Smartest thing would be to sign Butland now, let him start as No 1 with Courtois on the bench. If he does reasonably well he keeps it till the end of the season, a few clangers and Courtois is back in goal. End of the season, either get in a No 1 with Butland as 2 or let him retain the jersey.

This absolutely wouldn't be a smart thing to do.

That might work out well for Chelsea as the agent will put pressure on Courtois to sign a new deal, and we can sell him next summer for a price to Real Madrid.

Suddenly it’s all about the kids again and the agent trying a bit of emotional blackmail to paint us as the baddies for not selling him.

If we can’t find a suitable replacement at a decent price Courtois should stay and see out the final year of his contract. It’s not worth downgrading massively for the sake of the £31m Madrid have apparently offered.

Trying to paint us in a bad light now at the end of his contract is just a smokescreen, his kids weren't an issue when he was lifting the premier league trophy's.

He has clearly lead us on. March 2017 he wasn't saying anything about moving to madrid to be closer to his children. In fact he said he wanted a new contract.

A year later march 2018, Courtois says he will definately be here for the upcoming season, and he is expecting to sign a new contract. 

If he had said 18 months ago, he wasn't going to sign, then we could've gotten a decent fee and a replacement in. 

The club have offered to make him one of best paid goalkeepers in the world, but he has still turned it down.

Just be honest Courtois and say you want to play for madrid because they are the biggest club in the world. Don't use your kids as leverage, and get your agent to try emotionally blackmail the club in the media. 

I'd make him see out his final year, but I would be starting Bulka in cup games, and possibly some home league games, to see if he can make the step up. 

With what is available in the market i think we should be gambling on Bulka. No world class keepers available unless we spend big on Oblak.

Fully agree with you...think Bulka is a cracking young goalkeeper...I'd sell Courtois if RM bullied up £50m...if not then I'd keep him but let Bulka play in the cup games and Europa league...

Losing him this late in the window with no top class replacement available would be a disaster.

I think we have no other chance than stick with him for the remaining year. 

Unless we have someone lined up just as well keep him for this season....on the downside he hasn't had a minute of training with the new system so it will take him a couple of weeks or so to get back to fitness etc stick Bulka in net in the meantime.  I fully understand the kids situation (if it really is a genuine plea) and I suspect that many of us on this forum have been there personally, but unlike us working class stiffs he can just jump on a private jet any time he wants and head to sunny Spain.

The problem with Courtois is he's been misleading the clubs for years now, yes he said he wanted to be close to his family, but he also said he's happy to stay in London, he's even willing to consider a new contract but was always too busy. I mean, he's focused on football during the season, focused on WC after the season, then he's on holiday and couldn't be reached. Had he been upfront and made up his mind earlier, we wouldn't be in this scenario right now. He's keeping all the options to himself, now looks like the club isn't willing to play along anymore. Unless Madrid chip in another 10-15M, the club has every right to turn down the offer. If he's going to play a good season, let him walk out free, I'm sure the club will pay for his Uber fare. Of course, if he's going to act like a real a*hole and not give 100%, we are going to suffer on the field, but that's not a good sign for his next employer either. I think Sarri told him to give a good 12 months, and let him decided his own future . If Courtois is willing, I reckon write off 30M transfer fee is worth it.

I reckon the club will borrow that fax machine from United, it will come handy at the deadline date.

Don Balon reports that Courtois's agent Henrotay has asked the notorious Mino Raiola to get his client, AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma a switch to Stamford Bridge in the next couple of days...figure quoted for Donnarumma is £53m...

This is what i don't get, how can you be too busy? I imagine the agent does all the negotiating and Tbo just has to sign on the dotted line at the end or simply say 'No thanks, i want more than the measly £13,000,000 a year that you've offered'. Not like he has to sit there for months and negotiate himself.

Given their relegation picking up butland for stoke ONLY at a reasonable price would be decent too. Not a big competitor for bulka to overcome and has resale value.

An agent pulling the story about being near the kids. Come on. Who's buying that? Anyone else saying it - maybe. I think Courtois is a sh*t but we might still decide to keep him for another year.

Rumour is that Navas is being offered a new contract so maybe his 'dream' move is off anyway...besides who can we get to replace him at his quality in 5 days....rather keep him to help us get us back into CL and lose him at the end of the season...at least we can have a proper look around for his replacement then...
