John Stones

Featured Replies

No 'told you so' from me either.

I just remembered that I had a £10 bet with someone on here earlier in the window that Stones would/wouldn't go for £32m (I think). I can't remember who it was unfortunately cos it was a while ago. I'm not coming to gloat about the bet in any way shape or form. But I think we said that £5 would go to this site, and £5 to charity.

So, if you're out there, mystery person, it would be good if you honoured your commitment (apologies if you already have).

Other than that, no smugness at all from me. I'm glad we kept Stones but I'm not naïve enough to think he'll be with us for a long time, and we have plenty of our own problems to contend with, so there's really nothing to be smug about.

Pleasure conversing with most of you. Good luck for the season (apart from the next game, clearly).

keep him warm for us though, it's only a matter of time  maybe you can take papy or hector off us next summer to sweeten the deal

Decent move for all concerned. Everton get to sell a player who [seemingly] wants to leave without losing too much face, we get the centre back we want for the next decade, Stones gets to join a top club, and Everton also get a hefty fee for him.

(Assuming it's true)

Why would Everton agree to a buyout clause in his contract for the same amount of money they rejected a month ago?

If anything surely his value would further increase because he'd (presumably) be signing a contract extension.

Sounds like bullsh*t to me.

They know he will decrease in value if he doesn't sign a new contract and he want's away.
This way they get to wait a bit longer before having to sort out there defence/ finding a replacement, and they also save a lot of face whilst keeping Stones happy and still get the amount of money they want for him.

They also probably reckon more than one club will be in for him. So the buyout will only be a place to start

Not sure I understand what you mean. If there's a buy out clause then it doesn't matter if more than 1 team want him, there won't be a bidding war, because each team will just match the buy out and stones choose what he wants.

I'm not sure who this is going to benefit, the only way I can see it being plausible, is if stones signs a new deal on better money, but he has a buy out clause that comes into effect in 2017, so everton get another 2 years of service.

If he doesn't sign a new deal I can't see it affecting evertons bargaining position next summer as he would still have 3 years left on his contract.

I'm I the only one that thinks there are plenty of CB's far better than stones for the money...I don't think he is that phenomenal to be honest, he is ball playing, he pulls wide, and he is English, beyond that Zouma is a better talent than he is and younger, we payed 12 million for him, I think we should let Man U over pay for him

Yes thats true. I was thinking his agent would be pushing for more since he get a % of the transfer fee correct?

Kind of agree but we do need more english players in our team especially with Terry coming to an end. And if we re going to have more english players in our team i'd rather they were in defence i don't want english players trying to be creative in the final third.

Joe Cole and lamps did pretty well for us. I actually think there are less promising English defenders than attackers at the moment.

I think the problem is most top young English players are at the big clubs now, how many English players from outside the top 4 plus liverpool would be able to come and challenge for a place in our starting 11 like stones would? Probably just harry kane but he is virtually unobtainable, and he plays in a position we aren't struggling in.

I think sterling even for the £49m would have been a good signing, that could have improved the English contingent, while playing a big part in us trying to win trophies.

There is much else out there that would be worth taking a punt on over the likes of rlc, baker, brown, solanke, aina, and da silva.

He was never worth 40 mill

I've been told that Everton fans on the ''grandoldteam'' forum have some how got this post and calling me a muppet :laugh2:  for thinking that a player that hasn't been proven is not worth 40mill.It's like I said the player is sh*t or something :D

For the one that is copying posts from this forum to the Everton one can kindly f**k off  :JC_doubleup:

Fear not, there was some cross contamination, probably by an aggrieved Shedender who also took a member's (here) username and posted on the Everton forum ,their mods are quick to act it seems.

Thought Stones was superb today. We should've offered crazy money for him. Think we still will. Only it'll be more than 40 million now. Would be the backbone of our defence for 12 years that kid. He can really play.

Showed everything we lacked At the back today...read the game, had pace, composure on the ball, marked his man closely, up for the fight etc...shame we didn't sign him

Certainly is as I suspect we may have missed the boat on this one. If he continues to play anything like today there'll be a couple more clubs interested in him next summer and my money is on City paying over 50 million for him.

I don't think City will be going for him. Kompany seems to be back to himself this season and Mangala looks like he is finally settling in. They have just signed Otamendi too so they look pretty good at CB right now. I think our main competition will come from United, and if we don't make top 4 then i don't think we have any hope of getting him to be honest.

True, city are well covered at centre back. Is Demichelis still there too? Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me if City went in big for him and moved one the others on. Everyone needs some homegrown and if your going to have Englush players you might as well have the best. Either way, I don't hold much hope of him ever playing for us now.
