such as Tottenham & Arsenal.

Who's paying a transfer fee for a 33 year old Willian with 2 years left on his contract? Even moreso, why would he leave when the other club is likely to not pay him as much.

Too much risk for a player that has been so up and down for 7 years.

Are you going to pay it?     ££££

hmm last i checked neither will you.. if he takes us into the UCL with his performances.. he is doing that himself. i dont know how well Ziyech adapts and it take willian over CHO every day of the week for now..

So he can go back to his usual performances? No thank you, i'll take what i've seen the last 7 years, not the last 3 weeks.

while i was reacting to last night's win.. but practically if you look at it... even with the signing of Ziyech we will be weak in attack.. CHO clearly prefers playing on the left and as an understudy to willian hasnt impressed much this season albeit due to injury... so if we let both pedro and willian go.. we will have 3 wide players + 1(Werner - if played there).. which for an EPL season is 1 less than what it should be.

With do much change coming, i think having willian in the squad would give us a nice experienced head in the dressing room, i didnt think of him as much of a mentor or leader, but i get the impression he has stepped into the role a bit this season.

Ive read that if willian goes, we will sign another out and out winger, possibly benrahma, but i think keeping willian, would depend on whether he would be happy to play a reduced role for a season or 2.

I would probably offer him a 2 year deal, but look to move him on next summer and get some money for him, obviously it wont be big money but still around £10-15m i think.

He has had a great season, his numbers have been critised over his chelsea career, but with 9 goals, and 7 assists, i think he is a contender for player of the year, credit where credit is due.
