Patrick Bamford - Back at Chelsea?

Featured Replies

Crystal Palace seem to have tied up a deal to bring Conor Wickham for 9m. They're already quite stacked in that position with Murray, Gayle, Chamakh, Bamford and now Wickham. Most likely someone will be shifted on, but Bamford hasn't done himself any harm with that hat-trick, hope he gets plenty of minutes.

Cheeky fantasy premier league place maybe..

You are correct sir but I'm just trying to be realistic here. Let's not get carried away just yet.

Yep, needs a good season at Palace to prove himself.

Really excited about this kid. Probably the first player since Terry that I think can genuinely break into the team and stay there. He's clearly prolific and with Alan pardew who plays attacking football he's got a great opportunity to really shine.

Palace fan in peace and all that jazz...

First off thanks for the general praise of Palace.  Allow me to repay you by way of confirm a few thinsg for you regarding Bamford's loan with us.

The palace fans seem 50-50 on this. Some are pleased to have got a good prospect, and typically some hate everything about us and don't want him.

I would say that the main issues for those against Bamford's loan is some will be a bit disappointed as they were hoping for Remy and that some see it as developing another teams player whilst stunting the growth of our own.  There may be a little bit of hate because it's Chelsea, but it would be the same if we had a loan from either of the Manchester teams.  In fact a Chelsea youth would be better received than a Manchester youth as at least you're not as northern.

Me, I never expected us to get Remy and I see the massive benefits a successful loan period of Bamford would be for Palace.  In the short term, he could help us survive another season, more long term would be giving us a good reputation for blooding youngsters in the PL means better loan deals of Top 4 hot prospects and better youth purchases when competing for signitures against the likes of Wet Spam and Spurs.

Agree that this is a great move for Chelsea and Bamford. Let's hope that he'll get some minutes.

I think if we gave Sonogo 407 mins over half a season in all competitions (which included 3 starts) whilst fighting a relegation battle for him to score 1 goal (which had it not taken a deflection would have gone wide anyway), then we can give Bamford at least double that.

One of my mates is a Palace fan. He's happy they've signed Bamford but he still wants them to bring in a top level striker.

Right now they have Campbell, Gayle, Murray and Chamakh.

Considering they've typically played with one up front I would say Bamford has his work cut out getting game time at the moment, I would say he is behind Murray and Gayle right now.

Realistically, for the loan striker role he only really has Murray ahead of him and Murray is 31 and spent most of our fiorst 2 season in the PL recovering from aninjury sustained in the play-off semi final.

Bamford and Campbell (and even Wickham if he comes) will all be on the same level.  I think we will try to sell or loan out Campbell anway.

Chamakh plays behind the lone striker mostly and is more of an AMC.  I love him, possibly one of the most technical players we have had in a long time, but he spends at least 4 months of ever season injured.

Gayle can't do Lone striker and only plays on the wing as a sort of false winger or as partner.  We could only play with two upfront against the weaker teams, in which case I reckon Gayle and Bamford would make a pretty decent partnership.  Hopefully we draw a League 1 or 2 side in the league cup and you may see this then.

Isn't it Bolasie on the right wing?

They've got Bolasie, Zaha and Puncheon for the wings so again there's plenty of competition.

Left typically but he and Zaha swap.

Puncheon plays best behind the striker and almost all games under Pardew this is where he plays.  We have have Chung-Yong Lee and possible one of our own youth team, Sullay Kaikai may come through but the former plays more in the middle now and the latter prefers the left.

Regarding Connor Wickham, if we do sign him, he won't automatically come in as our number one striker.  In fact as Bamford has had more of a pre-season with us, he may start the season behind him.

Since Pardew has been at Palace he has shown that he'll play the hardest working players in the most suitable system for the opposition.  Bamford has as much chance as starting a game as anyone else.  I reckon he may even start against Norwich, failing that come on in the second half for Murray.

Finally, below is a video of last nights glorious win over Bromley FC.  Bamfords goals are 2, 3 and 4.  All through the first half of which Bamford played he seem to link up really well with both Kaikai (25, who provide the assist for Bamford's first) and Zaha (11).

Yeah it was against Bromley but no one else, including Gayle, scored a hatrick that night and the way he handle himself looked positive.  We have another game against Fulham tomorrow and another against the Daggers on Monday so I expect him to get some more time before Norwich next week.

Let me welcome you to the Shedend. Always like to hear perspective from opposition fans; especially when they are as in depth and respectful as yours.

Welcome to the forum! Would obviously love to hear your thoughts about Bamford's progress as the season progresses - best of luck this year.

As much as Palace fans generally hate us, I live in Palace territory and have a few mates who are fans - my personal experience with the regard to the back-and-forth between the two teams is that it has been good taste. I do wish Chelsea was as accessible a club to younger fans who just want to go and sing for 90 minutes every week.

I firmly believe if Palace play him in 90% of their games, he will score over 20 goals this season.

The quality of opposing defenders will be higher in the prem, and he will probably see less of the ball, but teams that play Palace will generally play an open game and try to beat them.

He could score more than Costa this season (don't laugh), but playing up front for the biggest clubs is a different baby all together, with 10 defenders to beat most games, could Bamford handle that kind of high quality intense defending ?

Lukaku was a failure off the pitch. I think sulking his way into Jose's office and saying he wanted to start or be sold is what did him in. Bamford seems to realize he has to earn it and doesnt expect to be first choice

Agreed mate. Lukaku doesn't have world class attitude anyway, I think deep down he knows he's a choker. He missed the penalty in the supercup, next day he was on loan. Admittedly I don't know for sure what happened there but if it were me I would want to stay and prove myself worthy. I think deep down he knows Everton and West Brom are his 'level'.

Bamford already dropped behind Wickham in the peckikng order. Doesnt bode well for him

Dont worry, Bamfordinho is biding his time. Guy scored a hat trick last time out, what more can he do

Yeah. Wonder how much he'll play though.

All seems a bit too familiar to me, same thing happened with Josh at Swansea.

Unlike Josh though he has a full season, not 6 months. Still not very hopeful though.

we should have put him out on loan to a (mid table or lower) team that needed a back up striker this season, not a team with about 10 strikers already.

Yeah I cant see him playing much.

With that many strikers available Pardiola doesn't need to develop one of our own who'll be gone after one season anyway. Bamford will probably act as a fill-in.

Who was the last top English striker we had? Was it Kerry?

Chris Sutton. Duh.

Too early to make a judgement on the loan. Remember, Palace don't really have very good or consistent strikers and it's only a matter of time for Bam-bam to get his chance. It's up to him to take it when it comes.
