Joe Cole Retires

Featured Replies

Surprised there's not a thread on this already.

He's one of my favourite footballers, he may not be a Terry, Lampard or Drogba as a legend but on shear technical ability and enjoyment of watching the game he's up there for me. If there's no other reason to love the bloke Hazard has said that he is a massive reason why he joined Chelsea.

Enjoy your retirement Joe Cole thank you for playing for Chelsea and the memories.

There’s a thread in vintage Chelsea and there’s also the following our ex’s thread.

Still get goosebumps watching him mug off the entire United defence with his back to them all to score that goal.

Chelsea legend Joe Cole will return to the club in 2019 as a technical academy coach.

The 37-year-old will work across various age groups over the next six months, including our Under-18s and development squad, while continuing to study for his coaching qualifications.

A star player for the Blues between 2003 and 2010, during which time he won the Premier League on three occasions, the FA Cup twice and the League Cup, Cole announced his retirement from playing in November, indicating a desire to move into coaching.

He said: ‘Looking to the future, I want to stay involved in the game and I feel I can offer a lot as a coach. To lend my experience to help other young footballers achieve their dreams, just like I did, is a big passion of mine.’

Chelsea head of youth development Neil Bath said: ‘We are delighted Joe has agreed to return to Chelsea and coach in the Academy. It has always been our philosophy to have a number of ex-players involved in our coaching structure so they can pass on their unique experiences and what it means to play for Chelsea.

‘Joe will work across a number of age groups and with various staff to ensure he gets to experience the full range of our programme. I’m sure sharing his experiences and football knowledge, combined with his obvious passion for the game, will help enormously with the development of our young players.’

So pleased that Joe gets air time. He's a genuine a-rater, not a b-rate ex player wheeled out for certain games (Joleon Lescott, Richard Dunne, Shola Ameobi). He has decent game knowledge, stands our corner but is even and fair, unlike those scousers flooding our screens , from flagrantly biased big nose Thompson, through no-nothing Carragher, to Redknapp who can't have an opinion without getting soemone else to back it up, "hey Thierry", "isn't it Graeme".

I know everybody has a persecution complex about how theire clud is portrayed but i have always felt that any of our success has been commented on begrudgingly by Sky United.

Really pleased that Joe can give considered opinions but can still put a Chelsea friendly position forward.

2 Moments for me... Both Vs Man Utd.

The goal to put us 2-0 up at home (2006) where he wriggles round Vidic, Ferdinand and Brown then slots home. What a finish.

The goal to put us 1-0 up at OT when Malouda sauntered down the channel and he backheeled in.

Both goals that effectively gave us control of the league/sealed us the title. Loved his low centre of gravity and silkyness on the ball. Devastated when that clown from Southend gave him that awful Knee injury which I still think he never really recovered from.

Great long-form interview with Joe Cole on the High Performance podcast.

Some really interesting insights: the team getting the hairdryer from Jose Mourinho after the 2-1 loss to Barcelona, marking Ronaldinho, and the real juicy stuff - Abramovich's intervention when he requested a transfer in 2007, and how he regretting leaving Chelsea out of petulance/ego.

Can't wait to hear what he has to say about his meaningful moment with me at the Bridge!

Would be a great ending of the mystery of Valerie's tits. I assumed it would be one of those Sopranos-style 'there are no easy answers or answers at all' endings.
