Following Our Nearest & Dearest Rivals, 2017/2018

The Guardian has done their usual fan season preview thing, asking a supporter of each club for predictions and the like.

Only 2 fans out of 20 predicted their own club to finish 1st: the Man City fan and... the Liverpool one. Living up to those old 'this is our year' stereotypes.

This United team still look a million miles away from the big boys. Couple of good results in pre season vs no marks  made them a bit giddy. Matic, Pogba Lukaku, and their defence looking woeful.

This is embarrassing for utd, completely outplayed. And lukaku missed an open net ha ha....£80m for f**ks sake.

Poor goalkeeping, it's the one area I think Madrid could do better in.

They should go for de gea again.

Lukaku scores, some people are going to fall asleep on wet pillows tonight

Matic has done okay, but nothing spectacular. He got the shot away that lukaku followed up after keepers save. Lukaku been fairly immobile and usual lukaku. You think utd would be less open after focusing more on protecting defence, but could have lost by more tonight. Pogba again been inconsistent and fairly invisible. However, it is real madrid so can't be too judgemental on utd for looking poor.

it's going to be one of those seasons where every time matic has a good game we'll hear how poor a decision it was by us to sell and how much he's benefitted utd, only to then have a bad game and have people telling us how smart we were to sell and his bad form was inevitable lol.

One thing felt quite familiar watching United yesterday, and that was how open their midfield was at times. Often Matic would, for some reason, have gone wandering halfway up the pitch and then given the ball away, meaning there were no United players anywhere near the middle of the pitch and Madrid charged straight at the quickly retreating backline. Pogba has no interest in dealing with defensive stuff, and Herrera certainly doesn't have any of Kante's defensive abilities so was nowhere to be seen either. I know we're no better off with Cesc and his defensive abilities in the middle at the moment, but hopefully Bakayoko can come in and give us some presence in there.

I've no doubt Matic will have good games and all the pundits will be falling over themselves at how stupid we've been (it happened a lot with the BT team last night), but there's no way a player of his level would go to a new team and be terrible in every single game. Jose's systems perhaps work more in his favour than Conte's, so my annoyance isn't necessarily with losing him, but with losing him to a team that can make some use of him. Anyway, if we sign another solid midfield backup, and Bakayoko comes good, then I'm sure we'll forget all about him.
